The Targa High Country motoring event is based at Mt Buller and this year it took place from 8th- 10th November. In summer the road to the summit masquerades as one of the most exciting hill climbs in the country, and provides the gateway to each stage of the Targa three day competition. Except that this year it snowed! Serious issues for racing cars with slick tyres so the organisers were forced to shift the start to down the mountain.

The day after Targa finished we drove our Morgan to Mt Buller. Whilst enjoy- ing coffee and cake at Mansfield, we were bailed up by an old chap whose father had driven 3 wheelers for the Morgan factory before the Second World War. He remembered watching the Morgans at Brooklands and was very excited to see our 4/4 parked outside the coffee shop.

Although the day was overcast we drove with the top down but stopped to put our coats on before starting the 16km hill climb up to 1800 metres. With the road to ourselves, Brian used the full width except on blind corners - until we met a gravel truck which we crawled behind until he could let us past on a wide corner. It was the first time we had taken the Morgan up the “hill” and it handled very well, even on the switchback corners. Kerry Garrett Editor President’s Report

West Brighton Club Brunch

Our 52nd birthday was celebrated with brunch at the West Brighton Club, Brighton on 13th October 2019.

We drove down from Violet Town the day before and parked in the backyard of our Brunswick East terrace house much to the delight of the neighbour, his two sons and their dog who raced out to gaze at the car. (The dog was more interest- ed in finding where our cats were hiding.)

Sunday was cool but clear so we were rugged up but the tops were down. 63 people attended with about 28 Morgans, sporting a vari- ety of colours, arranged around the lawn area. Quite a few faces that we hadn’t seen for sometime along with some new members.

The Club premises is presently undergoing renovations, with a library, extension to the women’s facilities, and storage rooms being added. This did not seem to impact on the service from the staff, but of course we could not see behind the scenes.

We gathered at 10am for an 11am start and several people said that they thought the time was more managable contending with Sun- day traffic than meeting later. We enjoyed a delicious brunch served smorgasbord style which managed to cater for all dietry requirements very well. Some members enjoyed seconds as there was plenty of food, then after they had eaten, whilst waiting for tea and coffee to be served, everyone moved around the tables to chat with friends. West Brighton Club Brunch

President Bill spoke briefly, thank- ing everyone for attending, then he introduced VICMOG member, Jim Pfeiffer, who is a also a member of the West Brighton Club.

Jim spoke on the development of the West Brighton Club which started in 1881. He allied the Club’s social structure to the present day men’s shed. Sir Robert Menzies was a longtime member. One of the rules was no politics or religious discussion during dinner. They still meet every Friday night for three and a half hours, have a meal, sing songs and write paradies about people, or anything really. Jim sang an amusing ditty for us about Mor- gans that he had written.

Several curios had been moved into safe keeping during the renovation, one being a shrunken skull. Its label read “Sepik River over modelled skull from Papua New Guinea circa 19th - early twentieth century.” It had been placed behind the bar, so we had to take it in turns to view it. As you can see it is tiny. (I have left the bottle of Cointreau in the pic to give a scale.)

Gradually everyone started to make a move and the Morgans roared into life again heading home after a very pleasant morning. Thank you to the organisers. It sounds as though it may become a regular event.

In a rather unusual announcement, the Morgan Motor Company has advised that orders for Classic models has been suspended for the first half of 2020! Apparently, this is due to the unprecedented demand for the fabulous new Morgan Plus Six. From an Australian perspective, this means that we can take orders for Classic models, but for production in the third quarter of 2020. A few limited Production Slots may be available in the Second Quarter, but this is not present- ly confirmed. Specifically, this suspension of Classic model production presently refers to orders received for Plus 4 and Roadster models, as 4/4 production ceased some time ago. However, orders can still be taken for Morgan 3 Wheeler produc- tion, which is built in a separate section of the factory.

Importantly, the Morgan factory has now confirmed that the new Plus Six will be homologated for sale in Australia. The Australian Design Rule (ADR) process has been started and we expect to be able to take orders in the Second Quarter of 2020. Pricing cannot be confirmed at this stage, in particular due to the timing, currency uncertainties due to Brexit and unspecified ADR homologation costs. Present indications are that the base retail price, before Options and On-road costs, will be over $220 000. Morgan Cars Australia Zagame Autosport, 116 Cremorne Street. Cremorne, Victoria, 3121 Molly Morgan Story Stage 2

“Early last year I found a neglected 1954 Transition Model Plus 4 in Tasmania and trailered it home to Melbourne. Before Christmas 2018 “Molly Morgan “ received a complete mechanical overhaul and a new wiring loom. I’d not intended a repaint in the short term however finding a small area of rust inevitably led to a few more surprises involving corrosion and amateur repairs made decades ago but no real horror stories. So with the help of a talented friend, I pulled the car apart.

By June the Molly was ready for some minor body work and new paint. My dream had long been a black car with red leather trim. In fact that was how this car exited the Malvern factory in 1954. My style advisor suggested something a bit brighter and light hearted so we ended up with a variation of Grabber Blue (a Ford colour). Trim will be stock black vinyl for now. Two weeks ago my painter called with the good news that the Morgan was ready to go.

Mostly. Everything except for the bonnet and front fenders was painted so now the assembly task begins. Job 1 was fitting the wing- piping. A fiddly job. This week the rear fenders go on. In theory everything should line up and the shiny new stainless steel nuts and bolts should fit without any problems. Just like my Meccano set which is about the same age. Manhandling the front fenders is a bugger of a job! They’re approximately 3 metres long and need several strong persons to lift into place.

With a some serious hard work and a bit of good luck assembly should be completed prior to Christmas. Registration before the end of Summer is a real possibility.”

David Jenkins Peter Morgan visit 1979

2019 would have been Peter Morgan’s 100th birthday, it is also 40 years since he visited Victoria in 1979. The following article is from the “Australian Sports Car World Quarterly February-April 1979” magazine. It re- cords part of Peter’s visit at the new premises of Museum Motors and Calder Sports Cars. Aproximately 40 Morgans from nearly all states attended. Five of the people helping the bogged car have been identified as possibly Malcolm Colquhoun, Peter D‘Olivera, Terry Doyle with Wendy Baneth looking in the window. In the yellow car it could be Peter D’Olivera with his pipe. Do you recognise any cars or people?

Importing Cars into Australia

The regulations change on 10 December, for importing cars into Australia. For importing early Morgans the main change will be the move from pre 1989 to a rolling date of more than 25 years old at build or latest modification date to meet the main pathway criteria.

There is a lot of information on the websites of importers and Government.

In the May 2019 Edition of the AMOC newletter there is an article “Asbestos - some heartening news”. by David Fryer of VCCQ. (Vintage Car Club Queensland). This has been a major concern of anyone wishing to bring a car into Australia.

He names a UK firm who can check/test a car to allow verification of no asbestos in a potential import.
