2 WELCOME

In times of uncertainty, music gives us solace, hope and joy.

The world now views Western Australia as a utopia, a place where people elbow bump but wander freely and sanitise regularly while enjoying the thrill of live music making. In 2021 WASO celebrates some of the best talent from across Australia in a program of powerful masterworks and classical favourites. We also shine a bright spotlight on our wonderfully talented WASO musicians, with nine featured as soloists throughout the year. We are privileged to present to you a complete program for 2021, and acknowledge that things may need to change at any time. If we do need to make changes to this program, we will be sure to let you know. Either way, we’ll be on this musical journey together. I cannot wait to once again make music with our magnificent Orchestra for you.

34 SECURING A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR MUSIC IN WA OUR STORY

Western Australia is a hotbed of incredible talent, and this is on show in WASO’s 2021 Season like never before. This beacon of our creative state must continue to shine brightly for the world to see so we are playing our part to ensure the music plays on for generations to come. Here is a small selection of the many people and stories that will bring our year to life.

Every great city has a vibrant arts culture with music at its heart. Here at WASO, we are always striving for new ways to develop local talent for an even brighter future for West Australian music. In 2021 the Western Australian Youth Orchestra (WAYO) and WASO join forces in a three-year partnership, supported by Woodside. The partnership will provide a foundation of unique training opportunities for the professional development of WAYO’s young musicians. Each year, these workshops will culminate in a side-by-side performance with both orchestras on stage at Perth Concert Hall. With Woodside’s support, these talented young musicians will be provided with rare access to WASO, strengthening the pathway for them to become the professional musicians of the future and much more!

WASO and WAYO perform new works from local Noongar musicians alongside Stravinsky’s much loved Firebird in Dreams of Place, supported by Woodside, at Perth Concert Hall on 5 & 7 February as part of Perth Festival. This event can be added to any subscription. See page 53 for booking details.

2021 CONCERT SERIES PROGRAM CHANGES You may have noticed some changes have been made to the way our Concert Series programs are structured when compared with previous years. This is due to COVID-19. Our 2021 Season is planned to be delivered in Phase 5 or 6 of the Western Australian Government’s easing of COVID-19 restrictions. That means we are planning to present our events with no physical distancing required. We may need to change this setting closer to the date of the performance and should this be required, our new program structure allows more flexibility to do so. We hope that you continue to be inspired by the music and will see as much as you can. We also would value your feedback on the program through post-concert surveys or by contacting the box office.

We will do everything in our power to present the events and activities within this brochure, but things may happen that are beyond our control, such as Government or travel restrictions. In these instances we will have to vary the program sometimes without notice and we ask for your understanding if this occurs. We are doing our best and will share any changes with you as soon as we can.
