Sandgrouse31-090402:Sandgrouse 4/2/2009 11:21 AM Page 18 On the status and distribution of Thrush Nightingale Luscinia luscinia and Common Nightingale L. megarhynchos in Armenia VASIL ANANIAN INTRODUCTION In the key references on the avifauna of the Western Palearctic and former Soviet Union, the breeding distributions of Common Luscinia megarhynchos and Thrush Nightingales L. luscinia in the Transcaucasus (Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan) are presented inconsistently, especially for the latter species. These sources disagree on the status of Thrush Nightingale in the area, thus Vaurie (1959), Cramp (1988) and Snow & Perrins (1998) considered it breeding in the Transcaucasus, while Dementiev & Gladkov (1954), Sibley & Monroe (1990) and Stepanyan (2003) do not. Its distribu- tion in del Hoyo et al (2005) is mapped according to the latter view, but they note the species’ presence in Armenia during the breeding season. Several other publications Plate 1. Thrush Nightingale in Azerbaijan was classified as ‘accidental’ by Patrikeev (2004). The author accepted that the species had possibly nested in the past and referred to old summer records by GI Radde from the Karayasi forest in the Kura–Aras (Arax) lowlands, but Patrikeev found only Common Nightingale there in the late 1980s. -

Chapter 3 Ground Survey Chapter 3 Ground Survey 3.1 Drilling, Laboratory Tests The outline of the lithologic structure in Yerevan can be understood by the geological maps and the collected drilling database, which contains 5,094 logs; however, the data concerning the S wave velocity for the amplification analysis and the soil properties for the liquefaction analysis are not enough. To collect these data, 10 drillings were newly conducted in Yerevan and several tests were conducted using these boreholes. The quantities of the tests are shown in Table 3.1-1. The geologic condition of Yerevan was estimated as follows from the existing information. The rock layer may be shallow in the northern area and the soft soils cover the southern area. Therefore, the selected newly boring points locate in the south of Yerevan city (Figure 3.1-1). The surface soils of each drilling points are shown in Table 3.1-1. The drilling logs are shown in Data Book. Yerevan is fully aware of these challenges, as the administrative as well as economic centre of Armenia, the overall economic prosperity of the country is substantially anchored on Yerevan’s economic development The quality of the urban environment, including air, water, soil, biodiversity, environmental assets and ecosystems are negatively impacted by human activities such as transport, energy, water use and waste management. In the recent years, many measures have already been taken to remedy the situation, but the measures should be doubled in the coming years to raise the quality of life in the City to standards seen in many European cities. These efforts will also help Yerevan contribute to global efforts in climate change mitigation and the transition to green economy. Methodology The Green City Action Plan (GCAP) was developed by applying 4 stage methodology, which is as follows: Stage 1 focused on relevant information and data identification, collection, processing and analysis to establish the baseline indicators, which rank the city compared to internationally recognized benchmarks. -

A cultural showcase not to be missed is Matenadaran, one of the world’s largest and oldest repositories of Armenian manuscripts. Later we’ll visit the most impressive museum of Armenia – Sergey Parajanov house museum, one of the greatest figures of 20th-century world cinema. Overnight in Yerevan. Day 2: Yerevan Temples- Garni-Pagan-Geghard- First heading to Garni Pagan Temple, The Pagan Temple of Garni is the only pagan temple currently standing in Armenia. Gracing the hillside the pagan temple was dedicated to the God of Sun, Mithra. Proceed to Geghard Monastery carved out of a huge monolithic rock. Geghard is an incredible ancient Armenian monastery, partly carved out of a mountain. The architectural forms and the decoration of Gerhard’s rock premises show that Armenian builders could not only create super works of architecture out of stone, but also hew them in solid rock. -

Chapter 6 Risk Assessment Chapter 6 Risk Assessment 6.1 Damage of Buildings The building damage functions for multi-story residential buildings, for low-rise individual houses and for schools and hospitals are made mainly based on the damage by Spitak earthquake in 1988. Therefore, the seismic resistance of the buildings in 1988 is considered tacitly in creating the damage function; however, already over 20 years has passed from 1988. Most building in Yerevan has been constructed before 1991 and the aging effect to the seismic resistance of the buildings is a matter of concern. Also the maintenance of the residential buildings after 1991 is said to became poor than before. The effects of these issues are necessary to be included for realistic risk assessment. The quantitative effects are evaluated by expert judgment in discussing with Armenian researchers and concluded that the damage ratio is increased 10% for aging effect and 10% for poor maintenance issue. As a result, the damage functions in Figures 5.3-17, 5.3-19 and 5.3-20 are multiplied by 1.2 to calculate the damage of buildings. 6.1.1 Multi-story residential buildings Number of heavily damaged multi-story residential buildings per grid of 250m x 250m against two scenario earthquakes is shown in Figure 6.1-1. 6.1.2 Individual house Number of heavily damaged individual houses per grid of 250m x 250m is shown in Figure 6.1-2. 6.1.3 Summary of damage of buildings 1) Damages of multi-story buildings and individual houses at each district are summarized in Table 6.1-1. -

The article presents the results of a detailed comparative floristic analysis of the floras of wet- lands of the main river basins of Armenia. The taxonomic structure of the floras of individual basins and the ratio of life forms are considered, as well as a detailed chorological analysis is carried out. It is shown that, in general, the flora of the wetlands of Armenian river basins is mainly Holarctic, Circumboreal. The base of it constitute species are widely distributed in the north of Eurasia in the Postglacial period. A very large influence on the development of this flora had Ancient Mediterranean species survived the Ice Age in the more southern regions, in the Ancient Mediterranean. These species by their bio-ecological characteristics belong to hydro- and hygrophilous groups which are growing in wetlands in arid regions of the Earth. As for the features of the floras of separate river basins, they reflect the correct distribution of the territory of Armenia between Caucasian and Armeno-Iranian floristic province (between Circumboreal and Ancient Mediterranean subkingdoms of Holarctic floristic kingdom. Te objective of this research is to assess the distribution of heavy metals in the waters and sediments of the Voghji River and its tributaries impacted by mining activity and to reveal the real source of each of the heavy metals in the environment for assessing the pollution level of heavy metals. Voghji River with two main tributaries (Geghi and Norashenik) drain two mining regions. To identify distribution and pollution sources of heavy metals, the water and sediment samples were collected from eight sampling sites. Te results of statistical analysis based on data sets of the period 2014–2016 showed that, afer the infuence of drainage water and wastewater of mining regions, heavy metal contents in the Voghji River basin dramatically increased. Te waters of the Voghji River were highly polluted by Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, Mo, Cd, and Pb. -
