ABSTRACT As a burgeoning literature on high-speed rail development indicates, good station-area planning is a very important prerequisite for the eventual successful operation of a high-speed rail station; it can also trigger opportunities for economic development in the station area and the station-city. At the same time, “on the ground” experiences from international examples of high-speed rail stations can provide valuable lessons for the California high-speed rail system in general, and the San Jose Diridon station in particular.

FEDECRAIL – PRESIDENT’S REPORT – 27.06.2017 Following the election of Jaap Nieweg to the Council at the AGM in May, it is intended that he should take over the Presidency from me at the conclusion of our Council meeting on 1st July, as I explained at the meeting in Antwerp. Therefore this will be the last President’s Report filed by me. I intend to remain on the Council until our next AGM in Scotland next April. It was during the celebration of 150 years of Nederlands Spoorwegen in 1989 that the idea of establishing a pan-European Federation of museum and tourist railways was first mooted, so it is fitting that my successor should be a Dutchman. Several years followed with meetings of a founding group set up at a conference held in Hameln in Germany in 1991. FEDECRAIL was finally established with its present constitution in1994 when the King of the Belgians signed the appropriate decree.

The challenges related to hydrogen as an energy carrier are however not only technical. Due to the nature and purpose of transport, a number of refueling points or hydrogen stations are needed for it to be attractive as a fuel. The cliché “chicken and egg”- situation is often used to describe the dilemma of implementing new fuels such as hydrogen. Without hydrogen stations where people can refuel the cars, it is not profitable to produce the few cars that will be needed. Without many customers asking for hydrogen fuel and very few customers actually using the existing stations, the operators of the station will not want to build more stations due to the economical loss it presents. Hydrogen has many years been looked upon as an alternative to conventional fuels, either because of energy security and/or environmental reasons.

  • 2021 Book News Welcome to Our 2021 Book News
2021 Book News Welcome to our 2021 Book News. As we come towards the end of a very strange year we hope that you’ve managed to get this far relatively unscathed. It’s been a very challenging time for us all and we’re just relieved that, so far, we’re mostly all in one piece. While we were closed over lockdown, Mark took on the challenge of digitalising some of Venture’s back catalogue producing over 20 downloadable books of some of our most popular titles. Thanks to the kind donations of our customers we managed to raise over £3000 for The Christie which was then matched pound for pound by a very good friend taking the total to almost £7000. There is still time to donate and download these books, just click on the downloads page on our website for the full list. We’re still operating with reduced numbers in the building at any one time. We’ve re-organised our schedules for packers and office staff to enable us to get orders out as fast as we can, but we’re also relying on carriers and suppliers. Many of the publishers whose titles we stock are small societies or one-man operations so please be aware of the longer lead times when placing orders for Christmas presents. The last posting dates for Christmas are listed on page 63 along with all the updates in light of the current Covid situation and also the impending Brexit deadline. In particular, please note the change to our order and payment processing which was introduced on 1st July 2020.

Special service for english speaking readers: Translation of the most important legends: Prefaces page 5: OOK (left), first president of FREMO and three of his successors: Axel Hartig, Henk Lindner and Torsten Geissler, photographed during the FREMO annual convention 2004 in Braunlage. p. 6 (newspaper man cartoon): „Train-operation you say? Never heard that. You‘ll have to explain me that later. But first things first: How big is your baseboard?“ p. 7: Such signs in the form of a stylized fir tree are called Dennert-Trees and are found throughout the Harz mountains to mark and explain places of historic and cultural interest. The presumably only one outside the Harz is installed in the stairway that leads down to the BAE layout. Chapter 1: Influences and stamps page 8-1: Tilsit, the author‘s birthplace, had two single track tramwaylines. While he does not recall this crossing of lines he does remember the single tramcars passing in front of the house. p.8-2: The metre gauge eletric railway which ran across the Memel river had its terminal in front of his grandfather‘s house where the little electric motor cars had to run around their train. While he does not recall this procedure it must have burned itself into his mind and stamped him. p. 9-1: The author‘s model railway career began in 1952 at age 12 with the MÄRKLIN TM 800 which was a somewhat rough replica of a class 80 0-6-0T. p. 9-2: The colourful little MÄRKLIN cattle wagon was the author‘s first model railway purchase.
