• Intralingual Translation in Brazilian Road Films
Nayara Helou Chubaci Güércio 19327727 The Traveller as a Translator: Intralingual Translation in Brazilian Road Films Trinity College Dublin MPhil in Literary Translation 2020 Supervised by Dr. Michael Cronin DECLARATION I declare that this dissertation has not been submitted as an exercise for a degree at this or any other university and that it is entirely my own work. I agree that the Library may lend or copy this dissertation on request. Nayara Helou Chubaci Güércio 03/09/2020 The Traveller as a Translator: Intralingual Translation in Brazilian Road Films Nayara Helou Chubaci Güércio This dissertation aims at answering the following question: what are the visual and thematic choices in the representation of intralingual translation in Brazilian cinematic travel narratives? The corpus of analysis is comprised by the films: Central Station (Water Salles, 1998) and Cinema, Aspirins and Vultures (Marcelo Gomes, 2005). This study hopes to continue the research developed in the books Translation Goes to the Movies (Cronin 2009) and Across the Lines: Travel, Language, Translation (Cronin 2000). This research subscribes to the logical system of deduction and it is categorised as a basic empirical study. The materials used are from bibliographical and audiovisual sources. The chosen method of analysis is an interpretation of Casetti & Di Chio’s (1998: 126) methodological proposal for analysing the filmic text, which are: isolation, identification and interpretation. The categories of analysis are Cronin’s (2006: 131) three levels in which intralingual translation can occur. After the analysis, it is concluded that the thematic choices in the representation of intralingual translation in Brazilian cinematic travel narratives revolve around: 1) the effects of intralingual translation in each of the travellers’ identities; 2) the role of intralingual translation in the relationship forged between the two travellers and; 3) the role of intralingual translation in the relationship forged between the travellers and other characters.

  • One Country, Two Cups—The International Image of Brazil in 1950 and in 2014
International Journal of Communication 9(2015), 1300–1318 1932–8036/20150005 One Country, Two Cups— The International Image of Brazil in 1950 and in 2014: A Study of the Reputation and the Identity of Brazil as Projected by the International Media During the Two FIFA World Cups in the Country DANIEL BUARQUE1 King’s College London, UK This article analyzes the international image of Brazil as projected in the foreign media coverage of the two World Cups held in the country through the theoretical framework of nation branding and competitive identity. Brazil hosted the 1950 and the 2014 FIFA World Cups as a strategy to improve its international image. This article uses content and discourse analysis of international media articles to show that, as a public diplomacy strategy, hosting the Cups was a big success. There was an increase in the visibility of Brazil in both years because of the Cups, but there was also a change in the frames used to describe Brazil, from the economy and culture to politics, and a change in tone, from positive to negative. The use of stereotypes about Brazil also became more frequent in 2014. Keywords: international image, nation branding, Brazil, identity, football, World Cup Introduction In October 2007, when Brazil was announced as the host of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva spoke passionately about what was seen as an international achievement of the country. Brazil, he said, should “prove to the world that we have a growing, stable economy and that we are one of the countries that achieved stability” (Silva, 2007, p.

Both the Chinese and the Greeks, before the Christian era, as well as the Florentines during the Renaissance, played games based on moving a sphere with their feet. Tsu-chu in China, Kemari, in Japan, Epyskiros, in Greece, and Harpastrum, in the Roman Empire, are some of the names of rudimentary forms of the game that became known as football. Developed by the English starting in the 12th century, it was only in the first half of the 19th century that football acquired a set of rules, seeking to differentiate it from rugby, another very popular sport in British schools. In 1863, the Football Association was created, consolidating the rules and organizing the first games and tournaments of the new sport.

  • The Development of the American Scrimmage System: a Discussion
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 24, No. 2 (2002) The Development of the American Scrimmage System: A Discussion By Ian Speers The development of the American scrimmage system in the early years of the game marked the first significant departure of American football from its Rugby parent, and has had a lasting effect upon the American game since that time, and would later have a similar effect upon Canadian football. The secondary historical accounts of the development of this innovation are surprisingly brief, giving the impression that the point of divergence of the American game from Rugby can be dated to 12 October 1880: the day that Walter Camp persuaded the American Intercollegiate teams to accept the following "snap-back" rule, which he is alleged to have drafted personally: A scrimmage takes place when the holder of the ball, being in the field of play, puts it down in front of him and puts it in play (while on-side) by-- 1st, kicking the ball; 2nd, by snapping it back with the foot. The man who first receives the ball from the snap-back shall be called the quarter-back, and shall not then rush forward with the ball under penalty of a foul. This rule has lately been interpreted as the sole innovation of Walter Camp, and is reported in most recent histories as marking the first departure of American football from the game of Rugby Union. By eliminating the old-style Rugby scrum and replacing it with the more open scrimmage system, many historians have argued that Camp single-handedly directed American football away from its English parent.

  • The Technical Assessment of Individual Performance in Rugby Union Players
The technical assessment of individual performance in rugby union players. Andrew Craig Green A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Health Science, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy. Johannesburg, 2016 i Declaration I, Andrew Green, declare that the work contained in this thesis is my own work, except to the extent indicated in the acknowledgements section. This thesis is being submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. This work has not been submitted for any other degree or examination in this or any other university. 16 July 2016 (signature of candidate) ii Abstract Performance in Rugby Union relies on a wide variety of contributions of different individual skills. Individual tasks, such as passing, kicking or scrummaging are dependent on an individual’s ability and may vary according to a player’s playing position. The focus of this thesis is a series of studies which have assessed the performance of individual rugby players (particularly related to the assessment of passing, kicking and scrummaging) and to evaluate such performance in relation to factors (most often kinematic factors) which have been identified and correlated to better performance. The main body of this thesis includes seven studies, in the form of original papers, which firstly describe the factors which contribute to rugby passing accuracy (two studies), thereafter two studies which focus on kicking success are described. The final three studies describe the development of a new device for measuring individual scrummaging performance. These studies also investigated: the role of body positioning in the generation of scrummaging force; and assessed how such factors may respond to the fatigue experienced over the duration of a rugby game.
