Transnational Italies: Mobility, Subjectivities and Modern Italian Cultures Conference, The British School at Rome, 26-28 October 2016-10-24 ABSTRACTS 1A - “Moving Borders, Moving Identities” Panel submitted by Eden McLean, Borut Klabjan, Vanni D’Alessio, Maura Hametz Chair: Loredana Polezzi Panel Overview Transnational studies have traditionally concerned themselves with the movement of goods, ideas, and people along and across borders, but not with the movement of the borders themselves. This panel seeks to position the movement of borders as a vital component of any conversation about what it means to be transnational, particularly in Europe’s era of the world wars. The four papers proposed here use case studies from the multiethnic—and transnational— borderlands of northeastern Italy (Trieste, Fiume/Rijeka, the Carso, and Alto Adige) to explore questions of Italian identity, citizenship, and state formation in the first half of the twentieth century. In the years directly following World War I, Italy sought to “redeem” the Italian identity of the populations living in the territories it acquired from the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. As the following papers will show, it sought to do so by imposing an official definition of Italian-ness on resident populations through the simultaneous processes of modifying language, education, and public space and subverting the presence of alternative national or ethnic affiliations. All of these efforts worked not only to transform the cultural landscape of these borderlands, but also to establish the very definition of what it meant to be Italian, at least on the edges of the Italian nation-state. " Mason Sutherland 1 This paper will explore tradition, change and intraethnic differences among Italian-American families whose ancestors settled in Bexar County, Texas, before 1920. After a historical overview, it will contrast immigrant and contemporary attitudes towards fertility, child-rearing patterns, sex ual behavior, friendships and memberships in clubs, and attitudes towards verbal arts, music, and sculpture. Finally, it will contrast the beliefs, technology, norms, values, and language (including nonverbal communica tion) of Italian immigrants and contemporary Italian-Americans. It is hoped that this study will lead to a better understanding of the Italian subculture in Bexar County, and the ways in which that subculture has been affected by the dominant, Southern Anglo-American culture. -

While working as a civilian employee at San Antonio military bases, Curtis devoted much of his time to researching and writing, particularly on San Antonio, the Texas Revolution, and the Alamo. Content Manuscripts, correspondence, source material, and personal items make Abstract: up the Albert Curtis Papers, reflecting years of research and writing on the history of Texas. The bulk of the papers are edited typescripts. Many of these are works on the Texas Revolution, particularly the Battle of the Alamo and commander William Barret Travis. Repository: DRT Collection at Texas A&M University-San Antonio Biographical Note Born in Ohio in 1897, Albert Curtis came to Texas in 1933 after periods of residence in New Orleans, Louisiana, and North Carolina. A visit to the Alamo soon after his arrival sparked an interest in Texas history, an avocation he would pursue for the remainder of his life. After two years residence at the Veterans Administration hospital in Legion, Texas (now part of the town of Kerrville), Curtis moved to San Antonio, taking a room a short distance from the Alamo. -

Sociology Study, November 2016, Vol. 6, No. 11, 706‐712 D doi: 10.17265/2159‐5526/2016.11.004 DAVID PUBLISHING The Effect of Art Music on Pompeo Coppini: Greatest Sculptor of Texas Monuments* Valentino Belfiglioa Abstract Art music has the ability to communicate, entertain, and inspire other artists. Opera is a dramatic multimedia genre which fuses solo and choral singing with instrumental accompaniment, dance, staging, costumes, scenery, and libretto. This multimedia approach can inspire painters, sculptors, poets, writers, and other musicians in their works. Italian opera greatly inspired Pompeo Coppini—the Italian sculptor. In particular, scenes and arias by Verdi and Puccini correlate with specific tasks involved in the creation of a monument. In creating the Alamo cenotaph, Coppini often played Gioacchino Rossini’s opera, “William Tell” (1829) correlating the sacrifices made by Texans for their independence at the Alamo (1836) with the sacrifices made by Swiss patriots in their independence from Austrian tyranny. This case study suggests that art music can enhance creativity and visual attention among artists of all genres. Nau, III PO Box 12275 Austin, Texas 78711 Dear Chairman Nau, I commend the Texas Historical Commission for delaying a decision to move the Alamo Cenotaph. During the 86th Texas Legislature, I joined with many of my colleagues, along with our constituents, in asking that the Alamo Cenotaph, as part of the Alamo Master Plan, not be dismantled or moved. Today, I write to the Texas Historical Commission to again ask you not to allow the Alamo Cenotaph to be moved from its current location. In 1936, The Texas Centennial Commission commissioned the Alamo Cenotaph under the theme the “Spirit of Sacrifice.” Begun in 1937, the Alamo Cenotaph has long stood commemoration for those Texians who gave the ultimate sacrifice and chose to defend the Alamo. Those who were killed during the Fall of the Alamo were not given the honor of a proper Christian burial, rather as retribution for their rebellion their bodies were burned in a funeral pyre. For over eighty years, the Alamo Cenotaph has served as an empty tomb and reminder to all the World of those brave Texians’s who refused to surrender. Their sacrifice was not only for the Alamo—it was for Independence from a radical and dictatorial federal government. Their sacrifice is deserving of honor. The monument memorializing their fight for Liberty should remain in the place their blood was shed. As Texans, we should never allow ourselves to forget the sacrifices made for a free and independent Texas. I urge the Texas Historical Commission to honor the Alamo Defenders’ sacrifice and not move the Alamo Cenotaph. -

Fairy-Tale Metamorphosis and Becoming–Animal: The Posthumanism of Italo Calvino’s Fiabe Italiane Pablo a Marca Introduction In “Hybriditales: Posthumanizing Calvino,” Serenella Iovino describes Italo Calvino’s literary production as one of “hybriditales,” which she defines as “stories in which reality itself is a continuous flow of crossings” (2014, 220). Both in its historical construction as well as in its materiality, in these texts the human is “permeable to other natures, other matters, and other cultural agents,” meaning that being human already involves surpassing the boundaries of human “nature” (ibid., 219). Such a conception of the human is now part of theoretical discussions that fall under the label of posthumanism. While a standard definition of posthumanism does not exist, it is possible to say that posthumanist theorists typically share a suspicion regarding the historical notion of the human, which placed “man” at the center and created a series of others— woman, non-white, queer, animal, inanimate and so on—that are inferior to him. In reaction to this notion, posthumanism moves past humanism and anthropocentrism (Ferrando 2019, 24). Taking discourses themselves to be shapers of subjectivity and adopting a renewed form of materialism, posthumanists try to rethink the human from an onto–epistemological perspective. In so doing, they demonstrate the arbitrariness of categorical boundaries and address instead the flows between humans and the non-human world. Iovino finds a similar trend in Calvino’s literary production, which can be seen as a hybridization of “human nature” and the non-human world because it depicts crossings among matter, forms and signs (2014, 220).
