From the A7 motorway (Coming from the north) you are travelling on the A7 • leave the motorway at exit 63 AS Derneburg-Salzgitter • follow the B6 in the direction of Salzgitter • pass through Salzgitter and Goslar • on approaching Bad Harzburg, follow the signs in the direction of Braunschweig • on approaching Vienenburg, stop following the signs in the direction of Braunschweig; now follow the signs towards Wernigerode • this means you follow the A36 • leave the A36 at exit Wernigerode Nord • drive onto the B244 in the direction of Elbingerode • when you have reached the marketplace in Elbingerode, turn left onto the B27 towards the Rübeland lime production plant • please follow the signs You have arrived at your destination. From the A7 motorway (Coming from the south) you are travelling on the A7 • leave the motorway at exit 72 AS Göttingen-Nord • drive onto the A388 • which changes into the B3 • at the first traffic light, continue straight on – onto the B27 • drive through Herzberg am Harz, Bad Lauterberg im Harz, Braunlage and Elbingerode (Harz) • on approaching Rübeland, you should be able to see the Rübeland lime production plant on your right • please follow the signs You have arrived at your destination. From the A7 (Coming from the north) Coming from the north • leave the motorway via 63 AS Derneburg-Salzgitter • follow the B6 in the direction of Salzgitter • you will pass Salzgitter and Goslar • at Bad Harzburg follow the signs in the direction of Braunschweig • at Vienenburg, however, no longer follow the signs in the direction of Braunschweig, but in the direction of Wernigerode -you therefore follow the A36 • at Blankenburg (Harz) you leave the A36 at the AS Blankenburg-Zentrum • leave the coming roundabout via the 3rd exit and follow the street "Am Hasenwinkel" and take the next right onto B6/B81 • after a short time turn right onto the B27 • drive through Hüttenrode • drive through Rübeland • take the second exit at the roundabout in Elbingerode and continue on the B27 • shortly after leaving Elbingerode, cross a bridge, turn right immediately after and then keep left • after a few hundred metres you will reach the Hornberg lime works. As a result, Geoparks can be distinguished as UNESCO Global Geoparks. Among the fi rst 120 UNESCO Global Geoparks, spread throughout 33 countries around the world, is Geopark Harz · Braunschweiger Land · Ostfalen. UNESCO-Geoparks are clearly defi ned, unique areas, in which locations and landscapes of international geological importance are found.     © Lonely Planet Publications 229 Harz Mountains The Harz Mountains rise picturesquely from the North German Plain, covering an area 100km long and 30km wide at the junction of Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia and Lower Saxony. Although the scenery here is a far cry from the dramatic peaks and valleys of the Alps, the Harz region is a great year-round sports getaway, with plenty of opportunities for hiking, cycling and skiing (downhill and nordic) in and around the pretty Harz National Park. The regular influx of visitors in all seasons is testament to the enduring appeal of the Harz; historically, too, its status as a prime national holiday destination has never been questioned. From 1952 until reunification, the region was divided between West and East Germany, effectively becoming an uneasy political holiday camp straddling the Iron Curtain. The Brocken (1142m) is the focal point, and has had more than its fair share of illustri- ous visitors: the great Goethe was frequently seen striding the local trails and set ‘Walpur- gisnacht’, an early chapter of Faust, on the mountain, while satirical poet Heinrich Heine spent a well-oiled night here, as described in Harzreise (Harz Journey; 1824). Elsewhere the charming medieval towns of Wernigerode and Quedlinburg pull the crowds, while equally venerable steam trains pull them along between the mountain villages, spas and sports resorts that litter the region.     Very low-grade regional metamorphism in Devonian metabasalts of the Elbingerode Complex, Harz Mountains, Germany – implications of chlorite and phengite composition Friedel, Carl-Heinz1 1Landesamt fur¨ Geologie und Bergwesen Sachsen-Anhalt, Postfach 156, D-06035 Halle/S. The Devonian metabasalts of the Elbingerode Complex (EC) in the Harz Mountains (central Rhenohercynian belt) were affected by Variscan very low-grade (upper anchizone) regional metamorphism. In the metabasalts a non-diagnostic metamorphic mineral assemblage occur, consisting of chlorite-phengite-albite ± calcite, sphene (titanite), quartz, while Ca-silicate index minerals are missing and probably suppressed by CO2bearing fluids. Because of the lack of index minerals, the estimated P-T conditions of regional metamorphism in the EC are essentially based on the composition of Al-rich chlorite and Si-rich K white mica (phengite). Both Fe-Mg phyllosilicates reveal a significant composi- tional spread controlled by the bulk rock chemistry. Nevertheless, chemical equilibrium is suggested by the regular partitioning of iron and magnesium between coexisting chlorite and white mica. The P-T conditions were deduced from several methods including empirical and thermodynamic approaches of chlorite geothermometry, phengite geo- barometry and the results of multi-equlibrium P-T calculations for the chlorite-phengite-quartz-H2O assemblage. This multi-methodological approach yields peak metamorphic conditions of 5 kbar ± 1 kbar at 280 ◦C ± 20◦C (Friedel 2008). The P-T estimates are proved by P-T data obtained from pelitic rocks (illite crystallinity, coal rank, b0 pa- rameter). The estimated P-T conditions indicate a medium-pressure style of metamorphism commonly thought to be restricted to the Northern Phyllite Zone at the southeastern boundary of the Rhenohercynian belt.

Unsere Karte zeigt den Verlauf des beschriebenen Teilabschnitts des insgesamt 550 km langen Geschichts- pfades „Wege Deutscher Kaiser und Könige des Mittelalters im Harz“. Wir haben den Namen in Anführungszeichen gesetzt, weil die von den Harz klub- zweigvereinen ausgeschilderte Wander- route nicht überall dem ursprünglichen Verlauf der mittelalterlichen Wege folgt. Spurensuche Wege Deutscher Kaiser und Könige des Mittelalters im Harz Phantasie sollte haben, wer sich heutzutage auf die „Wege Deutscher Kaiser und Könige des Mittelalters im Harz“ begibt. Central Europe was affected by a compressional tectonic event in the Late Cretaceous, caused by the convergence of Iberia and Europe. Basement uplifts, inverted graben structures and newly formed marginal troughs are the main 10 expressions of crustal shortening. Although the maximum activity occurred in a short period between 90 and 75 Ma, the exact timing of this event is still unclear. Dating of start and end of basin inversion is very different depending on the applied method. On the basis of borehole data, facies and thickness maps, the timing of basin re-organisation was reconstructed for several basins in Central Europe. The obtained data point to a synchronous start of basin inversion already at 95 Ma (Cenomanian), 5 Million years earlier than commonly assumed. The end of the Late Cretaceous compressional event is more 15 difficult to pinpoint, because regional uplift and salt migration disturb the signal of shifting marginal troughs. Unconformities of Late Campanian to Paleogene age on inverted structures indicate slowly declining uplift rates. 1.
