On the research front they are essential probes for determining the pathological pathway and cause of diseases like cancer and autoimmune and neurological disorders. They are also used for typing blood and tissue, a process that is vital to blood transfusion and organ transplants. In addition, monoclonal antibodies are critical components in diagnostics, having increased the speed and accuracy of tests. Today the antibodies are used for the detection of multiple conditions, ranging from pregnancy and heart attacks, to pandemic flu, AIDS and diseases like anthrax and smallpox released by biological weapons. -

Land Smith 2021 MELS ii Abstract Sina Queyras, in the essay “Lyric Conceptualism: A Manifesto in Progress,” describes the Lyric Conceptualist as a poet capable of recognizing the effects of disparate movements and employing a variety of lyric, conceptual, and language poetry techniques to continue to innovate in poetry without dismissing the work of other schools of poetic thought. Queyras sees the lyric conceptualist as an artistic curator who collects, modifies, selects, synthesizes, and adapts, to create verse that is both conceptual and accessible, using relevant materials and techniques from the past and present. This dissertation responds to Queyras’s idea with a collection of original poems in the lyric conceptualist mode, supported by a critical exegesis of that work. -

Eulogy Professor Emeritus Brigitte A. Askonas You have doubtless often heard it said that such a person needs no introduction. Well, I reckon the recipient of the 2007 Robert Koch Gold Medal deserves an introduction. I would like to introduce her, as she is not someone to blow her own trumpet. She would never describe herself as the grand dame of cellular immunology. She would never talk about the great influence she has had on immunology. She would never say that she has mentored countless outstanding scientists. She would never proudly list all her honorary memberships of scientific societies and academies and all her honorary professorships at top universities. Professor Brigitte Askonas is not very forthcoming about her successes, which is precisely why an introduction is necessary. We would like her to know how much we value her contributions to science and how impressed we are by the formative influence she has had on the biosciences in Europe and in particular on immunology. Ita Askonas started her scientific career as a biochemist. In 1944, she was awarded a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. In 1952, she received her PhD from the Biochemistry Department of the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, where she served her scientific apprenticeship under Malcolm Dixon. She studied muscle enzymes, by no means the worst grounding for her subsequent research. After completing her doctorate, she became a member of the Scientific Staff at the National Institute of Medical Research in Mill Hill, London. There, she first continued with her enzyme studies and biochemical research. -

Advances in medical science and medical practice throughout the twentieth century, and especially after the Second World War, have proceeded at such a pace, and with such an intensity, that they provide new and genuine challenges to historians. Scientists and clinicians themselves frequently bemoan the rate at which published material proliferates in their disciplines, and the near impossibility of ‘keeping up with the literature’. Pity, then, the poor historian, trying to make sense of this mass of published data, scouring archives for unpublished accounts and illuminating details, and attempting throughout to comprehend, contextualize, reconstruct and convey to others the stories of the recent past and their significance. The extensive published record of modern medicine and medical science raises particular problems for historians: it is often presented in a piecemeal but formal fashion, sometimes seemingly designed to conceal rather than reveal the processes by which scientific medicine is conducted. -

Photo Courtesy Marian Kosshland Science Museum MARIAN ELLIOTT KOSHLAND October 25, 1921–October 28, 1997 BY RUTH LEVY GUYER ARIAN ELLIOTT KOSHLAND WAS AN eminent immunologist. MShe was spirited, practical, insightful, and inventive, and she had tremendous integrity, energy, and smarts. She was also a caring and generous person. I was fortunate to be one of her graduate students at the University of California at Berkeley in the early 1970s. Marian had become a professor in the bacteriology and immunology department at Berkeley shortly before I joined her group. Her laboratory was in the old Life Sciences Build- ing near the (in)famous eucalyptus grove, a campus landmark redolent of medicinal oils and site of commonplace conversa- tions, licit and illicit trysts, and spurned lovers’ fist fights. Marian’s laboratory was large and classic: Rows of tall, stately black benches spanned much of the width of the room, and at the back near the windows that looked out onto the building’s courtyard was a hulking rectangular conference table. That table was where we—the four graduate students, the postdoc from Lausanne, the two technicians, and Mar- ian—gathered every day at lunchtime to eat and to talk about J chain—the joining protein of immunoglobulin molecules that Marian & Co. -
