Transnational Italies: Mobility, Subjectivities and Modern Italian Cultures Conference, The British School at Rome, 26-28 October 2016-10-24 ABSTRACTS 1A - “Moving Borders, Moving Identities” Panel submitted by Eden McLean, Borut Klabjan, Vanni D’Alessio, Maura Hametz Chair: Loredana Polezzi Panel Overview Transnational studies have traditionally concerned themselves with the movement of goods, ideas, and people along and across borders, but not with the movement of the borders themselves. This panel seeks to position the movement of borders as a vital component of any conversation about what it means to be transnational, particularly in Europe’s era of the world wars. The four papers proposed here use case studies from the multiethnic—and transnational— borderlands of northeastern Italy (Trieste, Fiume/Rijeka, the Carso, and Alto Adige) to explore questions of Italian identity, citizenship, and state formation in the first half of the twentieth century. In the years directly following World War I, Italy sought to “redeem” the Italian identity of the populations living in the territories it acquired from the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. As the following papers will show, it sought to do so by imposing an official definition of Italian-ness on resident populations through the simultaneous processes of modifying language, education, and public space and subverting the presence of alternative national or ethnic affiliations. All of these efforts worked not only to transform the cultural landscape of these borderlands, but also to establish the very definition of what it meant to be Italian, at least on the edges of the Italian nation-state. " Mason Sutherland 1 This paper will explore tradition, change and intraethnic differences among Italian-American families whose ancestors settled in Bexar County, Texas, before 1920. After a historical overview, it will contrast immigrant and contemporary attitudes towards fertility, child-rearing patterns, sex ual behavior, friendships and memberships in clubs, and attitudes towards verbal arts, music, and sculpture. Finally, it will contrast the beliefs, technology, norms, values, and language (including nonverbal communica tion) of Italian immigrants and contemporary Italian-Americans. It is hoped that this study will lead to a better understanding of the Italian subculture in Bexar County, and the ways in which that subculture has been affected by the dominant, Southern Anglo-American culture. -

The James Lindahl Papers Papers, 1930s-1950s 29 linear feet Accession #1061 OCLC # DALNET # James Lindahl was born in Detroit in 1911. He served as Recording Secretary for the UAW-CIO Packard Local 190 and edited its newspaper in the 1930s and 1940s. Mr. Lindahl left the local in 1951 feeling that the labor movement no longer had a place for him. He earned a Master's degree from Wayne State University in Sociology in 1954 and later earned his living as a self-employed publisher in the Detroit area in various fields including retail, banking, and medicine. The James Lindahl Collection contains proceedings, reports, newspaper clippings, and election information pertaining to the UAW-CIO and its Packard Local 190 from the 1930s into the early 1950s. It also contains Mr. Lindahl's graduate school papers on local union membership and participation. The collection also contains publications, including pamphlets, books, periodicals, flyers and handbills, from many organizations such as the UAW, CIO, other labor unions and organizations, and the U.S. government from the 1930s into the early 1950s. The Posthumanism of Italo Calvino's Fiabe Italiane
Fairy-Tale Metamorphosis and Becoming–Animal: The Posthumanism of Italo Calvino’s Fiabe Italiane Pablo a Marca Introduction In “Hybriditales: Posthumanizing Calvino,” Serenella Iovino describes Italo Calvino’s literary production as one of “hybriditales,” which she defines as “stories in which reality itself is a continuous flow of crossings” (2014, 220). Both in its historical construction as well as in its materiality, in these texts the human is “permeable to other natures, other matters, and other cultural agents,” meaning that being human already involves surpassing the boundaries of human “nature” (ibid., 219). Such a conception of the human is now part of theoretical discussions that fall under the label of posthumanism. While a standard definition of posthumanism does not exist, it is possible to say that posthumanist theorists typically share a suspicion regarding the historical notion of the human, which placed “man” at the center and created a series of others— woman, non-white, queer, animal, inanimate and so on—that are inferior to him. In reaction to this notion, posthumanism moves past humanism and anthropocentrism (Ferrando 2019, 24). Taking discourses themselves to be shapers of subjectivity and adopting a renewed form of materialism, posthumanists try to rethink the human from an onto–epistemological perspective. In so doing, they demonstrate the arbitrariness of categorical boundaries and address instead the flows between humans and the non-human world. Iovino finds a similar trend in Calvino’s literary production, which can be seen as a hybridization of “human nature” and the non-human world because it depicts crossings among matter, forms and signs (2014, 220). -

Rowney Dr. Timothy Messer-Kruse © 2010 Gary Cirelli All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Douglas Forsyth, Advisor This study poses the question as to why Marxism never developed in the United States as a method of historical analysis until the mid-1960s. In this regard, the only publication attempting to fully address this question was Ian Tyrrell’s book The Absent Marx: Class Analysis and Liberal History in Twentieth-Century America, in which he argued that the lack of Marxist historical analysis is only understood after one examines the internal development of the profession. This internalist argument is incomplete, however, because it downplays the important impact external factors could have had on the development of Marxism within the profession. Keeping this in mind, the purpose of this study is to construct a new argument that takes into account both the internal and external pressures faced by historians practicing Marxism preceding the 1960s. With Tyrrell as a launching pad, it first uses extensive secondary source material in order to construct a framework that takes into account the political and social climate prior to 1960. Highlighting the fact that Marxism was synonymous with Communism in the minds of many, it then examines the ways in which the government tried to suppress Communism and the impact this had on the academy. -
The Acceptance of the Monstrous and Mystical in the Lais of Marie De France and Calvino’S Italian Folktales
ABSTRACT HUMAN WICKEDNESS AND MONSTROUS GOODNESS: THE ACCEPTANCE OF THE MONSTROUS AND MYSTICAL IN THE LAIS OF MARIE DE FRANCE AND CALVINO’S ITALIAN FOLKTALES This thesis examines positive portrayals of anatomically monstrous characters—such as shapeshifters, sirens, and witches—in the Lais of Marie de France and Italo Calvino’s Italian Folktales. It explores the ways in which physically monstrous—but essentially virtuous—figures are contrasted with morally bereft human characters. In these folktales, the juxtaposition with human characters is necessary in order for the positive qualities of the physically monstrous to become apparent. This thesis also discusses the function of monstrosity in the texts. In Marie’s Lais, unlike Calvino’s tales, monstrosity is associated with a critique of the medieval system of matrimony. Finally, this thesis will focus on the prerequisites for redemption for human characters who possess monstrous morals. In the Italian tales, villainous humans are more likely to be redeemed and reintegrated into society if they are male; female characters who question male dominance are largely condemned.
