1 JERUSALEM: CITY OF DREAMS, CITY OF SORROWS More than ever before, urban historians tell us that global cities tend to look very much alike. For U.S. students. the“ look alike” perspective makes it more difficult to empathize with and to understand cultures and societies other than their own. The admittedly superficial similarities of global cities with U.S. ones leads to misunderstandings and confusion. The multiplicity of cybercafés, high-rise buildings, bars and discothèques, international hotels, restaurants, and boutique retailers in shopping malls and multiplex cinemas gives these global cities the appearances of familiarity. The ubiquity of schools, university campuses, signs, streetlights, and urban transportation systems can only add to an outsider’s “cultural and social blindness.” Prevailing U.S. learning goals that underscore American values of individualism, self-confidence, and material comfort are, more often than not, obstacles for any quick study or understanding of world cultures and societies by visiting U.S. student and faculty.1 Therefore, international educators need to look for and find ways in which their students are able to look beyond the veneer of the modern global city through careful program planning and learning strategies that seek to affect the students in their “reading and learning” about these fertile centers of liberal learning. As the students become acquainted with the streets, neighborhoods, and urban centers of their global city, their understanding of its ways and habits is embellished and enriched by the walls, neighborhoods, institutions, and archaeological sites that might otherwise cause them their “cultural and social blindness.” Jerusalem is more than an intriguing global historical city. -

How much midnight oil did I burn with you, reading and writing, in the silence of the night while the people slept … farewell, my books! … I do not know what became of you after we left: were you looted? Burned? Were you transferred, with due respect, to a public or private library? Did you find your way to the grocer, your pages wrapping onions?1 When Khalil al-Sakakini, a renowned educator and Christian Arab author, fled his home in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Katamon, on 30th April 1948, one day after the occupation of the neighborhood by the Hagana forces, he left behind not only his house and furniture, his huge piano, electric refrigerator, liquor cupboard and narghila, but also his books. Like others, he believed he would soon return home. Nineteen years later, in the summer of 1967, Sakakini's daughter visited The Jewish National and University Library with her sister, and discovered there her father's books with the notes he used to inscribe on them. -

Jerusalem is neither holy nor ordinary city. It is difficult to understand how such a contested space, where different legitimizations and narratives are continuously involved and at odds with each other, might be rhetorically assumed as a symbol of peace and coexistence. To all visitors coming first to the city it is clearly visible that Jerusalem is neither heaven on earth nor any especially spiritual place, where all of a sudden human historical or philosophical dilemma will set at rest and find an answer. On the contrary, most probably visitors might walk out of the city more confused and wretched than they stepped in. Exploring the Old City and all its monumental alleys, full of history and diverging memories, foreigners, tourists or whatever the goal of the journey, will come up with the feeling that human beings are complex creatures, difficult to understand in-depth, while even more difficult is to grasp the hidden and ideal motivations of their actions. Swanson: The Politics of Home in Jerusalem: Partitions, Parks, and Planning Futures (Under the direction of Banu Gökarıksel) At a time when Palestine and Palestinians are ubiquitously framed through the “Israeli- Palestinian conflict” and the “peace process”, the spaces of everyday life for Palestinians are often ignored. This is in spite of the fact that so many of the Israeli policies and technologies of occupation and settlement are experienced materially by Palestinians in these spaces. In this dissertation, then, drawing on feminist geopolitics, I consider everyday Palestinian spaces like the home, neighborhood, and village—with a focus on Jerusalem—to better understand geographies of occupation and settlement in Palestine/Israel today. I argue, through attention to Palestinian experiences on the ground, that widespread representations of Jerusalem as either a “united” or “divided” city fail to capture the Palestinian experience, which is actually one of fragmentation, both physical and social. As a case study in fragmentation, I turn to the zoning of Israeli national parks in and between Palestinian neighborhoods, arguing that parks have served the purposes of settlement in less politicized ways than West Bank settlement blocs, but like the settlement blocs, have resulted in dispossession and restrictions on Palestinian construction, expansion, and movement. -

UNITED NATIONS Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs occupied Palestinian territory SETTLEMENTS IN PALESTINIAN RESIDENTIAL AREAS IN EAST JERUSALEM APRIL 2012 KEY FACTS � Nearly 200,000 Israeli settlers reside in settlements established in occupied East Jerusalem, which has been unlawfully annexed to Israel; 35% of the annexed areas were expropriated and allocated to settlements. � About 2,000 settlers live in the heart of Palestinian neighborhoods, in houses which have been taken over by various means, including the application of the Absentee Property Law and the processing in Israeli courts of claims over properties allegedly owned by Jews prior to 1948, among others. � Such settlements are concentrated in the so-called ‘Holy Basin’ area – comprising the Muslim and Christian quarters of the Old City, Silwan, Sheikh Jarrah, At-Tur (Mount of Olives), Wadi Joz, Ras al-‘Amud, and Jabal Al Mukabbir. � Beit Hanina, a Palestinian suburb in the northern part of East Jerusalem, has most recently become the target for such settlement activities, which include a plan to build around 60 new housing units for settlers (Peace Now). � In April 2012, two Palestinian refugee families (comprising 13 people) were forcibly evicted by the Israeli authorities from their houses in Beit Hanina, following a court case brought by an Israeli citizen, supported by a settler association, claiming ownership over the property. The houses were subsequently handed over to settlers. � In Sheikh Jarrah, nine Palestinian families were evicted in 2008-9 and their homes handed over to settlers. Another 500 residents are at risk of forced eviction and displacement for the same reason. -

It is, in part, about the human suffering that exists under Israeli occupation. It is about the legitimacy of powerful narratives, despite inaccuracies and contradictions. It is about the resilience and tenacity of various communities on either side of a complex conflict. But primarily, this is a paper about borders: both physical and intangible boundaries that divide and define various communities in Jerusalem. Boundaries reveal a society through their construction, destruction, and definition of space. Because borders are demonstrated through anecdote, I examine boundaries largely through ethnography, exploring four specific types of boundaries and spaces: physical-political boundaries, boundaries based on cultural identity, gendered spaces, and heterotopias. -
The Husayni Neighborhood in Jerusalem: Space of Self-Invention Figure 1
Shaykh Jarrah and its architecture symbolize The Husayni a space of aspiration. Walking its streets and Neighborhood in observing its buildings and gardens, one experiences a distinctly modern Palestinian Jerusalem story of Jerusalem. As an architect, I am especially interested in the relationship Space of Self-Invention between material-spatial culture and oral Mahdi Sabbagh history. This article attempts to articulate the relationship between human experience and architecture using the Saʽid al-Husayni house as a case study. The house, and importantly its garden, constitutes an understudied piece of Palestinian urban cultural heritage. The study of such moments is urgent given the deliberate erosion of Jerusalem’s Palestinian character. Here, architecture and storytelling serve as two languages that can testify to a cultural identity that has been systematically and gradually removed from the dominant narrative of the city of Jerusalem. The Neighborhood Shaykh Jarrah, a Palestinian neighborhood of Jerusalem north of the Old City walls, was named after the tomb of Husam al-Din al- Jarrahi, a thirteenth-century emir and Salah al-Din’s surgeon (figure 1). It is in keeping with the trend in Jerusalem, as elsewhere, to name places and areas after deceased people of significance. And yet, unlike other parts of Jerusalem that are marked by traditions and death, Shaykh Jarrah is experienced as a neighborhood of beginnings and invention, known today for its historically affluent residents, cafés, and international consulates.
