With its unique emphasis on both global missions and pedagogy, the Society of Jesus was in an ideal position to both generate and disseminate knowledge about the world. As missionaries scattered across the globe constructed the identity of the ethnic and cultural Other encountered on mission in the East and in Latin America, Jesuit missionaries and scholars, both at home and abroad, likewise attempted to construct a global Catholic identity, merging the realities of Catholicism in a post-Reformation Europe with the possibilities of the global mission. In this way, although the Catholic communities established throughout the Jesuit global mission geographically spanned oceans, they were conceptually ever present. This study will analyze texts produced on early modern Jesuit missions in England, Japan and Paraguay as well as works retrospectively considering these missions, such as the Latin musical drama Mulier fortis, in order to better understand the ideological, political and rhetorical strategies of early modern Jesuit missionaries and scholars as they conceptualized the cultural complexities of the world around them and attempted to cull out a universal global Catholic identity from such vast diversity. © 2015 by Ann Louise Cole All Rights Reserved Acknowledgments I would like to begin by offering my sincerest thanks to Dr. Luis Restrepo in guiding my academic and intellectual development while studying here at the University of Arkansas. I would also like to thank Dr. Stephens who as my professor during my first years as a graduate student helped me think outside the literary box by requiring us to read works I would not have previously considered as “literature,” such as the guide to Renaissance huswifery. While it was useful, in that before reading it I had no idea there was such a thing as dragon water, it also opened my eyes to the marvelous cultural treasures texts, literary and otherwise, can teach us, and my diverse choice of texts within this dissertation reflects that lesson. I would also like to thank Dr. Markham for agreeing to serve on my dissertation committee and offer me advice about a discipline I was formerly only familiar with from having participated in choirs most of my life. Although we are not well acquainted, she is in many ways responsible for the subject of this dissertation since it is only because of the presentation given at U of A about Mulier fortis that I even know of the work’s existence. I walked out of that presentation with a burning curiosity to know more about the Jesuits and their global missions and this dissertation, and any subsequent research I might do on the topic in the future, is the result. There is absolutely no way I could have read or translated Mulier fortis without the help of two very generous Latin scholars, Garrett Jeter and Mark Reynolds. I would also like to thank my family. Thank you to my wonderful husband who was willing to play with our three-year-old in the snow, take her on day trips so I could get work done, and endure her screams when she was sure no one would do but mommy. I also want to express my deepest thanks to my mom who likewise has done a lot of babysitting and been a shoulder to cry on when I’ve felt overwhelmed. I would also like to say thank you to my academically (and in almost every other way) more talented brother, E.J., who has been wonderful at offering affirmation and helping guide me through the unique challenges and opportunites of academia. Finally, I want to say thank you to my dear daughter, Carmen. In many ways, she has had a contradictory effect on the writing of this dissertation since as a baby she demanded so much of my time and energy the writing and research slowed down to a crawl, but as she has grown she has made me want to speed up the process so that I don’t have to take time away from her. To her, the completion of mommy’s dissertation means we’ll have more time to play, and we’ll be able to go swimming and take trips to the zoo, all of which I look forward to immensely! Dedication I dedicate this dissertation to my family. In the course of writing this dissertation, the dynamic of my family changed dramatically. I lost my father to cancer and then gave birth to a precious little girl. Both events were profound moments in my life and definitely affected my sense of self and priorities. As I read chapters of this dissertation, I am reminded how they relate to the specific moment in which they were written and while some parts echo joy and others pain, I am grateful for the remembrance nonetheless. I dedicate this dissertation, first of all, to my parents, Eldon and Sandra Coffman. I believe that if my dad were still alive, he would be proud of my accomplishment; in those moments when I thought I would never finish this project, I would remember his favorite saying, “The impossible takes just a little bit longer,” and just keep on. I would also like to dedicate this work to my mom who truly is the mulier fortis in my life. I have always admired her as a wonderful mother and now admire her even more as I am in awe of how masterfully she juggled competing demands throughout my childhood.     Saint of the Day December December 1: St. Edmund Campion, Martyr St. Edmund Campion was born in 1540 in Protestant London. An exceptionally bright child, he was given a good education. He went to Oxford in 1557, during the last year of Catholic Queen Mary’s reign. In 1566, he was given the honor of leading a debate in front of Queen Elizabeth I, who was impressed by him. He became a deacon in Church of England, but soon regretted it. He left England to enter a Catholic seminary in France and became a Jesuit in 1573. He knew then that he desired to return to England and secretly minister to Catholics there, despite the dangers. In 1580, St. Edmund went back to England disguised as a jewel merchant. He secretly preached and said Masses for one year before he was arrested, imprisoned and martyred in 1581. St. Edmund is one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales. December 2: St. Bibiana, Virgin and Martyr St. Bibiana was an early Christian martyr, probably living during the late 4th century in Rome. Christianity had been made legal by Constantine, but persecutions continued. Bibiana’s parents were martyred, leaving Bibiana and her sister Demetria alone in poverty. They fasted and prayed, refusing to give up their faith. Demetria died of hunger and Bibiana, after undergoing harsh questioning, died a few days later. Their home was turned into a church, and is now the site of the Basilica of Santa Bibiana. December 3: St. Francis Xavier St. Francis Xavier was born in Spain in 1506.

Abstract Early modern English Catholic eschatology, the belief that the present was the last age and an associated concern with mankind’s destiny, has been overlooked in the historiography. Historians have established that early modern Protestants had an eschatological understanding of the present. This thesis seeks to balance the picture and the sources indicate that there was an early modern English Catholic counter narrative. This thesis suggests that the Catholic eschatological understanding of contemporary events affected political action. It investigates early modern English Catholic eschatology in the context of proscription and persecution of Catholicism between 1558 and 1603.

It is most easily identifiable by the spine on the posterior of the carpus on the fifth leg which bears its chela, or claws giving it one of its common names: spiny hands. Its dorsal carapace is naked and its anterolateral margin has 6 prominent black-tipped teeth.

    The Jesuit Mission and Jihi no Kumi (Confraria de Misericórdia) Takashi GONOI Professor Emeritus, University of Tokyo Introduction During the 80-year period starting when the Jesuit missionary Francis Xavier and his party arrived in Kagoshima in August of 1549 and propagated their Christian teachings until the early 1630s, it is estimated that a total of 760,000 Japanese converted to Chris- tianity. Followers of Christianity were called “kirishitan” in Japanese from the Portu- guese christão. As of January 1614, when the Tokugawa shogunate enacted its prohibi- tion of the religion, kirishitan are estimated to have been 370,000. This corresponds to 2.2% of the estimated population of 17 million of the time (the number of Christians in Japan today is estimated at around 1.1 million with Roman Catholics and Protestants combined, amounting to 0.9% of total population of 127 million). In November 1614, 99 missionaries were expelled from Japan. This was about two-thirds of the total number in the country. The 45 missionaries who stayed behind in hiding engaged in religious in- struction of the remaining kirishitan. The small number of missionaries was assisted by brotherhoods and sodalities, which acted in the missionaries’ place to provide care and guidance to the various kirishitan communities in different parts of Japan. During the two and a half centuries of harsh prohibition of Christianity, the confraria (“brother- hood”, translated as “kumi” in Japanese) played a major role in maintaining the faith of the hidden kirishitan. An overview of the state of the kirishitan faith in premodern Japan will be given in terms of the process of formation of that faith, its actual condition, and the activities of the confraria.

    Did You Know? By *Marjorie Charlot Black presence in the military and in wars can be traced to various periods of the ancient world and across cultures. Jugurtha was a North African patriot who initiated the Jugurthine War (112–105 B.C.). His guerrilla warfare would inflict embarrassing defeat upon the Roman legions. Authors Brunson and Rashidi quote Graham Webster when he wrote, “The wars of Jugurtha demonstrated the value of the nimble Moorish horsemen who Trajan later found so useful against the Dacians.”1 Black Conquistadors Juan Bardales was a free black slave who participated in the conquests of Honduras and Panama. For the part he played in the conquest of Honduras, he received an award consisting of an annual subsidy of 50 pesos.2 Nuflo de Olano was a slave conquistador and explorer. He was part of the Vasco Núñez de Balboa expedition, along with 30 other Africans, 190 Spaniards, and 1,000 Native Americans when they went through the jungle to cross the Isthmus of Panama. De Olano in 1513 was with Balboa when they first saw the Pacific Ocean.3 Antonio Pérez was a free North African who was a cavalryman and one of Diego de Losada’s most valued captains in 1568. Pérez took part in the conquest of Venezuela.4 He was described as “an old soldier of African wars who had been with the emperor at the storming of Tunis.”5 Juan Portugués was either black African or black Portuguese. He was involved in the conquest of Venezuela.6 Miguel Ruíz was a free Spanish mulatto who was a conquistador in Peru and one of two blacks in Francisco Pizarro’s company at Cajamarca.

    Ortelius’s Typus Orbis Terrarum (1570) by Giorgio Mangani (Ancona, Italy) Paper presented at the 18th International Conference for the History of Cartography (Athens, 11-16th July 1999), in the "Theory Session", with Lucia Nuti (University of Pisa), Peter van der Krogt (University of Uthercht), Kess Zandvliet (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam), presided by Dennis Reinhartz (University of Texas at Arlington). I tried to examine this map according to my recent studies dedicated to Abraham Ortelius,1 trying to verify the deep meaning that it could have in his work of geographer and intellectual, committed in a rather wide religious and political programme. Ortelius was considered, in the scientific and intellectual background of the XVIth century Low Countries, as a model of great morals in fact, he was one of the most famous personalities of Northern Europe; he was a scholar, a collector, a mystic, a publisher, a maps and books dealer and he was endowed with a particular charisma, which seems to have influenced the work of one of the best artist of the time, Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Dealing with the deep meaning of Ortelius’ atlas, I tried some other time to prove that the Theatrum, beyond its function of geographical documentation and succesfull publishing product, aimed at a political and theological project which Ortelius shared with the background of the Familist clandestine sect of Antwerp (the Family of Love). In short, the fundamentals of the familist thought focused on three main points: a) an accentuated sensibility towards a mysticism close to the so called devotio moderna, that is to say an inner spirituality searching for a direct relation with God.
