Our programs belong to the Holyoke JUNTOS Adult Basic EducationCollaborative, a group of organizations offering adult basic education opportunities to residents of Holyokethrough funding from the Massachusetts Department of Education. Ourprograms, as well as each of us as individuals, have benefitted from the work of the Massachusetts NativeLanguage Literacy Network, which is a group of programs and individuals committed to qualitynative language basic education instruction to non-Englishspeaking adults across Massachusetts. This booklet is the result of several months of meetingsamong the four of us as part of the JUNTOS Collaborative's 1999 Curriculum Frameworks project, also sponsoredby the MDOE. During our meetings we discussed approaches to teaching reading and writing in Spanish, using the English Language Arts curriculum framework as a base and reference point, and both collectedand wrote sample lesson plans that we hope can be useful as guides for ourselves andother teachers of basic literacy in Spanish. Along with these plans, the booklet includessome of our general thinking about approaches to Spanish literacy work inHolyoke.
