Email: [email protected] PARISH COUNCIL COMPTON PARISH COUNCIL IN THE HIGH COURT. Earlier this year, immediately before the local elections, Guildford Borough Council adopted a new Local Plan, setting out its aspirations for housing, development and other areas of local government. This plan included a proposal to build 1,800 homes on the Blackwell Farm site, much of which lies within Compton Parish and all of which is within the Metropolitan Green Belt. Compton Parish Council, after consulting through public meetings, resolved to challenge this Plan, the basis for the housing numbers, the way the inspector conducted the hearings and the manner in which it was adopted by GBC. Our advice was that the dwelling numbers (at 37% above the Council's own objective assessment of housing need) could not be justified, and the extra road traffic generated would be enormously harmful to Compton village. Our challenge, together with the challenges from two other parties, will be heard at the Law Courts in the Strand, London on Tuesday 5th, Wednesday 6th & Thursday 7th November, as a Section 113 Challenge. The hearing will be open to the public from 10.30am to 4.30pm. You are very welcome to attend and support our legal team. Mobile phones are permitted in the courtroom but you are warned that if they go off, you are liable to be in Contempt of Court so it is important to keep all devices on silent! BE ALERT! Following a recent burglary near Spiceall, it has become apparent that the perpetrators were watching the property from a car parked close by for some time before they broke in.

The house offers the very well proportioned rooms expected from a property of this era, with features including high ceilings, large windows and open fires. The accommodation is laid out over three floors and includes 4 reception rooms, 5 bedrooms and 3 bath/shower rooms. The theatre is owned and directly operated by Guildford Borough Council. The conversion of the building to the Electric Theatre was due to successful lobbying from the Guildford Amateur Theatre Association (GATA) who also provided technical equipment. A legal agreement gives GATA priority booking rights and concessionary hire rates. The Council has been considering the role the theatre plays in contributing to the overall performing arts provision in Guildford. It is important to the Council that any decisions on the future of the Electric Theatre are taken in the context of the other performing arts venues and affordability in light of competing priorities for the Council’s declining revenue budget. A stakeholder workshop was held at the Electric Theatre in March 2014 with an aim to understand the cultural offer, purpose and future of the theatre.

Strategy for the Historic Industrial Environment The Brewing Industry A report by the Brewery History Society for English Heritage February 2010 Text by Lynn Pearson Brewery History Society, 102 Ayelands, New Ash Green, Longfield, Kent DA3 8JW www.breweryhistory.com Foreword The Brewery History Society (BHS) was founded in 1972 to promote research into all aspects of the brewing industry, to encourage the interchange of information about breweries and brewing, and to collect photographic and other archive information about brewery history. The Society publishes a Newsletter and a quarterly journal Brewery History, which first appeared in 1972. It has also published a national directory and a series of county-wide surveys of historic breweries; the Society’s archive is held by Birmingham Central Library. Further details of BHS activities may be found at <http://www.breweryhistory.com>. The ongoing threat to the historic fabric of the English brewing industry was discussed at the conference From Grain to Glass, organised jointly by English Heritage (EH), the BHS and the Association for Industrial Archaeology (AIA), which took place at Swindon on 13 June 2003; the joint BHS and Victorian Society study day From Hop to Hostelry: the brewing and licensed trades 1837 -1914 (Young’s Ram Brewery, Wandsworth, 25 February 2006); and during the AIA Ironbridge Working Weekend (Coalbrookdale, 29 April 2006).
