Course Description. The purpose of PHED 1071 – Fitness Walking is to teach students the fundamentals and proper techniques of walking for exercise. In addition, it will help students achieve some level of physical fitness that is fun as well as recreational. Finally, the students will develop a thorough knowledge of the importance of exercise.

Course Learning Outcomes: • How to develop, implement and coordinate a walking program. • Understand the benefits, safety, and motivation of walking. • Analyze and demonstrate the various skills and techniques of walking. • Appreciate the role of walking as a corner stone for a healthy lifestyle. • Have Fun!

The college assesses student learning based on the achievement of 7 general education outcomes. The outcomes for Exercise and Health Science courses are listed on all syllabi. For all activity classes (PHED) the outcome is number 7. For all professional and health (HLTH) courses the outcomes are 1, 2, and 7. The appropriate learning outcome for this course is indicated below.

7. Students will take responsibility for their health and physical activity.

Textbook. Walk Your Way to Fitness Mayo Clinic (Mayo Clinic Publisher; for a copy of the text call: 1-800-291-1128 and ask for Item No. 622662 or www.mayoclinic.com.) (required) Bring your book to class.

Evaluation and Grading. You will be graded in five(5) areas: your participation in class, your skill , and a written exam. Your grade will be determined by these points:

Participation 95 points Written Log* 100 points Walking test* 80 to 100 points Outside walking 100 points (must be completed) Written exam 100 points 475 total points

A = 438-475 points D = 348-374 points B = 405-437 points F = less than 348 points C = 375-404 points

*See Written Log/Journal as well as Walking Test for more details.

Attendance Policy. You are expected to attend every session. If you attend every session (cannot miss class for any reason), you will be awarded with 5 extra points on your participation grade at the end of the term. If you miss classes, the following policy will be used to determine your grade:

If you miss 2 classes – there will be no penalties (95 pts) If you miss 3/4 classes – your participation grade drops 5 pts 3rd miss/10 pts 4th miss After you miss 4 classes – you will “FAIL” this course. If you are late for class – 3 times equals 1 missed class or 15 minutes late and you are absent

You are responsible for letting me know if you are late for class. If you are 15 minutes late, don’t come. If you think you have been marked absent, you have two days from the day you believe you were counted absent to resolve this issue. I am not responsible for marking you present when you are late for class. Actually, you are responsible for being in class on time and ready to walk. You are responsible for keeping up with your attendance. D2L is not always up-to-date. Attendance will be taken twice – before and after class. To be counted present you must answer twice. There are no EXCUSED ABSENCES. Understand that 3 tardies (late) will equal 1 absent. After you have missed 4 classes I will e-mail you to let you know that you have an “F” in the course. Participation grade will drop to “0”. At this point, there is no way to make-up missed assignments.

*Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines hygiene as “the things that you do to keep yourself and your surroundings clean in order to maintain good health”. In this class, personal hygiene is expected!! Do not put me in a position to require it! Do not put me in a position to discuss personal hygiene with you! You should have learned about personal hygiene in the 6th grade – bathing, deodorant, etc. If you fail to maintain good hygiene, I will personally discuss this with you. If I have to discuss this with you again, I will dismiss you from class and count you absent. You will not be allowed in class until you clean up!

Please be aware that nature is everywhere and you never know when a fox, deer, owl or other species will be found on or near the trails. Please DO NOT disturb their habitats or attempt to catch one, pick one off the ground or antagonize any creature – they will defend themselves if they feel threatened. Leave them alone, watch them, and continue your walk or jog.
