Bury,Russell Meiggs | 600 pages | 01 Jul 2000 | Palgrave MacMillan | 9780333154939 | English | United Kingdom What Is Tsiknopempti in Greece? For meat-lovers, there's no better day to be in Greece than during the celebration of Tsiknopempti. The holiday is a part of the Greek Carnival celebrations aka Greek Mardi Gras and signals the start of the last weekend that observant Greek Orthodox Church members are permitted to eat meat before fasting A History of Greece Lent. In it takes place on February A History of Greece which follows the tradition of occurring 11 days before the start of A History of Greece Orthodox Lent, Clean Monday. It is pronounced Tsik-no-pem-ptee, with the "p" softly sounded, nearly like a "b" or even a "v. It's a popular day for going out to eat and enjoying as many different meats as possible. As a joke, it is sometimes called the "Feast of the Carnivores. This is definitely not the day for sensitive vegetarians to visit the " restaurant rows " of Greece. They say that Greeks try to consume enough meat on this day to carry them through the entire 40 days of Lent. So there's plenty of A History of Greece air, redolent of the aromas of cooking meat, everywhere. This is one of the few times of the year it's a good idea to make a reservation, even at the most casual taverna, as families come out in force to consume vast quantities of grilled meats and every restaurant will be packed. If you are a vegetarian or vegan planning your Greek vacationwhy not put it off a few weeks and plan A History of Greece travel during Lent? Almost all the tavernas, cafes and restaurants will be adding particularly appealing vegetarian dishes to their already veggie-rich cuisine for the month of abstinence. Some hotels and virtually every taverna will put on special menus for Tsiknopempti. By far, the most common item will be some variation of souvlakimeat on a stick. These will be available everywhere along the streets in the taverna areas; be sure to walk carefully to avoid banging into an unexpected grill in the already narrow streets and walkways. Souvlaki skewers in the hands of the inexperienced can also be causes of mild injury. Since eating is the main activity in Athens on Tsiknopempti, it can actually be a good time to visit the museums and monuments, which will be quiet even by the standards of the off-season, especially later in the day. You don't have to travel A History of Greece far from home to join in on the meat fest! Greek communities around the world celebrate Tsiknopempti, and Greek Orthodox church groups may arrange special events. Greek restaurants catering to local Greeks will A History of Greece add specials for the day or weekend. Tripsavvy uses cookies to provide you with a great user experience. After slaying a snake or she-dragon known as Pytho here, Apollo took the local name of Apollo Pythios. For a thousand years, pilgrims flocked to his sanctuary for guidance. The height of its fame came between the 6th and A History of Greece centuries BC, after the Amphictyonic League, a federation of 12 tribal states, took control of the sanctuary following the First Sacred War — BC. As A History of Greece autonomous state, Delphi earned great prosperity from benefactors including the kings of Lydia and Egypt, and the A History of Greece emperor Hadrian. Nominally neutral, it was a locus of political power. Ultimately its influence waned with the spread of Christianity, and the sanctuary was abolished by the Byzantine emperor Theodosius in the late 4th century AD. By the 7th century, a new village, Kastri, had taken over the ancient site. It remained atop the ruins until late in the 19th century, when its inhabitants were paid to relocate to the newly constructed village of Delphi, allowing archaeologists to unearth the ancient site. HOLY APOSTLES ORTHODOX CHURCH Currently meeting in Twin Chimneys Office Park 10760 Baltimore Avenue, Beltsville, Maryland 20705 Archpriest George Johnson, Rector; [email protected] Ph: 301-931-3400, church, 301-572-5738, rectory www.holyapostlesorthodoxchurch.org OUR FUTURE CHURCH HOME MARCH 2011 PARISH BULLETIN THOUGHTS AT THE THRESHOLD OF THE HOLY FAST OF GREAT LENT Money! Power! Honor! These are the temptations that, unfortunately, many people are unable to resist. This is the source of all the disputes, disagreements and divisions among Christians. This is the root of people's forgetting the "one thing needful" which is proposed to us by the true Christian faith and which consists of prayer, acts of repentance, and sincere, un-hypocritical charity to our neighbors. The Holy Church always calls us to this, but especially now, during the Great Fast! What is required of us Christians is not some kind of "exalted politics," not lofty phrases and hazy philosophy, but the most humble prayer of the Publican: "God, be merciful to me, a sinner!", acts of repentance, and doing good to our neighbors, which proceeds from a pure heart. It is for the practice of all of this that the Church has established Great Lent! How powerfully, colorfully, graphically, and convincingly, with what ardent inspiration is all of this spoken of in the divine services of Great Lent! No one anywhere has such a wealth of edification in this regard as do we Orthodox in our incomparable Lenten services, which, to their shame, the majority of Orthodox in our times do not know at all.

To date, research has focussed on perceptions of authenticity in consumers’ patronage of businesses, brands, places and experiences. However, this research takes a “producer” perspective by examining the meaning and construction of authenticity by commercial enterprises, through a qualitative, interpretive examination of restaurants serving mainly Greek food in both the UK and Greece. Restaurateurs (n=11 in the UK and 8 in Greece) were theoretically sampled. Data from in- depth interviews was analysed according to constructivist grounded theory conventions. The results indicated that the core concept linking the restaurateurs was “hospitality”. This was variously achieved by hiring staff of the same ethnicity with the restaurant’s theme, developing a menu, sourcing ingredients and creating an ambiance that reflected the authenticity bias of the restaurateur, which was either indexically or existentially oriented. The strategic implications are discussed. Keywords Authenticity, identity, food, ethnic, restaurants, promotion. 1 Introduction The term authenticity derives from the ancient Greek word “αυθεντικός” meaning something trustworthy and original, not an imitation or imaginary (Cappannelli, 2004).
