Several principal investigators contributed to this brochure with reports of their projects. Many thanks go to these individuals and to all the principal investigators and Ph.D. students who have been part of the program. Their achievements and the personal contacts with their project partners have shaped the structure of our cooperation program. This anniversary brochure also gives a brief look at the history of the cooperation program. All the projects, including ongoing work, are listed in the appendix. The present brochure represents a follow up to our brochure Cancer Research and Cooperation, which was compiled in 1999, Professor Dr. Dr. Nurit Topaz Dr. Shlomo Sarig and summarizes the history and the development of our program. These documents are available on our homepage (www.dkfz.de/israel). 30 Years' German-Israeli Cooperation in Cancer Research The coordinators would like to thank the BMBF for funding and the management board of the German Cancer Research Center for their support. A 30-year anniversary is something to be proud of and offers the opportunity to look back to the beginnings of the German-Israeli cooperation, which started in 1976 initially with three projects. The following phases showed an increase to Heidelberg/Jerusalem, March 2006 10 projects. Since receiving supplemental financing in 1992, a constant number of Prof. Dr. Dr. Wolfhard Semmler Dr. Shlomo Sarig Nurit Topaz 14 projects have been ongoing. As of June 2005, a total of 105 projects had been successfully concluded. The cooperation program has developed very satisfactorily in the course of the past 30 years, as certified by the international review commission in 1997. Outstanding achievements have been made in day-to-day work at the bench and in joint publications: Every year the project partners have reported on the progress of the respective subprojects at the annual meeting of the program committee so as to expand and intensify the cooperation. Advances in medical science and medical practice throughout the twentieth century, and especially after the Second World War, have proceeded at such a pace, and with such an intensity, that they provide new and genuine challenges to historians. Scientists and clinicians themselves frequently bemoan the rate at which published material proliferates in their disciplines, and the near impossibility of ‘keeping up with the literature’. Pity, then, the poor historian, trying to make sense of this mass of published data, scouring archives for unpublished accounts and illuminating details, and attempting throughout to comprehend, contextualize, reconstruct and convey to others the stories of the recent past and their significance. The extensive published record of modern medicine and medical science raises particular problems for historians: it is often presented in a piecemeal but formal fashion, sometimes seemingly designed to conceal rather than reveal the processes by which scientific medicine is conducted.

After all, immunotherapy has been the focus of keen scientific interest here at the Weizmann Institute for years, with some of the world’s most important immunotherapy-related discoveries emerging from our labs, both historically and right up to the present day. In fact, it was our recognition of the dynamism of the field that inspired us to choose the topic of this magazine’s cover story: an overview of the Weizmann Institute’s contribution to both immunology research and breakthroughs in immunotherapy for cancer. When Prof. Zelig Eshhar of the Institute’s Department of Immunology began exploring how genetic modification of immune cells could cause such cells to seek out and destroy cancer back in the 1980s, he was in the company of just a few other scientists worldwide convinced of cancer immunotherapy’s potential. Today this hoped-for potential is “settled science” and Prof. Eshhar’s T-cell research, which is now the basis for a successful drug therapy for leukemia, is just the latest success from our renowned scientists working in immunotherapy- related topics—a group that includes Prof. Michael Sela, Prof. Ruth Arnon, and others. In setting out on his path of research, he understands that he must tread not only with the impartiality required by the objectivity of his method but also with the intellectual honesty, the responsibility, and I would say with a kind of “reverence”, which befit the human spirit in its drawing near to truth. For the scientist, to understand in an ever better way the particular reality of man in relation to the biological-physical processes of nature, to discover always new aspects of the cosmos, to know more about the location and the distri- bution of resources, the social and environmental dynamics, and the logic of progress and development, becomes translated into a duty to serve more fully the whole of mankind, to which he belongs. For this reason, the ethical and moral responsibilities connected to scientific research can be perceived as a requirement within science, because it is a fully human activity, but not as control, or worse, as an imposition which comes from outside. The man of science knows perfectly, from the point of view of his knowledge, that truth cannot be subject to negotiation, cannot be obscured or abandoned to free conventions or agreements between groups of power, societies, or States.
