The above men ought to ha ve been present at this Court Baron . They ar e fined the sums of money wr itten over their respective names . No doubt IVilli a m a t the S tone is an anc estor of the S tone family and s w m ho s the derivation of the name . There is no re arkable stone in Ard leigh from which the name could be taken . Probably it would be some s tone laid down as a landmark . Th e Radleys here mentioned were an old fa mily in Ardleigh wh o have m given their na e to Badley Hall .

From this we learn that John Stone of that date wa s both a Weaver

nd . N wm wa s 6d w h w a a poacher John e an fined . but e are not told o much John S tone had to pay .

Here we have the regular formula quoted some hund reds of times in w ne w w w a s m wn these Court Rolls , by hich a o ner ad itted to the o ership n m w m n of a y land or tene ent ithin the do ai of the Lord of the M anor . He fi wa s required to come to the Court and pay a ne and do fealty . The Lord — — - o r m w h im w a it w ore often his ste ard touched ith a rod , l tle t ig , and n w thus invested h im with the right to o w land within the domain . No W 1 488— we — di d i if alter S tone , in as have seen fealty for th s land Ba r o ns wa s m W called and ad itted tenant , it is eviden t tha t this alter — 1 524 wa s i Va lte r so n hi s .
