We can’t let this slip away from us. Everybody doesn’t have to be on board, but we at least need to make sure that we have the right information. We can’t let this slip away from us. I’m not in favor of moving the intake station, because I know if they start excavating and find anything [of historic value] they will stop.” Supervisor Don Weaver, on the other hand, said that to his knowledge the matter didn’t have anything to do with the Point of Fork controversy. Rather, the hearings are being postponed “primarily because we have not received the water permit yet from the Department of Environmental Quality, and we did not want to move on until we have received that,” he said. Though Weaver didn’t know when the permit will arrive, he guessed within the next few weeks, and speculated that the hearings may be rescheduled then. “It’s pretty cut and dry,” he said. When asked how a delay would help the cause of the supposedly outnumbered su- pervisors, Ullenbruch said, “Maybe there’s an election coming up.” He declined to comment further, saying he didn’t wish to “put words in other people’s mouths.” Supervisors Tony O’Brien and Mike Sheridan weren’t immediately available Paid for and authorized by Friends of Kym Rouillard for comment. 10 | FLUVANNA REVIEW | October 22, 2015 To advertise email: sales@fl uvannareview.com Vootete Baarbararbara m.Caaryry CCaryary SchoolSchool BoardBoard CCandidateandidate wwithith “NNewew EEyesyes”

My name is Barbara Cary, and I am a candidate for the School Board position in the Fork Union District. I am a life-long resident of Fluvanna County and attended Fluvanna County Schools. I feel that I am a strong candidate, in part because of my vast array of computer and information technology experience throughout my career. My husband is Michael Cary. We have two sons, Michael (known as MC) and Adrian. We also have five precious grandchildren. Let me tell you about my background, and how it will benefit my being on the School Board.

I worked at the National Ground Intelligence Center in Charlottesville, retiring after 39 years of service, working mostly as an Information Technology Specialist and Division lead. In this position, I learned how to use, support, implement, and troubleshoot the computer and information technology systems for scientific and technical intelligence (S&TI) and general military intelligence (GMI) in support of the Department of the Army, Department of Defense, and national-level decision makers.

I am the Co-Founder and Executive Director of a small not-for-profit organization, Providing Resources to Inspire, Develop and Empower (PRIDE), Inc. which provides resources that enrich lives and strengthen the community through service and volunteering. I have been involved in creating change in my commu- nity through mentorship to prepare young people for college and the workforce.

My background has given me a unique and needed outlook that will be a valuable service to the school system, to the Fluvanna County School Board and to our community. I will be coming to the school board with “new eyes” from a different perspective. I feel strongly that the strength of our community and our society lies in the education of our children, and I want to be part of the continued process for this critical service to our community.

My vision for our school district is to become exceptional in learning to prepare our students for college, the workforce and be productive citizens. Listed are some of my views:

1. I would like to see more improvement in Early Childhood Development for PreK through K to enhance learning. This will benefit all students. It will espe- cially help students that are disadvantaged due to poverty. This could possibly reduce the dropout rate to “0” and reduce the number of students that may need assistance in special education. The quality of life for a child is important. From birth to 5 years old is when a child goes through tremendous growth and change, and we must develop a solid foundation for children.

2. Clear communication is very important for success. I will visit the schools to observe learning, not to interfere. I will collaborate with the school board as a team. I will make myself available via email, written note, phone call, or meetings that are convenient for parent’s work schedule and home visits, if necessary. I will not be involved in petty discussions, but facts. I will be an advocate for students, teachers, parents, staff, bus drivers and custodians because all are important and make a difference in what children learn, see, and hear every day.

The use of PowerSchool is an excellent tool for parents to know every day what their child is doing in school. Parents should be notified daily about their child’s progress via email. This is clear communications for the parents to know what is going on with their child.

3. With my technology background, I will be able to ask questions, such as what are the advantages/disadvantages of Chrome Books verses Tablets or iPads for our students to use. Just because it’s cheaper doesn’t mean it’s the best product. Our high school students must take advantage of all the technology available. Students must know the content of their subject matter and be able to present what they have learned by using such software as PowerPoint with the technology they have in the classroom. Learn how to create video, audio and insert into their presentation using various animations to make their work stand out. Preparing students now will make them better equipped when they have to present a briefing at college or work.

4. Teachers must become tech savvy to stay ahead of the students. I am an advocate for teacher career development and incentive programs because they are very valuable to the success of the students. I am very proud of our teachers and appreciate their hard work and dedication.

5. Develop more science & engineering enrichment programs (i.e., Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics [STEM]) for all the schools including kindergarten.

I feel that I will be an outstanding School Board Member. I am motivated by the best interest of all Fluvanna County students. I am passionate about education and paving the road to success for our children, and I will always support our excellent teachers.

If you believe that I will make an excellent addition to the Fluvanna School Board, please vote for me on November 3.” Paid for by Barbara M.
