I am sure that such unnecessary waste can be reduced. The substantial progress made in the science of fire prevention and fire protection in this country during the past forty years convinces me that the means are available for limiting this unnecessary destruction.” iii Introduction It is my pleasure to present the report of the 17th Annual Harry S. Truman Legacy Symposium and President Truman Fire Forum held in Key West, Florida, on May 5-7, 2019. The symposium is an annual educational event hosted by the Harry S. Truman Little White House and the Key West Harry S. Truman Foundation. This year’s theme, “Truman’s Legacy Toward Fire Prevention, Fire Safety, and Historic Preservation”, centered on the achievements of the 1947 President’s Conference on Fire Prevention and its follow-up reports (Appendix A). On May 6, 1947 President Truman, in response to a series of deadly fires, gathered the country’s best and brightest to convene the 1947 President’s National Conference on Fire Prevention. During the three-day event, those in attendance dedicated themselves to finding solutions to America’s deadly fire problem, the antithesis of an industrialized nation. Thus, fire prevention became a critical part of building a safer nation. Seventy-two years later, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation is taking a page from President Truman’s playbook. -

Ritual Remembrance: Freud’s Primal Theory of Collective Memory Taylor Schey In the fnal essay of Totem and Taboo, Freud infamously claims that civilization began wHen a band of brotHers brutally murdered tHeir fatHer. THis postulation leads Freud to conclude tHat “tHe beginnings of religion, morals, society and art converge in the Oedipus complex,”1 and, accordingly, most readers, regardless of their argument, presuppose that the text depicts a “fundamental oedipal revolt.”2 This is how Peter Gay characterizes the action of Totem and Taboo in his short introduction to the Norton Standard Edition, and this is how the text is generally re- membered. While we may forget the moves of Freud’s argument and the details of his historical narrative—not to mention the frst three essays of the book—we do remember that, according to Freud, in the beginning was the Oedipus complex. It is not surprising, tHen, tHat many readers Have felt Freud went too far with Totem and Taboo. Its publication incited anthropologists to attack the universality of the Oedipus complex;3 others have turned the tables on Freud and charged him with projecting his own oedipal guilt onto an imagined horde of parricidal sons;4 and most in the feld of psychoanaly- sis have come to disregard Totem and Taboo, in part because it threatens the validity of the Oedipus complex. As E. B. Spillius explains: “today the idea of the Oedipus complex no longer needs to be defended against rival schools of psychoanalysis, and the use of the Oedipus complex to explain the origin of civilization would do it more harm than good” (187). -

1 TIMOTHY 4 Prophetic Forewarning, the Value of Sound Doctrine & Encouragement to Persevere vv. 1-5 CONDITIONS IN THE CHURCH IN THE LATTER TIMES [1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, 3 forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving; 5 for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. ] After having given Timothy a description of the qualifications for pastors/overseers/bishops and deacons to promote the spiritual health and growth of the Church; he turns his attention to the future conditions of the Church. Why is this important? Because the Holy Spirit expressly communicates this truth; meaning He speaks clearly and often about this subject. Note that Paul talks about this again in his second letter to Timothy { 2 Tim. 3:1-13 } so it is an extremely important subject for every believer to consider and take seriously. Paul uses a noteworthy term for this period of time—‘in latter times ’. The Greek word for ‘times ’ here means a ‘ set or measured time ’; in other words, at an appropriate time . This is important to note because Paul could have used another word for ‘time’, [‘ chronos ’], which refers to an unspecified period or season of time. -
Violence on the Brain: a Critique of Neuroscience in Criminal Law
VIOLENCE ON THE BRAIN: A CRITIQUE OF NEUROSCIENCE IN CRIMINAL LAW Amanda C. Pustilnik* Is there such a thing as a criminally "violent brain"? Does it make sense to speak of "the neurobiology of violence" or the "psychopathology of crime"? Is it possible to answer on a physiological level what makes one person engage in criminal violence and another not, under similar circumstances? Current research in law and neuroscience is promising to answer these questions with a "yes." Some legal scholars working in this area claim that we are close to realizing the "early criminologists' dream of identifying the biological roots of criminality." These hopes for a neuroscientific transformation of the criminal law, although based in the newest research, are part of a very old story. Criminal law and neuroscience have been engaged in an ill-fated and sometimes tragic affair for over two hundred years. Three issues have recurred that track those that bedeviled earlierefforts to ground criminal law in brain sciences. First is the claim that the brain is often the most relevant or fundamental level at which to understand criminal conduct. Second is that the various phenomena we call "criminal violence" arise causally from dysfunction within specific locations in the brain ("localization"). Third is the related claim that, because much violent criminality arises from brain dysfunction, people who commit such acts are biologically different from typical people ("alterity"or "otherizing"). Pacquing Abstract: Modern society is marked with utmost ambivalence. There is the utmost desire to be free, creative, and productive. Yet, our creative and productive desires trap us and now control our own freedom to become. Couple this inconsistency with the rapid sociostructural changes, fragmentation of traditions, and dissolution of communal well-being, what we have is a life of uncertainty. It is a life debased from its very ontological foundation with the transmission of technorationalities of the capitalist industry. In modernity, we could no longer speak of individuality and subjectivity since the very historical thread that serve as its foundation is now wavered towards accumulation and possession of the capital. Moreover, this overleaning towards the capital deadens us unconsciously that we mistake this for reality. The market ideology with all its rationalizations reifies human consciousness to the extent that we consider the technorationalities as the ontological normative structure. As a result, there is a growing dislocation of subjectivity which leads to neurotic social behaviors and inner social contradictions. As a result, we have our own social discontents. It is then the aim of this paper to ponder on the psychosocial effects of the market economy. I argue that there is a need to look at the effects of this economic system that perpetually delineate subjective experiences and plunge humanity into incontrovertible pseudo images. It is at this point that Fromm’s radical psychosocial interpretation of society becomes binding. -

Neuroscientists focus on the brain and its impact on behavior and cognitive (thinking) functions. They also investigate what happens to the nervous system when people have neurological, psychiatric, and neurodevelopmental disorders. Sometimes neuroscience and neurobiology are used to mean the same thing. However, neurobiology looks at the biology of the nervous system, while neuroscience refers to anything to do with the nervous system (ibid). These fields of work are intricately connected with medical research.
