However, the PH government, led by ex-premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, only lasted 22 months. Accordingly, the sudden collapse of the PH government drew many to offer their respective analyses. James Chin (2020) wrote one of them titled ‘Malaysia: The 2020 Putsch for Malay Islam Supremacy’. He argued that, amongst the many reasons attributable to its sudden collapse, one stood out – the position of Islam and Malay supremacy in Malaysia. Since Malaysia is predominantly a Malay-Muslim country, such a profound claim warrants a thorough response. Thus, this study’s objective is to analyse and offer critiques on Chin’s work based on the three main factors, namely the concept of Malay supremacy, unreadiness of Malays to share power with non-Malays and the position of non-Malays e ISSN 2735 - 1904 https://doi.org/10.22452/JOMAS.vol32no1.8 118 Jurnal Pengajian Melayu - JOMAS, Jilid 32(1), 2021: 118-137 in the top government positions.

  • The Malaysian State and the Régulation of Labour: from Colonial Economy to K-Economy
The Malaysian State and the Régulation of Labour: From Colonial Economy to K-Economy Donna Turner B. A. (Honours) Curtin University This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Murdoch University 2006 Abstract This thesis explores the state-labour nexus emerging out of the processes through which governing authorities have attempted to maintain or regain political stability and rates of accumulation in Malay(a)sia. Existing studies usefully highlight the extent to which repressive industrial relations legislation and ethnic communalism have weakened the trade union movement and segmented the labour force delivering the relative industrial peace attractive to foreign investors. Some suggest labour’s discontent at this repression has been successfully contained by Malaysia’s relatively strong economic performance. These approaches, however, only partially acknowledge the extent to which labour’s social reproduction under capitalist relations generates political and economic contradictions. After an initial failure to address these contradictions in the early post-colonial era, the Malay-dominated government has since developed avenues through which to deliver economic and cultural concessions in a selective and paternalistic fashion. This economic paternalism has contributed to social stability but has diverted funds from economic development and now runs contrary to structural reforms that seek to address Malaysia’s declining international competitiveness. The transition towards a knowledge-based economy, referred to locally as the k-economy, therefore embodies efforts by the political elite to contain political and societal tensions emerging out of the reform process. This thesis demonstrates and analyses the dynamic, contingent and uneven nature of these efforts as the government seeks to establish new bases of legitimacy more closely linked to household consumption concerns than iii ethnicity.

ABSTRACT This report is one of a series of publications resulting from a survey and research project to investigate the influence of certain economic and institutional factors on couples' fertility behavior in Peninsular Malaysia. It includes maps and verbal descriptions of the 52 primary sampling units in the sample. The descriptions are based on interview with knowledgeable local officials and residents and on personal observations, all made in 1976 and 1977. An important part of the survey has been documentation of community and public program characteristics that might affact people's economic and demographic behavior. Working with a list of specific ques tions and more general areas of interest, the author attempts to describe each Primary Sampling Unit(PSU) in detail. Both current characteristics and recent historical data are of interest. Background information about Peninsular Malaysia and the definition of a PSU are presented. PSU descriptions are organized in three sections: main market centers, other urban towns, and rural. Forty-nine of these PSUs were selected using probability sampling methods and constitute a random sample of the 6125 PSUs in Peninsular Malaysia.

The Silence and Fantasy of Women and Work A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree Doctor of Philosophy from University of Wollongong by Vicki Denese Crinis History and Politics Program and CAPSTRANS Research Institute March 2004 Candidate’s Certificate I, Vicki Denese Crinis, declare that this thesis, submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy, in the Department of History and Politics, University of Wollongong, is wholly my own work unless otherwise referenced or acknowledged. The document has not been submitted for qualifications at any other academic institution. Vicki Crinis ii Abstract This thesis examines the discursive representation of working-class women and work in the development of the Malay Peninsula during the colonial and post-colonial periods. It questions the selective appearance of women’s labour in official records, and traces representations of women and work in the colonial discourses of the 1900s through to those that supported Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Bin Mohamad’s vision for a modern Malaysia in order to analyse the continuities and discontinuities in Malaysian concepts about women and work. My research reveals that in the colonial period women were engaged in many types of waged work in the Federated Malay States, but only sex workers receive more than peripheral attention in archival documents. The societal positioning of women within the family context as wives, daughters and mothers served to deny women’s status and identity as worker. However, women’s socially accepted roles did not prevent them from being represented in anthropological and fictional texts of the period as part of the orientalist discourse of the exotic ‘other’.

Annual Report 2000 Pe n g u r usan Danaharta Nasional Berha d C O V E R R A T I O N A L E P e n g u rusan Danaharta Nasional Berh a d was set up in June 1998 to take over non- performing loans (NPLs) from financial institutions in Malaysia and resolve them whilst seeking maximum recovery value. Whilst the diamond may not necessarily reflect the quality of Danaharta’s assets (NPLs), certain characteristics can be used to depict various aspects of Danaharta’s operations. F rom humble beginnings as a piece of carbon, diamonds withstand tre m e n d o u s pressure to emerge the hardest stone known to Man, often being used as an industrial cutting tool. In a similar fashion, Danaharta has had to withstand tremendous pressure to set up operations and carve out NPLs, from beleaguered financial institutions, that are then expeditiously resolved. The diamond’s most famous quality, its translucence, is re p resentative of Danaharta’s efforts to be open, transparent and professional in its policies and operations. Finally, diamonds are valuable. In the same manner, Danaharta regards its employees as precious to the agency’s cause and whose collective efforts determine its eventual success. COALITION POLITICS IN MALAYSIA Zakiah Awang, M.A. Western Michigan University, 1983 This thesis has attempted to explain the success and the stability of the coalition party system in Malaysia from 1955 to 1982. This success has been attributed to three factors. The most important factor is the role played by political elites. Malaysian political elites come from a different racial background. It is their willingness to cooperate, work together in harmony and to find solutions through compromises that helped to hold the coalition party together. Elite cooperation, in turn, has been fostered through similarities in the leaders' socio- educational-linguistic backgrounds. The success of the coalition party is also closely linked to the dominant role of UMNO which is the leader and the strongest party in the coalition.
