The objective of the project was to grasp the current state of how people are engaged in the traditional ways of weaving, dyeing and making cloth in the Ryukyu Islands.1 Throughout the project, we came to think it important to understand two points in order to see the direction of those who are engaged in manufacturing textiles in the Ryukyu Islands. The points are: the diversification in ways of engaging in traditional cloth making; and the importance of multi-generational relationship in sustaining traditional cloth making.

The integration of intercultural design of Malaysian textile motifs and Japanese textile motifs will further facilitate both textile industries to be sustained and demanded globally. Besides, Malaysian and Japanese textile motifs can be creatively design on other platforms not limited to the clothes. Therefore, this study is carried out with the aim of integrating the Malaysian textile motifs specifically focuses on batik motifs and Japanese textile motifs through product diversification. This study focuses on integrating both textile motifs and diversified the design on a home décor including wall frame, table clothes, table runner, bed sheets, lamp shades and other potential home accessories. In this concept paper, literature search was conducted to describe about the characteristics of both Malaysian and Japanese textile motifs and also to reveal insights about the practicality and the potential of combining these two worldwide known textile industries. The investigation was conducted to explore new pattern of the combined textiles motifs.

In this month, I am going to talk about fabrics from Komonjo. ●Kanp uku of Ryukyu The images ① and ② at the right side are illustrations of Kanpuku (a ceremonial costume of the Ryukyu Kingdom,it was reserved only for the royal family and for upper -class) which were published in Ryukyu banashi of Morishima Chūryō (issued on 1790, Nakahara Zenchū collection).There is an image of some Satonushi (one of court rank of the Ryukyu Kingdom) who wear the ceremonial costume of Gakudōji (young men who played music or danced) at the time of Edotate (Edo procession) (image ①). Some Gakudōji tie Katakashira (a hairstyle of men in the era of ② Ryukyu Kingdom, a kind of topknot) and use Kanzashi (an ornamental hairpin), they also wear a long robe with wide sleeves. King of Ryukyu wears Usanmō (Chinese style headpiece), Twūishō (Chinese style clothes) with an image of a dragon, a belt, and shoes (image ②). According to Ryukyukoku raiheiki (issued in about 1832, Iha Fuyū collection), the costumes were called as “Kin” or “Chin” in Ryukyuan dialect (image ③). ●Textile fabrics (Bingata : one of the traditional dyeing technique in Okinawa) The images ④ and ⑤ at the left side are materials from ① “Bingata Ko Ryukyu” (issued in 1928, Iha Fuyū collection). The image ④ is Jitsubutsu Kireji (a real cloth which is attached to a book page) of Bingata. Its brightly colored pattern is called Kotengara, which created by using a technique of Katazome (paste- resist dyeing).

    Resist dyeing - Wikipedia Page 1 of 3 Resist dyeing From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Resist dyeing (resist-dyeing) is a term for a number of traditional methods of dyeing textiles with patterns. Methods are used to "resist" or prevent the dye from reaching all the cloth, thereby creating a pattern and ground. The most common forms use wax, some type of paste made from starch or mud,[1] or a mechanical resist that manipulates the cloth such as tying or stitching. Another form of resist involves using a chemical agent in a specific type of dye that will repel another type of dye printed over the top. The best-known varieties today include tie-dye and batik. Wherever the wax has seeped through the fabric, the dye will not penetrate. Sometimes several colors are used, with a series of dyeing, drying and waxing steps. The wax may also be applied to another piece of cloth to make a stencil, which is then placed over the cloth, and dye applied to the assembly; this is known as resist printing. Paper stencils may also be used; another type of resist printing. The same method is used in art in printmaking, in one form of screenprinting. Mechanical: the cloth is tied,stitched, or clamped using clothespegs or wooden blocks to shield areas of the fabric.

[email protected] When one thinks of a blue dye, one usually thinks of the Indian indigo, as Indians had mastered the art of dyeing blue using indigo in 3rd millennium BCE when most of the developed countries of today only could use it to dye black as late as in 13th century CE. When Marco Polo visited India, he was surprised to see blue colour achieved by indigo at Colium in State of Travancore. He said “They (Indians) also have abundance of a very fine indigo (ynde).” (cited Tolat, Vol. I 1980: 29) 1. Natural Indigo Plants and the Dye In India, the natural indigo of commerce was extracted from the leaves of species of plants belonging to genus Indigofera. In India about 40 species of Indigofera genus are found, out of which four were commercially exploited for bulk production due to their higher dye content and their suitability to the climates and soil of the place of cultivation. These were Indigoferaarrecta, Indigoferasuffruticosa (I. anil), IndigoferaSumatrana and Indigoferatinctorial (Tolat, 1980, p. 50). From the leaves of these plants, the indigo dye was extracted by steeping the plants in water, beating the liquid obtained after steeping, collecting the settled dye from the vat, and then draining it to make the paste, boiling the paste and compressing it into the cakes and finally drying them to sell in the markets. These indigo dye cakes, which are very light in weight, were transported to various centres in India as well were exported.
