We are thrilled to announce that we have recently received the Mayor’s Award for Access, which is in recognition of our positive contribution to improving access and opportunities for the people and Borough of Guildford. We also had our very first Family Festival during the October half term, which was part of a nationwide initiative. It was lovely to see so many familiar and new faces. If it was your first visit to the Theatre then we hope that you had fun. We have another festival coming up in February. Have a look at page 8 to find out more. Highlights this Dpring include our Indie Film Festival in January (p4), comedian Lee Hurst with his new stand up show (rescheduled from November last year, p5), Guildford Spring Music Festival (p12, 13), The Jungle Book, performed by our resident youth theatre The Man In The Moon (p14), and a special family Easter treat - Jack and the Beanstalk performed by the acclaimed Lyngo Theatre (p15). Our season is also packed full of musicals and plays performed by fantastic local performance groups which include The Music Works, Godalming College, Surrey Mozart Players, Guildford School of Acting, the Performance Preparation Academy, The Pranksters Theatre Company, George Abbot School, Guildford Opera, Lost for Words and Guildburys Theatre Company. We hope to see you at the Theatre soon! The Electric Theatre Team GATA is an umbrella organisation of about 20 societies and groups including theatre and opera companies, singing and youth groups, as well as dancers and film makers. The Association works towards advancing public education in the dramatic arts in and around Guildford. It has been a major ally of The Electric Theatre, having been instrumental in its founding. Many of the groups perform at The Electric Theatre year in, year out – why not drop in and see what they’re up to, and maybe join in too? Keep an eye out for auditions, or other ways of getting involved behind the scenes. Proceeds go towards purchasing amenities for the Theatre. Mostly people get on with living their lives, but everyone has at least one thing that pushes their button and sends them over the edge. What's yours? Come along for a night of laughter and letting off some steam. Lee is known throughout the comedy business as someone who can pull laughs out of thin air with his razor sharp ability to improvise and ad lib comedy on the spot. Everyone witnessed this when he first hit our TV screens on Have I Got News For You and They Think It's All Over. The Music Works presents "Let's Make Music!". As a local music school based in Milford Surrey, they are excited to be staging their latest concert. This is then to be submitted to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs by July 2001, under the provisions of Part IIA of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. The priorities for dealing with contaminated land are aimed primarily at protecting human and animal health, controlled waters and ecosystems. In addition to these, prevention of damage to property and further contamination are included along with encouragement to voluntarily remediate brownfield sites. A five-year programme of inspection was commenced in April 2001 to run until April 2006. It is in 6 stages and based on a category system. Priority is given to land in areas of population and controlled waters and the final category being in undeveloped areas including the Green Belt. Sites that require urgent attention, whether through complaint or new information coming to light, will be dealt with immediately under procedures outlined in this strategy. Before land can be formally designated as contaminated it has to meet certain criteria, however once this has been attained, the information will be kept on a public register to be accessible during office hours. Guildford Borough Council will work in partnership with all other organisations and consultees specified within the guidance notes on this document and at every stage of the inspection process.

Earlier this year, immediately before the local elections, Guildford Borough Council adopted a new Local Plan, setting out its aspirations for housing, development and other areas of local government. This plan included a proposal to build 1,800 homes on the Blackwell Farm site, much of which lies within Compton Parish and all of which is within the Metropolitan Green Belt. Compton Parish Council, after consulting through public meetings, resolved to challenge this Plan, the basis for the housing numbers, the way the inspector conducted the hearings and the manner in which it was adopted by GBC. Our advice was that the dwelling numbers (at 37% above the Council's own objective assessment of housing need) could not be justified, and the extra road traffic generated would be enormously harmful to Compton village. Our challenge, together with the challenges from two other parties, will be heard at the Law Courts in the Strand, London on Tuesday 5th, Wednesday 6th & Thursday 7th November, as a Section 113 Challenge. The hearing will be open to the public from 10.30am to 4.30pm. You are very welcome to attend and support our legal team. Mobile phones are permitted in the courtroom but you are warned that if they go off, you are liable to be in Contempt of Court so it is important to keep all devices on silent! BE ALERT!     Honorary Freemen of the Borough of Guildford Introduction In past centuries, admission to the Freedom of a Borough conferred upon the recipient possession of recognisable privileges. In order to carry out certain trades or professions in a particular Borough, one had to be enrolled as a freeman and admission to the freedom was frequently necessary in order to have a vote in parliamentary elections. To become a freeman of Guildford, one had to be: (a) apprenticed to a freeman of the Borough for at least seven years, or (b) the eldest son of a freeman, or (c) by admission into the “Corporation”. Records kept in the Guildford Muniment Room contain the names of 1,061 persons admitted to the freedom of the Borough between 1655 and 1933 and also record the production of indentures of apprenticeship between 1655 and 1903. The theatre is owned and directly operated by Guildford Borough Council. The conversion of the building to the Electric Theatre was due to successful lobbying from the Guildford Amateur Theatre Association (GATA) who also provided technical equipment. A legal agreement gives GATA priority booking rights and concessionary hire rates. The Council has been considering the role the theatre plays in contributing to the overall performing arts provision in Guildford. It is important to the Council that any decisions on the future of the Electric Theatre are taken in the context of the other performing arts venues and affordability in light of competing priorities for the Council’s declining revenue budget. A stakeholder workshop was held at the Electric Theatre in March 2014 with an aim to understand the cultural offer, purpose and future of the theatre.
