Mark Hartnady Cape Town, December 9, 2011 Abstract This research report uses the historiographical method to investigate the development and evolution of Integral Coaching – a fast-growing method of professional coaching that lacks a clear documented history. The purpose of this report is to provide such a documented history. Through the narrative analysis of group discussions and expert interviews, the researcher sets out to capture the events, themes and ideas of thought-leaders that informed the development of the discipline. The researcher uses this data to create a documented model of understanding that is comprehensible to organisations or individuals interested in Integral Coaching but lacking knowledge about the discipline. The researcher finds that the key influencers that informed Integral Coaching are rooted in (1) the anti-intellectual experiential movements which occurred during the Human Potential Movement in California in the 1960s-70s, (2) a wellspring of intellectual works during the 1970s-80s by various scientists, philosophers, theorists and psychologists on language, cognition & perception and (3) the work done since the 1980’s by James Flaherty (and other faculty of New Ventures West) to formalise Integral Coaching using processes and models for coaches derived from experiential knowledge that incorporates both Western and Eastern theories and philosophies. Research Type/Method: Inductive qualitative (historiography and narrative analysis). Purpose/Originality/Value: This report will benefit organisations and individuals interested in learning about this particular style of coaching that has an established history and is grounded in academic theory.     Cults and Cosmic Consciousness: Religious Vision in the American 1960s CAMILLE PAGLIA 1. eclipse by politics Commentary on the 1960s has been mas- sive. Law and politics in that turbulent decade are well doc- umented but remain controversial, and the same thing can be said of contemporary innovations in mass media and the arts. One major area remains ambiguous or poorly assimi- lated, however—the new religious vision, which for a tanta- lizing moment in the American sixties brought East and West together in a progressive cultural synthesis. Its promise was never completely fulfilled, for reasons I will try to sketch here. But the depth and authenticity of that spiritual shift need to be more widely acknowledged. A political model currently governs interpretations of the sixties because of the enduring reform movements born in that period, including environmentalism, feminism, and gay liberation. Their mobilizing energy, as well as the organiza- tional style that would also be adopted by antiwar protests, initially came from the civil rights movement sparked by the us Supreme Court’s 1954 decision declaring segregation in public schools unconstitutional. In that crusade, it must be remembered, ordained Protestant ministers such as Martin Luther King, Jr., played a leading role, as they also had in nineteenth-century abolitionism. The civil rights movement, with its hymns and anthems, appealed not just to secular standards of social justice but to a higher moral code. An expanded version of a lecture delivered on 26 March 2002 at Yale University, sponsored by the Institute for the Advanced Study of Religion at Yale.

    Pavel’s Pick: Transformation: The Life & Legacy of Werner Erhard A Documentary By Pavel Mikoloski For the BLEEPING Herald So whatever happened to Werner Erhard? In the 80’s it was hard to avoid knowing about him. People attended his Erhard Seminars Training, known as “est,” in legion in all of the major cities and it sometimes felt to people like me, living in New York City at the time, that these people were hard to get rid of – it seemed they were hell-bent on recruitment, and they wouldn’t take “no” for an answer. Even those of us who were interested in transformation found it hard to avoid the “newly empowered.” There was even a disparaging name for them. They were called “est-holes.” Producer/Director Robyn Symon, former staff Producer with PBS and a two time Emmy winner, does a wonderful job separating the myth from the man and brings us up to date in answering the question – whatever happened to this past cultural icon, now all but forgotten? In her new documentary, Transformation: The Life & Legacy of Werner Erhard, which premiered in April at the Palm Beach International Film Festival, I was pleased to see that Symon does not shy away from the controversies which swirled around this man, resulting in his walking away from est and going underground, while also managing to honor the work of one of the key figures in the Human Potential Movement. Anyone who has an interest in the power of the mind and in personal transformation would do well to see this film, as it presents an unbiased look at a volatile and creative period in American Pop Cultural History and elucidates the reasons for this innovative leader’s departure from the American scene.

He is the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Annual 2009 Review of High Performance Coaching and Consulting, the International Journal of Sports Science and Coaching, and the Annual Review of Golf Coaching. He is also author of Sports Science Handbook: The Essential Guide to Kinesiology, Sport and Exercise Science. His career in providing coaching and consultancy began in earnest as a caddie on the PGA European Tour. Beyond golf, he spent three years at Pepperdine University developing a life skills program for NCAA Division 1 student-athletes. Simon has a B.Sc. in Sports Science from Brighton Polytechnic and a Doctorate in Experimental Psychology from the University of Oxford.
