Crestwood PD Does Its Best at ‘Five-0 at the Dirty (Cont'd from page 1) The winner of the first Five-0 at the Dirty O was Jerry Lehmacher of the Lemont Police Department, with Adam Thibo of Midlothian Police Department taking 2nd. But everyone who participated, and who got to see the faces of the Special Olympics athletes cheering them on, knew that they were all winners in this wonderful event.

Not only do we celebrate the participants who drove on the track, but we also need to call out those participants behind the scenes who helped through sponsorships both monetary and in-kind. Public Safety Direct sponsored several cars from the local departments, and has been a major supporter of the Crestwood Police Department and Special Olympics. Through the generosity of Public Safety Direct, each of the cars the company sponsored were provided with emergency lighting and decals.

Key West Metal Industries also played a major role in getting the cars race-ready. To ensure the safety of those driving the vehicles, Key West provided the roll bars and extra door supports necessary to keeping the racers safe. Tony and Matt devoted an entire Saturday to the outfitting of the cars, welding each piece into place to ensure that all the drivers would walk away from the event.

Crestwood’s own John Redmond also got in on the action, devoting numerous hours of his time to get the cars “race ready,” removing the interiors, windows, headlights and taillights, as well as tuning up the cars and getting them ready to roll.

B&R Towing and Fair Towing made their services available to get the cars to the track on race day. August 2017 Number 485 Crestwood Adviser 11

Watching the Eclipse Safely On Monday, Aug. 21st, 2017, the moon will pass in between the sun and the Earth. Here in Crestwood, we’ll experience a partial eclipse lasting 2-3 hours that many may want to take the opportunity to view. But looking directly at the sun, even during a partial eclipse, is not considered safe.

So how does one safely observe this monumental phenomenon when it takes place? Not with ordinary sunglasses. Even very dark sunglasses are not safe for looking directly at the sun. According to NASA, only four manufacturers have certified their solar viewers or eclipse-viewing eyewear as having met the ISO 12312-2 international standard required for safe solar observation: Rainbow Symphony, American Paper Optics, Thousand Oaks Optical and TSE 17.

Whatever solar filter you choose, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

• Always inspect the lenses or filters before using them. If the surface is scratched or otherwise damaged, DO NOT USE, and promptly discard. Follow any directions provided with the solar filter, and remember that children’s use should always be supervised.

• Stand still and cover your eyes with your eclipse glasses or solar viewer before looking up at the bright sun. After glancing at the sun, turn away before uncovering your eyes. Do NOT remove them while still looking at the sun.

• Do not look at the sun through and unfiltered camera, telescope, binoculars, or other means. SPECIAL WARNING: Do not look at the sun through any of the above even with your eclipse glasses or sun filter. The A partial solar eclipse will take place Aug. 21st, but be sure to take precautions to view this natural wonder safely. (Credit: Wikimedia/Tom Ruen) concentration of the rays passing through the lenses will damage the filter and can cause serious injury to your eyes. Seek expert advice before using a solar filter of any kind with a camera, telescope, binoculars or other optical Outstretch and slightly open your fingers on both hands, and cross them device. together.
