Turkish Nationalist Propaganda in the Sanjak of Alexandretta CONTESTED NATIONALISMS: TURKISH NATIONALIST PROPAGANDA IN THE SANJAK OF ALEXANDRETTA Graduate School of Economics and Social Sciences of İhsan Doğramacı Bilkent University by ESRA DEMİRCİ AKYOL In Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY İHSAN DOĞRAMACI BİLKENT UNIVERSITY ANKARA December 2015 ABSTRACT CONTESTED NATIONALISMS: TURKISH NATIONALIST PROPAGANDA IN THE SANJAK OF ALEXANDRETTA Demirci Akyol, Esra PhD., Department of History Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. M. Akif Kireçci December 2015 This thesis analyzes the Turkish nationalist propaganda carried out in the Sanjak of Alexandretta during the process of annexation to demonstrate that the Sanjak provides a special case for the study of Republican Turkish nationalism by showing its highly pragmatic and speculative political/ideological discourse in the 1930s. The ways with which the Sanjak region was integrated into the newly defined “Turkish nation” are examined by utilizing archival documents, secondary sources as well as oral history interviews. The special case of the migration of the conservative Sunni Turks to Damascus and the nationalist propaganda towards the Alawite population of the region are brought forward as examples for the pragmatically inclusive nature of Kemalist nationalism. Key Words: Sanjak of Alexandretta, Hatay, Turkish Nationalism, Kemalist Reforms, Annexation of Hatay, Nationalist Propaganda i ÖZET MİLLİYETÇİLİKLERİN REKABETİ: İSKENDERUN SANCAĞI’NDA TÜRK MİLLİYETÇİLİĞİ PROPAGANDASI Demirci Akyol, Esra Doktora, Tarih Bölümü Tez Yöneticisi: Yrd. Doç. Dr. M. Akif Kireçci Aralık 2015 Bu tez, İskenderun Sancağında ilhak sürecinde yürütülen Türk milliyetçilik propagandasını inceleyerek 1930’larda Sancak’ta kullanılan faydacı ve spekülatif Türk milliyetçiliği politik diskurunun Sancak konusunu Türk milliyetçiliği çalışmaları kapsamında özel bir vaka haline getirdiğini gözler önüne sermeyi amaçlar. Sancak bölgesinin yeni tanımlanan “Türk milleti”ne nasıl entegre edildiği arşiv materyalleri, ikincil kaynaklar ve sözlü tarih görüşmeleri kullanılarak incelenmiştir. Muhafazakâr Sünni Türklerin, Kemalist reformların bölgede uygulanmasına bir tepki olarak, Hatay’dan Şam’a göç etmesi ve bölgede yaşayan Alevilere yönelik uygulanan milliyetçilik propagandası Kemalist milliyetçiliğin faydacı/içermeci yapısına örnek olarak verilmiştir. STRUGGLE FOR EAST-EUROPEAN EMPIRE: 1400-1700 The Crimean Khanate, Ottomans and the Rise of the Russian Empire* HALİL İNALCIK The empire of the Golden Horde, built by Batu, son of Djodji and the grand son of Genghis Khan, around 1240, was an empire which united the whole East-Europe under its domination. The Golden Horde empire comprised ali of the remnants of the earlier nomadic peoples of Turkic language in the steppe area which were then known under the common name of Tatar within this new political framework. The Golden Horde ruled directly över the Eurasian steppe from Khwarezm to the Danube and över the Russian principalities in the forest zone indirectly as tribute-paying states. Already in the second half of the 13th century the western part of the steppe from the Don river to the Danube tended to become a separate political entity under the powerful emir Noghay. In the second half of the 14th century rival branches of the Djodjid dynasty, each supported by a group of the dissident clans, started a long struggle for the Ulugh-Yurd, the core of the empire in the lower itil (Volga) river, and for the title of Ulugh Khan which meant the supreme ruler of the empire. Toktamish Khan restored, for a short period, the unity of the empire. When defeated by Tamerlane, his sons and dependent clans resumed the struggle for the Ulugh-Khan-ship in the westem steppe area. During ali this period, the Crimean peninsula, separated from the steppe by a narrow isthmus, became a refuge area for the defeated in the steppe.

  • Race and Transnationalism in the First Syrian-American Community, 1890-1930
Abstract Title of Thesis: RACE ACROSS BORDERS: RACE AND TRANSNATIONALISM IN THE FIRST SYRIAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY, 1890-1930 Zeinab Emad Abrahim, Master of Arts, 2013 Thesis Directed By: Professor, Madeline Zilfi Department of History This research explores the transnational nature of the citizenship campaign amongst the first Syrian Americans, by analyzing the communication between Syrians in the United States with Syrians in the Middle East, primarily Jurji Zaydan, a Middle-Eastern anthropologist and literary figure. The goal is to demonstrate that while Syrian Americans negotiated their racial identity in the United States in order to attain the right to naturalize, they did so within a transnational framework. Placing the Syrian citizenship struggle in a larger context brings to light many issues regarding national and racial identity in both the United States and the Middle East during the turn of the twentieth century. The mission, which was organized jointly with the World Health Organization (WHO), the Ministry of Health of Turkey and the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency of the Prime Ministry of Turkey (AFAD), the United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for refugees (UNHCR) and comprised representatives of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). It was coordinated by WHO. The primary goals of the mission were: to gain a better understanding of the capacities existing in the camps, including the health services provided, and the functioning of the referral system; and, on the basis of the findings, identify how the United Nations agencies could contribute to supporting activities related to safeguarding the health of the more than 138 000 Syrian citizens living in Turkey at the time of the mission. The mission team found that the high-level Turkish health-care services were accessible to and free of charge for all Syrian refugees, independent of whether they were living in or outside the camps.
