As a not-for-prot organisation, we work very closely with all levels of government and 2019 Annual Report Annual 2019 I faithfully thank the Australia Council for the Arts, the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria, and the City of Melbourne for their unwavering support of our Orchestra over the past year. I warmly thank all my fellow Board members for their insightful and strategic contributions and welcome Andrew Dudgeon AM who joined us as a Director this year. The Board is composed of people who are very passionate about the MSO and orchestral music and it is an honour and pleasure to work with them in this capacity. This major tour was a resounding success and demonstrated the important role the MSO, as a leading Australian arts organisation, has in providing platforms for mutual understanding, friendship and sharing the joy of orchestral music. At home, the MSO continued to deliver outstanding music learning opportunities. Reaching yet another milestone, in 2019 the MSO celebrated 10 years of The Pizzicato Eect, our El Sistema-inspired program for young people in the City of Hume. We also relaunched our online learning platform, MSO Learn, and staged two relaxed performances for audience members who experience sensory sensitivities. In order to undertake all of this extraordinary activity, the MSO collaborates with a multitude of people and organisations who share our vision. For this I thank each and every donor, corporate partner, and philanthropic foundation for their support and trust in the MSO. I would particularly like to mention our Principal Partner, Emirates, and our Chairman’s Circle donors, Managing Director’s Report of Melbourne presented the world symphonic premiere of Deborah Cheetham’s Eumeralla, a war requiem for peace. Our regional touring 2019 Annual Report Annual 2019 program included more than 50 events including performances, workshops, school programs. In 2019, we travelled to Indonesia, Singapore and to the United States in October for our major international tour. Returning to the USA for the rst time in almost 50 years, the MSO played to standing ovations at Symphony Center, Chicago; the John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, D.C, Mechanics Hall, Worcester, MA; and Carnegie Hall, New York City.   • Project Tosca Overview
    PROJECT TOSCA OVERVIEW Project Tosca is a large, ambitious project in which Opera Queensland will work with seven Queensland communities to find and train local performers for a 2020 tour of Tosca. Tosca is an opera by Giacomo Puccini, which premiered 120 years ago in Rome. The story follows the powerful Tosca, a famous opera singer who is devoted to the painter Cavaradossi but Scarpia, the tyrannical Chief of Police, has his own plans for her. What ensues is a gripping tale of lust, betrayal and cold-blooded murder that careens at breakneck pace. The production is set in 1970 Italy and takes a step back into a world of iconic style and lush glamour at a time of dramatic political and social change. Opera Queensland stars Antoinette Halloran, Rosario La Spina and José Carbó shine alongside the Company’s Principal Artists, Community Chorus and Queensland Symphony Orchestra Ensemble, conducted by Dane Lam. Aspiring performers from seven communities – Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Toowoomba and Gold Coast – will have the opportunity to audition for a coveted spot. During Project Tosca, around 400 successful applicants will participate in a program of free professional training in singing, stagecraft and Italian language skills before taking to the stage in their local theatres alongside Queensland’s best singers and with the support of an ensemble of musicians from the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Auditions to find 40 adult and 16 children chorus members in each community will occur throughout March, April and May 2020, with Tosca regional tour commencing on Saturday 8 August in Cairns and closing at the Gold Coast on Saturday 29 August.

Many opted to start new lives over the border in Victoria.

Seven singers and one repetiteur graduated from the Master of Music (Opera Performance) program – delivered in collaboration with Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, The University of Melbourne. Victorian Opera stages an international collaboration – a co-production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street with New Zealand Opera.
