Lewis campus photos by Ron Molk. 1 Lorelee Smith Head Coach — Fifth Season UNC Asheville, 1998 The 2011 season is Lorelee Smith’s fi fth as Lewis’ head women’s volleyball coach. She is the fourth head coach in the 37-year his- tory of the Lewis women’s volleyball program. Smith has compiled a 122-22 record in four seasons at Lewis. She has guided Lewis to Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships in 2007, 2008 and 2010 and regular season titles in 2008, 2009 and 2010. She was named the GLVC Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2010. The Flyers have qualifi ed for the NCAA Tournament in each of her four seasons. During Smith’s tenure Lewis has set school records for consecutive victories (27) and consecutive home victo- ries (41). In 2010, the Flyers compiled a 27-5 record with a 13-1 total in the GLVC. Lewis won the GLVC, advanced to the NCAA Tournament and fi nished the season ranked 14th in the nation. Setter Rachel Ruedi was named GLVC Player of the Year and took home AVC All- American Second Team honors. Outside hitter Lauren Seliga was named AVCA All-America Honorable Mention. Smith was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Coach of the Year in 2009 after guiding her club to a perfect 14-0 GLVC record and 32-5 overall mark. Lewis fi nished the 2009 season ranked No. 9 in nation, Lewis’ highest ranking in the history of the Divi- sion II AVCA Poll. The 2009 Flyers earned a trip to the NCAA Sweet 16, their second in three seasons under Smith, by sweeping Ferris State and Saginaw Valley State in the NCAA Tournament. Outside hitter Stephanie Sagat was named the GLVC Player of the Year, Daktronics Midwest Region Player of the Year and took home AVCA All-American Second Team accolades. She became Lewis’ career leader in kills, graduating with 1,676. Ruedi earned AVCA All-American Honorable Mention. The 2008 Flyers won the GLVC Championship by compiling a 31-8 overall record and 16-2 conference mark. The Flyers hosted and won the GLVC Tournament to fi nish with a perfect 19-0 record at home. Sagat, Ruedi and Sara deBuhr earned all-conference accolades. Sagat and deBuhr took home all-region nods. Lewis ranked as high as No. 15 in the AVCA Poll. Smith’s 2007 Flyers recorded the highest winning percentage (.889, 32-4) in school history on their way to a GLVC Cham- pionship. The squad also set team records for sweeps (22), digs (2,561) and assists (1,923). In the NCAA Tournament, Lewis recorded victories over Ashland and Indianapolis to advance to the Sweet 16. The Flyers ranked No. 11 in the fi nal AVCA Poll of the season. Prior to arriving at Lewis, Smith served as assistant women’s volleyball coach at the University of Central Missouri for fi ve seasons. At Central Missouri, Smith worked under head coach Peggy Martin, the winningest coach in NCAA Division II his- tory. The Jennies fi nished in the top 10 nationally and had nine All-America selections during Smith’s time as an assistant. 2 Prior to joining the staff at Central Missouri, Smith served two seasons as girls’ junior varsity volleyball coach at John Adams High School in South Bend, Indiana. Smith played college volleyball at the University of North Carolina-Asheville under head coach Julie Torbett. In 2010 she was inducted into UNC Asheville’s Athletics Hall of Fame. An Academic All-America selection her senior season, Smith was a four-time all-conference and two-time all-region pick. She also was a Big South Conference Scholar Athlete. Smith fi nished her collegiate career as the university’s, conference’s and region’s all-time assist record holder. Smith has played volleyball professionally with the Midwest Professional Volleyball Association. She competes in the United States Volleyball Association and is a contracted tour player and spokesperson for Extreme Volleyball Professionals, a beach volleyball tour. A native of Mishawaka, Indiana, Smith is a graduate of Misha- waka High School. She received her bachelor’s degree in man- agement/marketing from UNC Asheville in 1998 and earned a Master of Business Administration degree from UCM. The Post-Corbett Award recognizes outstanding contribu­ tions to the Cincinnati art community by organizations, businesses, vo lunteer groups, individuals, and artist in literature, visual art, and performing disciplines. The Year-End-Series (YES) new play festival was honored in the arts organization category for " presenting premieres of new plays and encouraging young playwrights by offering a production forum for their works," reported the office of university publications. The YES Festival, created in 1983, was the brainchild of Jack Wann, NKU theater director, and Jim Stacey, a former colleague. Wann said that he and Stacey came up with the "idea" six years ago to give "struggling playwrights the op­ portunity they needed to get plays produced." Wann commented that NKU has become a "springboard" for young playwrights. "We learn from them as well as they do from us," said Wann. NKU receives about 300 entries a year for the festival. The YES Festival is produced every other year during spring semester.
