SUMMER 2019 A UNIVERSE OF STORIES bibblib.org FROM THE DIRECTOR Welcome to a Universe of Stories! This summer, we encourage you to explore the universe, whether we look to the stars to imagine the secrets they possess, or we delve into the galaxies we each hold within us. The Universe of Stories encompasses the science of space exploration, the imaginative worlds of science fiction, and so much more. We think you’ll find there’s something for everyone. As we explore the Universe of Stories, we invite you to take advantage of all the opportunities you’ll find at your local libraries, whether it is checking out passes for adventures across the state, stopping by a branch for a puppet show, trivia night, or space craft, or just finding the perfect summer read to enjoy on a quiet afternoon. Summer Reading Programs have been a tradition in American public libraries for generations, but do you know why this yearly rite has stood the test of time? Here are just some of the reasons you should sign up for the 2019 Summer Reading Program today! • Summer Reading encourages reading to become a lifelong habit. Building an early reading habit helps kids from pre-K on. Students who read independently score higher on achievement tests in all subject areas, and have greater content knowledge than those who do not. • Reluctant readers can be drawn in by the activities, and without the pressures of school, they can find the right book to spark their love of reading. If you or your child needs help to find the perfect book, your librarian can help you find something to excite everyone. • Summer learning loss is a major problem for school-aged children. Kids spend up to two months of every school year recovering the reading skills they lost over the summer. Participating in a summer reading program helps children keep their skills up! Reading helps build focus and concentration, and readers are better writers. • Making a habit of reading helps to build vocabulary, improve memory, and reduce stress. Reading for a few minutes at bedtime also helps improve sleep. This is true for readers of any age, so families can make reading a habit together and reap the rewards together too. The Summer Reading Program also provides something that many families need more of- an opportunity to have fun and spend time together. That family time costs nothing but means everything.
