Ethics and World-view in Identity-based Conflict in Nigeria A Practical Theological Perspective on The Religious Dimension of Violence in Plateau State Bruce Kirkwood Campbell PhD Practical Theology The University of Edinburgh January 2015 Abstract Severe intercommunal violence has repeatedly rocked Plateau State in the first decade of the new millennium, killing thousands of people. Observers have attributed the ªcrisisº to political, economic and social forces which breed pockets of exclusion and resentment. One notable model explains the violence through a paradigm of privileged ªindigenesº who seek to prevent ªsettlersº from the political rights which would give them the access to the resources managed by the state and the economic opportunities that this entails. While not taking issue with the diagnosed causes of conflict, the Researcher argues that there is a substantial body of evidence being ignored which points to conflict cleavage having opened up along the divide of Christian-Muslim religious identity in a way that the settler-identity model does not sufficiently explain. -

ETHNO-RELIGIOUS CONFLICT AND SETTLEMENT DYNAMICS IN PLATEAU STATE, NIGERIA, 1994-2012 BY ONYEKACHI ERNEST NNABUIHE B.A. (Imo), M.A. (Ibadan) A Thesis in PEACE and CONFLICT STUDIES Submitted to the Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies, in partial fulfilment for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY of the UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN SEPTEMBER 2016 UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN LIBRARY i ABSTRACT Persistent communal conflicts in Plateau State underscore the differences between ethno-religious identities and aggravated segregation in human settlements. Existing studies on ethno-religious conflict have focused on colonial segregated settlement policy otherwise known as the Sabon Gari. These studies have neglected settlement dynamics as both cause and effect of ethno-religious conflicts. This study, therefore, interrogated the complex interaction between ethno-religious conflict and settlement dynamics in Plateau State. This is with a view to showing how conflicts structure and restructure settlements and their implications for inter-group relations, group mobilisation and infrastructural development. The study adopted Lawler‘s Relational theory and case study research design. Respondents were purposively selected from four Local Government Areas comprising Jos North, Jos South, Barkin- Ladi and Riyom. Primary data were collected through 46 in-depth interviews from twelve neighbourhood leaders, eleven ethno-religious group leaders, three members of civil society organisations, four estate managers, two security officials, two academics and twelve youth leaders. A total of six Focus Group Discussions were held: one each with Afizere, Anaguta and Hausa ethnic groups in Jos North, Berom in Jos South, Igbo in Barkin-Ladi and Fulani in Riyom. Non-participant observation method was also employed. -

Information Kit for 2015 General Elections
INFORMATION KIT FOR 2015 GENERAL ELECTIONS 1 FOREWARD The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has come a long way since 2011 in making the Nigerian electoral process transparent, as a way of ensuring that elections are free, fair and credible and that they measure up to global best standards of democratic elections. We have done this not only by reforms that have been in the electoral procedures, but also in the way informationon the process is made available for public use and awareness. Even though the yearnings of many Nigerians for a perfect electoral process may not have been fulfilled yet, our reforms since 2011 has ensured incremental improvement in the quality and credibility of elections that have been conducted. Beginning with some of the Governorship elections conducted by INEC since 2013, the Commission began to articulate Information Kits for the enlightenment of the public, especially election observers and journalists who may need some background information in order to follow and adequately undertstand the electoral process. With the 2015 General Elections scheduled to take place nationwide, this document is unique, in that it brings together electoral information about all the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). I am optimistic that this kit will contribute to the body of knowledge about the Nigerian electoral system and enhance the transparency of the 2015 elections.
