CITY OF ATLANTA

55 TRINITY AVE, S.W. ATLANTA, 30335-0300

TEL (404) 330-6100 Kasim Reed MAYOR October 18, 2011 Greetings Constituents and Friends: The city of Atlanta’s Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA) continues to serve as a valuable asset to the cultural vitality of the city. Citizens and visitors to Atlanta benefit from the cultural connections and artistic identity that brings us all together to enjoy the heart and soul of this great city.

During these difficult times for the arts economy, the Office of Cultural Affairs remains steadfast in its passionate approach to programming, education and the arts. Such cultural exposure encourages creative thinking, increased scholastic aptitude and a greater sense of self confidence in our youth. During 2010-2011, the OCA launched the Culture Club: An After School Experience to provide Atlanta school children with , drama, art instruction and tutoring at three designated cultural centers—Gilbert House, JD Sims Center and South Bend Center for Art & Culture. The launch of such an innovative program has given more than 60 Atlanta students a diverse outlook on their communities and their role in our society.

In addition to afterschool programs, the Office of Cultural Affairs ensures that everyone within the city experiences the vibrancy of Atlanta through programs like: • ARTSCool, which provides Atlanta teens an opportunity to work as apprentices under the instruction of noted local artists; • the Chastain Arts Center, which offers art instruction to children and adults; • Contracts for Arts Services, which provides grant funding to local artists and arts organizations; • the Cultural Experience Project, a program that ensures students receive exposure to a broad range of premiere cultural venues and programs within the city; and • Public Art Program, which ensures that our city’s landscape reflects its cultural character; • the Atlanta Jazz Festival, which has been the nation’s largest free jazz festival for 34 years.

Arts and culture offer economic contributions to our communities, give an eclectic range of citizens and friends a creative form of expression, and can transform talented children into notable artists. As we chart our course for the future, we must remember the role that arts and culture have on our communities and our economy.

On behalf of the city of Atlanta, the OCA staff and volunteers, I hope you will join us in becoming an active participant in our city’s arts community.

Sincerely,

Kasim Reed THE COMMISSIONER

CITY OF ATLANTA 233 PEACHTREE STREET HARRIS TOWER, SUITE 1700 G E O R G E D USENBURY , I V ATLANTA, GEORGIA 30303 K A S I M R EED COMMISSIONER (404) 546-6788 DEPARTMENT OF PARKS, RECREATION MAYOR AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS website www.ocaatlanta.com

Greetings Friends and Supporters:

Once again we are proud to report on the achievements of the Department’s Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA). The City of Atlanta Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs (DPRCA) is committed to improving the quality of life for Atlanta’s citizens and visitors and works diligently to maintain a dynamic cultural landscape. The Office of Cultural Affairs continues to provide Atlanta with innovative cultural programs and activities that not only feed the soul but also benefit our great city.

During the 2010‐2011 Fiscal Year, DPRCA proudly brought the 34th Annual Atlanta Jazz Festival, one of the oldest and largest free jazz festivals produced in the , to the people of Atlanta by working diligently to secure funding from outside sponsors and grants. The Atlanta Jazz Festival has long been an important part of Atlanta’s culture and we have already begun preparations to make the 35th Anniversary one of the hottest events the City of Atlanta will produce.

In addition to Performing Arts, the OCA continues to manage several successful projects throughout the year. Culture Club: An After School Experience was launched during this past fiscal year and celebrated great success with popular dance, theater, and music programs operating at all three designated sites: Gilbert House, JD Sims Center and South Bend Center for Art & Culture. ARTSCool (a summer apprentice program for Atlanta’s youth) also celebrated another successful year employing Atlanta teens within an art apprentice program and the City celebrated numerous additions to the Public Art landscape of our parks and attractions. Contract for Arts Services supported arts organizations and individual artists throughout the city through grant opportunities, The Atlanta Cyclorama celebrated continued success as a unique education destination and the Cultural Experience Project successfully provided Atlanta Public Schools students (grades K‐12) with unique educational experiences through exposure to the arts.

None of this would be possible without the support of Mayor Kasim Reed, City Council, City Administration, Neighborhood Planning Units, partnerships and generous donors. The accomplishments highlighted in this Annual Report are the outcome of City teamwork, sound leadership and a dedicated staff. On behalf of the department, I congratulate the Office of Cultural Affairs for being instrumental in creating an eclectic tapestry of art and culture for the citizens and visitors of Atlanta. Many thanks to all of you for contributing to the success of the DPRCA.

Sincerely,

George Dusenbury Commissioner, Department of Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs
