Medler INTRODUCTION HIS bulletin attempts to present as accurate and complete a T guide to the leafhoppers of Minnesota as possible within the limits of the material available for study. It is realized that cer- tain groups could not be treated completely because of the lack of available material. Nevertheless, it is hoped that in its present form this treatise will serve as a convenient and useful manual for the systematic and economic worker concerned with the forms of the upper Mississippi Valley. In all cases a reference to the original description of the species and genus is given. Keys are included for the separation of species, genera, and supergeneric groups. In addition to the keys a brief diagnostic description of the important characters of each species is given. Extended descriptions or long lists of references have been omitted since citations to this literature are available from other sources if ac- tually needed (Van Duzee, 1917). -

Chloropelix canariensis Lindberg, 1936, Paradorydium desertorum Linnavuori, 1964, and P. spatulatum (Naudé, 1926) are recorded from the United Arab Emirates for the first time. These species were collected from Poaceae and Compositae in northeastern part of the country. Paradorydium deserto- rum is also recorded for the first time from Israel, and P. spatulatum, from Morocco. Two new synonyms are established: Bumizana deccani Viraktamath et Viraktamath, 1989, syn. nov. = P. spatulatum; Chloro- pelix indica Viraktamath et Viraktamath, 1989, syn. nov. = Ch. canariensis. The spiders ambushed pitcher-visiting flesh flies and dropped their carcasses into pitchers after consuming them. The consumption of shared prey-resources by crab spiders and pitcher plants presents the possibility of para- sitism between them. However, ecologically generalizable mechanisms that pre- dict the context-dependent outcomes of such mutualisms are not known. 2. The effectiveness framework (mutualism effectiveness = quality × quantity) is useful for examining the total effect of mutualisms, but its quality component can be difficult to define. We identify the crab spider–pitcher plant interaction as a type of resource conversion mutualism and propose that the quality component in such interactions is the amount of the underlying resource contained in each unit of resource processed. We then used the crab spider–pitcher plant interaction to test the hypothesis that resource conversion mutualisms are more beneficial to the nutrient recipient when operating through high-quality resources (i.e., large prey, in this interaction). -

The phylogenetic relationship among the genera of the subfamily Deltocephalinae and its allies occurring in Japan is studied, and the tribes Deltocephalini and Paralimnini are redefined. The phylogenetic analyses were based upon the maximum-parsimony method by the manual and computer-aided reconstruction with the Fitch characters and Wagner characters (non-weighted or weighted). Sixty-four characters were used for the phylogenetic analyses. Deltocephalini s. str. was concluded to be paraphyletic and includes 2 lineages. The DeEtocephaZus clade consists of Alobaldia, Deltocephalus, Endria, Recilia, and Paramesodes. Contrary, Futasujinus, Hengchunia, Takagiella, and Yanocephalus belong to the Paralimnus lineage with Paralimnus, Paralaevicephalus, Psnrmlotrttis, Metalimnus, Diplocolenus, Jassus, Sorhoanus, Doratura, and Aco~~~~wlla. The Deltocephalus clade was referred to the tribe Deltocephalini and the Paralimnus clade to the tribe Paralimnini. Key words: phylogeny, morphology, Deltocephalini, Paralimnini. Cica- dellidae . Introduction Both tribes of Deltocephalini and Paralimnini comprise small leafhoppers having trian- gularly produced vertex. These tribes include 137 and 69 genera, respectively, and are widely distributed in the world from the tropical to the semi-polar regions under various environmental conditions. Most of their hosts are monocotyledonous plants including rice and other agricultural crops. -

ScL 47(4): 360-365 (October 2012) Abstract A survey was conducted during the 2006 and 2007 growing seasons to record the presence of sharpshooters (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) vectors of Pierce's disease in Vitis vinifera L. growing regions of Virginia. Oncometopia orbona (F.) and Graphocephala versuta (Say) were consistently trapped in all regions and throughout each growing season, the latter trapped in the highest number. Peak flight of both species occurred early in the season, the time of greatest concern for introduction of infection. Peak flight of O. orbona occurred earlier than that of G. versuta. Homalodisca insolita (Walker) was trapped in the Coastal Plain of Virginia; this is the most northern record of this species to date. The causal agent is transmitted by sharpshooters (xylem-feeding Cicadellidae; Frazier and Freitag 1946), and by some froghoppers (Cercopidae; Severin 1950). Vine decline occurs when xylem fluids are blocked by proliferation of bacterial colonies as well as by plant response to infection (Hopkins 1989, Newman et al. 2003, Stevenson et al. 2005).
