Arab Feminism and the Negotiation of Gender in Contemporary Jordanian Novels Arab Feminism and the Negotiation of Gender in Contemporary Jordanian Novels Amani Al-Serhan PhD University of York Women’s Studies January 2016 ABSTRACT Since 2000, Jordanian literature has witnessed a rise in the number of novels that address women’s daily struggles with gender discrimination, marking a shift away from literary texts that overtly focus on Palestine. Yet, despite the rise in Jordanian feminist novels, there has been little cross-fertilisation between literary criticism and the perspectives of Arab women’s movements. This thesis attempts to bring these fields together. My main aim is to use the lens of Arab feminism to investigate how perceptions of womanhood and manhood are negotiated in Jordanian novels (2000– 2012) written by both women and men. I argue that the political debate about how tradition and modernity can advance women’s status in the Arab world influences the ways in which these novelists shape and re/frame notions of womanhood and manhood. I identify three categories of novels, based on the authors’ strategies for conceptualising and overcoming gender inequality. The first advocates a rebellious stance against patriarchal structures, deploying notions of sexuality, escape or suicide as available solutions. The second calls for a return to tradition, and in particular to Islamic Holy Scriptures as texts that endow women with great value and status, viewing this as an alternative to imitating or adopting forms of western feminism. The final group emphasises the need to dissociate from perceiving tradition as the antithesis of modernity. They attempt to bring together useful aspects of both paradigms in ways that help women combat gender inequality. Thus, through their various techniques, these novels offer insightful depictions of women’s and men’s everyday struggles and promote ideas about gender and feminism in ways that are beneficial for women. No part of the thesis is published anywhere else. 8 Chapter One: Introduction Following four years of vigorous searching for scholarships in Jordan and abroad, this project was eventually born. I had been granted the opportunity of a lifetime: a post as teaching assistant at the Centre for Women’s Studies at the University of Jordan. This meant that I could pursue my PhD at any respectable higher education institution abroad, a dream I had long harboured. With excitement, I began my search for a high-ranking British university with an independent centre for women’s studies. As a member of the Centre for Women’s Studies in Jordan, consisting of three academics who specialise in women in law, sociology and anthropology, I set out to explore a different field, and one I regard as immensely significant – literature. However, my choice stems not only from personal interest and from my previous academic background, it is part of the centre’s policy, which aims to appoint academics from different fields of knowledge. The goal of having diversity in academic disciplines with a special interest in women is part of the centre’s integral vision, which cuts across various academic fields. For myself, I have always been fascinated by the ability of literature to present and critique certain aspects of life in an innovative style. It is unfortunate that, despite literature’s significance in tackling a wide array of themes pertaining to women, it is not given great attention in Jordan. Nonetheless, I was determined to explore how literature is deployed in the debate about women by investigating contemporary Jordanian novels. Growing up in Jordan, I was always attentive to the social bias against women. From a young age, I would particularly notice the differential treatment of boys and girls. The males are endowed

    Chapter One Towards a Feminist Reading The advent of feminism as a global and revolutionary ideology has brought into the field of literary criticism new critical outlooks and modes of exegesis. The practice of reading of any literary text has become a site in the struggle for change in gender relations that prevail in society. A reading that is feminist aims at asking such rudimentary questions: how the text defines sexual questions, what it says about gender relations and how it represents women. In other words, feminist reading/criticism has come to be recognized as a political discourse: a critical and theoretical practice committed to the struggle against patriarchy and sexism. The influential feminist critic, Elaine Showalter points out that two factors - gender and politics- which are suppressed in the dominant models of reading gain prominence with the advent of a feminist perspective. In every area of critical reflection whether it is literary representations of sexual difference or the molding/shaping of literary genres by masculine values feminist criticism has established gender as a fundamental category of literary analysis. With ,gender as a tool of literary interpretation the issue of silencing of the female voice in the institutions of literature, criticism and theory has also come to the forefront. Appreciating the widespread importance of gender, feminist philosophers resist speaking in gender-neutral voice. They value women's experiences, interest, and seek to shift the position of women from object to one of subject and agent. 1 Moreover, it has been an important function of feminist criticism to redirect attention to personal and everyday experience of alienation and oppression of women (as reflected in literary texts).

INTRODUCTION The image in figure 1 is a screenshot of the hacking of the website of the Leba- nese Ministry of Energy and Water responsible for the country’s electricity in April 2012 by a group called Raise Your Voice, a self- proclaimed offshoot of the global hackers collective Anonymous.1 Protesting poor living conditions and in- adequate social services, the hackers not only crashed the government agency’s site but also substituted one text for another. Reenacting an electric cut, they transformed the cursor into a flashlight that needs to be moved around in order to light up an otherwise dark screen. This act of hacking defaces the ministry website through a textual and technological performance that involves viewers as active participants who need to move the cursor in order to reveal the text. But what is being exposed through this hacking? Is it the text itself, the reading practice directed toward it, or the failing nation-s tate unable to fulfill its duties vis- à- vis its citizens?     Identity Quest: When East Meets West in Bahaa Taher’s Sunset Oasis A Post-Colonial Reading Mona Kattaya, Ain Shams University, Egypt The IAFOR International Conference on Arts & Humanities – Dubai 2017 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract The cultural representation of the Western Other in modern Arabic fiction is a formidable body of texts that stretches over a span of almost one hundred years – from the beginning of the twentieth century until the present. Emerging out of the experience of colonization, most of these fictional narratives have asserted themselves by foregrounding the tension with the imperial Other, thus emphasizing a discourse where the encounter between East and West, whether literal or metaphorical, has been presented in a series of deep rooted dichotomies of East/West, colonized/colonizer, slave/master, backward/civilized, bonded/free, etc. From this cultural output stands out Bahaa Taher’s Sunset Oasis (2007). The winner of the inaugural International Prize for Arabic Fiction (IPAF) in March 2008, Sunset Oasis in a way continues the initial perceptions of the West in Arab fiction, but, more importantly, it, in other ways, contests them. This paper analyses the two main characters’ hybrid identities whose constructions expose what the post-colonial critic Homi Bhabha considers threats to authority in their revelation of colonial anxiety as well as anti-colonial resistance. The paper concludes that, in its decidedly holistic perspective, Bahaa Taher’s novel goes beyond the usual chaos and conflict of Eastern-Western encounters into spaces of understanding, equality, dialogue, and compatibility.
