    Tisha B’Av through Josephus’s Eyes Rabbi Melanie Aron August 9, 2019 When something goes terribly wrong, it is likely that someone will ask why. Figuring out how things went south is important in order to prevent similar disasters in the future. So, when the Romans destroyed the Temple in the year 70 CE and brought an end to Jewish independence, we can imagine inquiries into what caused this tragedy. The answers found in the Talmud blame the destruction of the Temple on the baseless hatred said to have existed at that time and are the most frequently shared explanations. These answers even tell a story of an invitation delivered to the wrong person, resulting in an unwanted guest being embarrassingly evicted from a gathering. According to the rabbis, the revenge of the shunned guest is what sets in motion the process that ultimately leads to the Roman destruction of the Temple. One concern you might have with this explanation is that it is found in a text written 300–500 years after the churban, or the burning, occurred. Skeptics say this explanation may reflect more about concerns in the later era than about the true history of the original time period. But what if we had records from someone who lived at the time? Perhaps even from someone who was there at the gates of Jerusalem as the Roman army advanced? Well actually, we do have these records. They are the histories written by one Yosef ben Matityahu, later called Flavius Josephus. He was originally a general in the Judean army in the Galilee, but after being captured, he defected and became an aide-de-camp to the Romans and, eventually, an important historian.

Most of the country is in a semi-arid zone, with distinct short winter (wet) and long summer (dry) seasons, and a low annual rainfall of around 500 mm (an overall multi-annual average). The country can be divided into two climatic regions: (1) the southern arid/semi-arid areas have very low annual precipitation (<100 mm) and consist of the Negev Desert and the Arava Valley; this arid zone extends also to the Jordan Valley where annual rainfall is below 300 mm; (2) the central-north of the country that has a temperate, Mediterranean climate and a relatively high annual rainfall (>600 mm). Israel has suffered from a chronic water shortage for years. In recent years, however, the situation has developed into a severe crisis; since 1998, the country has suffered from drought, and the annual rainfall was short of the multi-annual average in most of the years.

    Vol. 17, No. 1 International Journal of Multicultural Education 2015 Leadership for Equity and Social Justice in Arab And Jewish Schools in Israel: Leadership Trajectories and Pedagogical Praxis Khalid Husny Arar The Center for Academic Studies & Sakhnin College Israel ABSTRACT: The research investigated how principals in Israel’s Jewish and Arab school systems perceive and practice their role in promoting equitable education to bridge socio-economic and pedagogic gaps. It asked how Jewish and Arab principals understand the concept of social justice and what they do in order to promote social justice reality in their schools. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 Arab and Jewish principals. Analysis of interviews indicated that Israeli education policy perpetuates ethnic and social gaps. The principals reported different personal trajectories that shaped their perceptions of social and described strategies used to promote social justice. Yet, in the main, this aspiration remains largely rhetorical, often failing to inform school practice (Blankstein & Houston, 2011; North, 2008). The implementation of SJ policy and practice to correct injustice, discrimination, and exclusion remains elusive, politically loaded, and subject to numerous interpretations (Jean-Marie, Normore, & Brooks, 2009).
