The discovery of this new entity allowed us to propose another species of Geodina, until now a monospecific genus, and produce the first 28S rDNA genetic data, which supports this species is related to genus Wynnea in the Sarcoscyphaceae. Angelini & Medardi (2012) published a first report of ascomycetes in which 12 lignicolous species including discomycetes and pyrenomycetes were described and illustrated in detail, also delineating the physical and botanical characteristics of the research area. -

PFISTER dpfi[email protected] Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, Harvard University, 22 Divinity Ave., Cambridge, MA 02138, USA Shuichi Kur ogi Miyazaki Museum, 2-4-4 Jingu, Miyazaki City 7880-0053, Japan Abstract–A study of Chorioactis geaster (Sarcosomataceae) has shown the presence of several unreported or unconfirmed characters for this unusual and rare operculate discomycete. The ascospores are ornamented, they mature more or less simultaneously in all asci of a single ascoma, and asci have a thin hyphal base. The species is compared with species of the genera Cookeina and Microstoma (Sarcoscyphaceae) that also have this character. SEM shows open asci have a two-layered opercular region confirming TEM reports of differentiated wall layering in this region of the ascus. These features are discussed and the isolated systematic position of Chorioactis suggested by previous studies is confirmed. Key words–Ascus morphology, ascospore maturation, spore ornamentation Introduction Recently we showed that Chorioactis geaster (Peck) Kupfer ex Eckblad populations in Japan and North America represent distinct but closely related lineages. Molecular clock estimates suggest that they have probably been separate for at least 19 million years (Peterson et al. 2004). In the course of that study we examined a number of collections and determined that morphologically we could not distinguish the North American and Japanese collections. Our detailed studies, however, uncovered morphological features of the species that had not been noted previously. These observations are reported here. -

Les genres de Pézizales à asques suboperculés rangés jusqu'ici dans la famille des Sarcosomataceae (sensu Kobayasi) sont placés dans la famille des Sarcoscyphaceae Le Gal ex Eckblad, amendée en ce sens, et conservée dans les Pézizales. Les asques du genre type de la famille des Sarcosomataceae, Sarcosoma, ainsi que ceux des genres Urnula et Plectania ne sont pas suboperculés car l'épaisissement apical de la couche d de leur paroi n'est pas subdivisé en deux sous-couches. La définition de cette famille doit donc aussi être amendée. L' Urnula helvelloides Donadini, Berthet et Astier a des asques operculés, dont, à l'apex, la couche d est non seulement épaissie mais subdivisée en deux sous-couches dl et d 2, comme chez le genre Plectania, dont il diffère cependant par ailleurs. Il est donc placé dans le genre nouveau Donadinia Bellemère et Meléndez-Howell. -

A Taxonomic and Phylogenetic Investigation of Conifer Endophytes of Eastern Canada by Joey B. Tanney A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Biology Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2016 Abstract Research interest in endophytic fungi has increased substantially, yet is the current research paradigm capable of addressing fundamental taxonomic questions? More than half of the ca. 30,000 endophyte sequences accessioned into GenBank are unidentified to the family rank and this disparity grows every year. The problems with identifying endophytes are a lack of taxonomically informative morphological characters in vitro and a paucity of relevant DNA reference sequences. A study involving ca. 2,600 Picea endophyte cultures from the Acadian Forest Region in Eastern Canada sought to address these taxonomic issues with a combined approach involving molecular methods, classical taxonomy, and field work. It was hypothesized that foliar endophytes have complex life histories involving saprotrophic reproductive stages associated with the host foliage, alternative host substrates, or alternate hosts. Based on inferences from phylogenetic data, new field collections or herbarium specimens were sought to connect unidentifiable endophytes with identifiable material. Approximately 40 endophytes were connected with identifiable material, which resulted in the description of four novel genera and 21 novel species and substantial progress in endophyte taxonomy. Endophytes were connected with saprotrophs and exhibited reproductive stages on non-foliar tissues or different hosts. These results provide support for the foraging ascomycete hypothesis, postulating that for some fungi endophytism is a secondary life history strategy that facilitates persistence and dispersal in the absence of a primary host. -

Many genera have a morphology similar to Trichaleurina, such as Bulgaria and Galiella. Some previous reports had been described fungi like Trichaleurina as Sarcosoma. Indonesia has been reported that has Trichaleurina specimen (the new name of Sarcosoma) by Boedijn. This research aimed to obtain, characterize, and determine the Trichaleurina around IPB University. Field exploration for fungal samples was used in the Landscape Arboretum of IPB University. Ascomata of Trichaleurina were collected, observed, and preserved using FAA. The specimen was deposited into Herbarium Bogoriense with collection code BO 24420. The molecular phylogenetic tree using RAxML was used to identify the species of the specimen. Morphological data were used to support the species name of the specimen. Specimen BO 24420 was identified as Tricahleurina javanica with 81% bootstrap value. Molecular identification was supported by the morphological data, such as the two oil globules and the size of mature ascospores.
