March 4, 2010 | FLUVANNA REVIEW | 13 Arts For Local Crafter, Making Baskets More Than a Passion BY PAGE H. GIFFORD CORRESPONDENT

Nancy Jewel has been making hand-crafted baskets for thirty years. “I was caning chairs long before I took up basket weaving. I saw an article in a magazine about making a basket, I tried it and I was hooked.” Jewel used to live in the rural countryside of Loudon County, in the deep woods where the simplicity of country life was natural and accepted. That simplicity is still present in her home in Lake Monticello. The beauty of simplicity is also highlighted in her bas- kets. And though Jewel’s passion for baskets is obvious, it’s the history she has learned along her crafting journey that fascinates her. She has learned from master basket weavers the tried and true tricks of the trade, handed down from generation to generation. Many farm- ers shared their skill and told of the history of basket weaving in the Shenandoah Valley. Basket weaving has become an art form today but was once a necessity for pioneers and farmers throughout the South. “I think they are wonderful for storing things,” said Jewel, “and centuries ago they had a purpose. They were used for activities of daily living, for picking herbs or flowers and the open weave would allow the dirt to shake off and fall through. There are potato baskets, hen baskets, egg baskets, market baskets, baskets to hold firewood, for storing vegetables in the root cellar, anything they could use a basket, for they did. “When they settled in the Shenandoah Valley, it was the Germans and English who produced many of the baskets with their particu- Nancy Jewel demonstrates making a basket. Cover Citizen of the Year BY O. T. HOLEN CORRESPONDENT

A lot of people in Fluvanna County know Wade Parrish and all of them seem glad they ran into him. Named “Farm Bureau Citizen of the Year,” Wade Parrish and this writer sit on a couch in the basement of the Carysbrook gym on a recent day talk- ing about his life while numerous parents and kids stream by. Wade speaks to virtually each of the adults, holding brief conversa- tions with many. He knows—at least by sight—every adult that passes by us on this busy Saturday morning in this busy community center. Wade and several other volunteers from Fluvanna Youth Baseball are here to sign up kids for the Cal Ripkin/Babe Ruth League. Spring seems a long way away on this crisp winter morning—the baseball dia- mond out front of the building lies under eight inches of crusty snow. Graduating from Fluvanna County High School in 1981, the 47 year-old Parrish has lived his entire life in Fluvanna County, growing up on the family farm with two sisters on Ruritan Lake Road. He has no interest in living anywhere else and seems genuinely surprised a newspaper wants to do a story on him. Wade Parrish checks the cattle at his mother-in-law's farm. Photos by O.T. Holen.
