The goal was to create a comprehensive and complete new program, which incorporated the anatomical alignment and progression of Asanas in Iyengar Yoga, and combine it with the energetic aspects of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga viz. Bandhas, Drishti, Ujjayi Pranayama and Vinyasa. We learned in Iyengar Yoga how to progressively practice postures. For example with Backbends, you perform an easy pose to warm up, a stronger pose to work more deeply, and then the strongest pose of the session – challenging yourself in a safe and methodical manner. This safe and methodical approach – carefully easing deeper into postures, was not a concept we found in Ashtanga Yoga. In fact, as we progressed through the Series (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th) we could not discern any logical sequencing. It was as if someone had written down the various yoga poses on pieces of paper, thrown them into a hat, and pulled them out at random. With traditional Ashtanga, you only progress if you can do the postures in the Series order and if not, you stay stuck on the particular challenging pose, until you can.

Iyengar Ruth Ann Bradley is an Intermediate Junior II Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher. She is the founder and owner of the Yoga Institute of Broward in Cooper City, Florida, established in 1998. (www.yogabroward.com) Ruth falls in the ranKs of countless others that have turned to Iyengar yoga to find relief and healing after a life-changing event. A horse racing accident in 1985 left her with numerous broKen bones in her leg, anKle and foot. With the help of Iyengar yoga, she feels she was better equipped to deal with the 28 years of chronic pain that eventually led her to a Total AnKle Replacement in 2013. Ruth says: “My attraction to yoga started at a young age when I spotted one of those ‘pocKet booKs’ sold at the grocery store checKout lines. At the time, the booK cost maybe 25 cents and the photo on the front was a woman standing on her head. I convinced my mother to buy it for me and that is what started my yoga practice. Research is beginning to demonstrate that individuals who suffer the effects of trauma have often experienced several negative events that accumulate over the course of one’s lifetime. It has been displayed that when treated early, the adverse effects of trauma may be much less debilitating. Recent studies indicate traumatic memories are often stored within the body and are difficult to recall through cognition alone. In 2007, she moved to Miami and started teaching yoga. Introduction t its heart, hatha yoga is more than just flexibility or strength in postures; it is the management of prana, the vital life force that animates all levels of being. Prana enables the body to move and the mind to think. It is the intelligence that coordinates our senses, and the perceptible manifestation of our higher selves. By becoming more attentive to prana—and enhancing and directing its flow through the Apractices of hatha yoga—we can invigorate the body and mind, develop an expanded inner awareness, and open the door to higher states of consciousness. The yoga tradition describes five movements or functions of prana known as the vayus (literally “winds”)—prana vayu (not to be confused with the undivided master prana), apana vayu, samana vayu, udana vayu, and vyana vayu. These five vayus govern different areas of the body and different physical and subtle activities.

Surya (Sun) Namaskars (Namas=to bow, ka=to do) have been practiced in various forms for thousands of years. The ritual of acknowledging the sun’s role in our lives has been woven into many cultures. The particular form of exercise and mediation that is laid out here comes from the Ashtanga tradition. This sequence itself is fairly modern and has its roots in the work of Krishnamacharya in the 1930s. It is often practiced after doing integration work, to wake up the body, as a warm-up to the rest of the practice. You may recognize its cousin, the burpee from a calisthenics practice. By moving the body through a range of motion in a mindful and deliberate way connected with breath, you allow the yoga practitioner to begin to connect the mind back with body as well as build up some heat.
