John Kilpatrick Director of Television Operations, Department of Communications, and Three-time Emmy Award Winner What most people know about Lewis Broadcast Communications instructor and alumnus John Kilpatrick is that he’s the University’s Emmy Award-winning professor. As one of 16 editors for the Oprah Winfrey show, Professor Kilpatrick has won Emmy Awards for “Outstanding Achievement in Multiple Camera Editing” in 2000, 2002 and in 2004. He’s been nominated for an Emmy ten times for his work on the show. What most people don’t know about Professor Kilpatrick is that despite his national recognition in the field of television, teaching is truly his real love. “I have a job [teaching], but to me it’s not a job. It’s a love and a passion,” he asserts. “Helping my students get prepared for the real world, and learning from them as much as I teach them, is what keeps me going in life. I want my students to go one step farther in life than I did, to achieve a goal greater than mine,” Kilpatrick says. “That would be a great accomplishment for me. At that point my life will have come full circle.”

KC chose Lewis because the College of Education had a “great reputation.” KC said, “I thought since I was a commuter student, that I wouldn’t make friends, but the opposite is true! I have made a ton of friends—I love it here!” exclaimed KC. “There are so many ways to become involved on campus,” said KC. Strong Minds. Strong Bodies. Lewis University has been a proud, highly successful member of NCAA Division II and the Great Lakes Valley Conference for more than a quarter of a century. Flyer teams have captured 82 GLVC championships and have made 146 NCAA postseason appearances. Lewis has won the GLVC All- Sports Trophy 13 times and, in 1996 and 2001, finished 10th nationally among Division II institutions in the annual National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics competition that recognizes the nation’s top intercollegiate athletics programs. Lewis also is a member of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (men’s volleyball) and the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (men’s and women’s swimming). Bedcheck Charlie, also known as Men’s Women’s the Lewis Flyer, became the University’s mascot in 1964. Lewis University men’s tennis player Lorenz Pestinger had the uncanny ability to rack up aces on the tennis court and ace his tests at the same time, as the Bad Homburg, Germany native was the 2011 male recipient of the Brother David Delahanty Senior Student-Athlete Award.

PROFILE STUDENT Pestinger, who was named the Lewis Male Senior Student-Athlete of the Year, owned a 4.0 cumulative GPA with a double-major in business administration and marketing. He is a two-time Br. David Delahanty Award winner, given to Lewis student-athletes for academic success, and a two-time Academic All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honoree. On the court, Pestinger was second on the team with a singles record of 19-9. In doubles action, Pestinger was a combined 21-7. In his rookie season with the Flyers in 2009-10, Pestinger made a seamless transition to the Division II men’s tennis game, as he won 19 singles matches, primarily at No. 5, while earning a combined total of 21 doubles victories. That performance helped Lewis to its first ever berth into theN CAA Men’s Tennis Tournament. A member of the Delta Epsilon Sigma National Catholic Honor Society, Pestinger is the son of Andrea Wiemers- Pestinger and Gunther Pestinger.

24 | Carol Kruckman Biology major, Women’s Basketball Libertyville High School Libertyville, Illinois

Carol Kruckman is the 2011 female recipient of the Brother David Delahanty Senior Student Athlete Award. STUDENT PROFILE Kruckman, a member of the Lewis women’s basketball team, is a biology major with a 3.99 grade point average. A native of Libertyville, Ill. and a Libertyville High School graduate she has made the Deans’ List seven times and earned her fourth Academic All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honor at the conclusion of the 2010-11 season. Her senior campaign was the best of her career. She appeared in 29 games with seven starts. She scored 176 points and grabbed 51 rebounds including 26 on the offensive glass. Kruckman finished the season with a team-best 54.2 percent GLVC Great Lakes Valley Conference field goal percentage.S he had seven games of double-digit points. Kruckman helped her squad Bellarmine University (Ken.) (Mo.) win the 2010-11 GLVC Championship and earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament. (Mo.) Saint Joseph’s College (Ind.) Kruckman is the president of the Tri Beta Biological Kentucky Wesleyan College University of Illinois-Springfield Honors Society.
