Bazerman† Abstract Should a Catholic hospital abort a life-threatening pregnancy or let a pregnant woman die? Should a religious employer allow his employees access to contraceptives or break with healthcare legislation? People and organizations of faith often face moral decisions that have significant consequences. Research in psychology found that religion is typically associated with deontological judgment. Yet deontology consists of many principles, which may, at times, conflict. In three studies, we design a conflict between moral principles and find that the relationship between moral judgment and religiosity is more nuanced than currently assumed. Studies 1 and 2 show that, while religious U.S. Christians and Israeli Jews are more likely to form deontological judgments, they divide between the deontological principles of inaction and indirectness. Using textual analysis, we reveal that specific beliefs regarding divine responsibility and human responsibility distinguish inaction from indirectness deontologists. Study 3 exploits natural differences in religious saliency across days of the week to provide causal evidence that religion raises deontological tendencies on Sundays and selectively increases the appeal of inaction deontology for those who believe in an interventionist and responsible God. Very few people know about visualization. Out of that group, very few believe that it works! And, even fewer know how to do it correctly. In fact, many people who teach visualization to others, and charge ridiculous amounts of money for it, don't have a clue of how to do it correctly themselves. They're simply regurgitating information they either read or heard about somewhere - without ever using them to get measurable results in their own lives! But that's no surprise, is it? That sort of thing happens in almost every field. Sad, but true. The process I'm going to share with you works! I know because I have used it and achieved measurable, consistent results! I have shared it with others who have also gotten verifiable results (at least those who did the process correctly.) Box 8500, Charlotte, NC 28271 / www.equip.org / tel.704.887.8200 / fax.704.887.8299 STATEMENT DS410 SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTISM The main emphasis of ministry at the Christian Research Institute is to provide inform ation which will help those who are evangelizing the millions of people presently entangled in cults, the occult, and various false religions. Because of this, and because Dr. Walter Martin did some pioneer research on Adventism in the late 1950's, we are frequently asked what our position is on the subject of Seventh-day Adventism (hereafter "SDA" for short). Though several capable Christian scholars (e.g., Anthony Hoekema, J.K. Van Baalen, John Gerstner) have concluded that SDA is a non-Christian cult system, CRI has continued to assert that this is not the case. We take this position based on the content of the doctrine which was stated in an official SDA publication (1957) entitled Questions on Doctrine. It should be noted that in 1983 W. Richard Lesher, vice-president of the General Conference, affirmed that SDA stood behind the publication Questions on Doctrine. Since SDA does accept the foundational doctrines of historic Christianity (the Trinity, Christ's true deity, His bodily resurrection, etc.) we do not believe that it should be classified as a non-Christian cult. It is our conviction that one cannot be a true Jehovah's Witness, Mormon, Christian Scientist, etc., and be a practicing Christian in the biblical sense of the word; but it is possible to be a Seventh-day Adventist and a true follower of Jesus, despite certain distinctive Adventist doctrines which we consider to be unbiblical. -

CHAPTER ONE AMERICA’S FASCINATION WITH MULTIPLE MURDER he break of dawn on November 16, 1957, heralded the start of deer hunting T season in rural Waushara County, Wisconsin. The men of Plainfield went off with their hunting rifles and knives but without any clue of what Edward Gein would do that day. Gein was known to the 647 residents of Plainfield as a quiet man who kept to himself in his aging, dilapidated farmhouse. But when the men of the vil- lage returned from hunting that evening, they learned the awful truth about their 51-year-old neighbor and the atrocities that he had ritualized within the walls of his farmhouse. The first in a series of discoveries that would disrupt the usually tranquil town occurred when Frank Worden arrived at his hardware store after hunting all day. Frank’s mother, Bernice Worden, who had been minding the store, was missing and so was Frank’s truck. But there was a pool of blood on the floor and a trail of blood leading toward the place where the truck had been garaged. The investigation of Bernice’s disappearance and possible homicide led police to the farm of Ed Gein. Because the farm had no electricity, the investigators con- ducted a slow and ominous search with flashlights, methodically scanning the barn for clues. The sheriff’s light suddenly exposed a hanging figure, apparently Mrs. Worden. As Captain Schoephoerster later described in court: Mrs. Worden had been completely dressed out like a deer with her head cut off at the shoulders. -
Creativity, Theory, and Practice
NAME Definitions of a Creative Person and a Creative Contribution I have always considered myself a creative person. It is a part of my identity, and it has shaped my path in life. As a young child, as my friends dreamt of becoming baseball players and firefighters, I said I wanted to become an inventor. I was constantly having ideas of inventions that would make people’s lives easier. When I played with Legos, I never used the instructions; instead I would always mix the different sets together to create a car - that could also be a boat - that also had wings that folded out to fly - which had an arsenal of weapons for defense, but also turned into a base for defense. Growing up in school, I never wanted to solve answers the methodological way they taught us. I did not want to fill out the blanks in a worksheet, but to analyze the problem and see different solutions than the one answer in the textbook. I hated when teachers made us use their one method for math, when I would solve it my own way. This creativity is what lead me to the creative path of being a UX Designer. A UX Designer is tasked with analyzing User Research and coming up with innovative solutions to fill the user needs. Throughout my classes at DePaul, I have used facets of creativity to solve problems. In this paper, I will discuss how I approached and solved various situations in my professional, academic, and personal life using creativity. This will be elucidated through analysis and comparison of the facets of creativity and creative works as understood in scholarly works. -
What Is Science of Mind Or Religious Science?
AFSI Class Lecture 2015 What is Science of Mind or Religious Science? The simple answer to the question, (the one I can give you in 10 minutes) can be found in Wikipedia. It says: “Science of Mind was established in 1927 by Ernest Holmes (1887–1960) and is a spiritual, philosophical and metaphysical religious movement within the New Thought movement. In general, the term "Science of Mind" applies to the teachings, while the term "Religious Science" applies to the organizations. However, adherents often use the terms interchangeably. In his book, The Science of Mind, Ernest Holmes stated "Religious Science is a correlation of laws of science, opinions of philosophy, and revelations of religion applied to human needs and the aspirations of man." He also stated that Religious Science/Science of Mind (RS/SOM) is not based on any "authority" of established beliefs, but rather on "what it can accomplish" for the people who practice it.” This last statement is a very important one. Science of Mind is, above all else, a practice that is designed to produce tangible results in the lives of its adherents. Wikipedia lists 12 beliefs and 10 core concepts and I shall spare you the reading of them! Instead I shall attempt to summarize this Spiritual practice in this way: 1. The mind of God is always of the Good. 2. Your life results, flow from your mind aligned or misaligned with this Good. This requires learning new ways of thinking. This is why Science of Mind organizations see themselves as “Centers” of learning. The phenomenon called “The Secret” and ideas like the Law of Attraction from the teachings of Abraham / Hicks, find an enthusiastic audience in these Centers. -

The Heritage of Non-theistic Belief in China Joseph A. Adler Kenyon College Presented to the international conference, "Toward a Reasonable World: The Heritage of Western Humanism, Skepticism, and Freethought" (San Diego, September 2011) Naturalism and humanism have long histories in China, side-by-side with a long history of theistic belief. In this paper I will first sketch the early naturalistic and humanistic traditions in Chinese thought. I will then focus on the synthesis of these perspectives in Neo-Confucian religious thought. I will argue that these forms of non-theistic belief should be considered aspects of Chinese religion, not a separate realm of philosophy. Confucianism, in other words, is a fully religious humanism, not a "secular humanism." The religion of China has traditionally been characterized as having three major strands, the "three religions" (literally "three teachings" or san jiao) of Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism. Buddhism, of course, originated in India in the 5th century BCE and first began to take root in China in the 1st century CE, so in terms of early Chinese thought it is something of a latecomer. Confucianism and Daoism began to take shape between the 5th and 3rd centuries BCE. But these traditions developed in the context of Chinese "popular religion" (also called folk religion or local religion), which may be considered a fourth strand of Chinese religion. And until the early 20th century there was yet a fifth: state religion, or the "state cult," which had close relations very early with both Daoism and Confucianism, but after the 2nd century BCE became associated primarily (but loosely) with Confucianism. -

On December 27, 2002, Brigitte Boisselier, the director of the biotechnology company Clonaid, part of the International Raelian Movement, announced they had successfully cloned a baby girl. This news report enlivened the controversy on human cloning, which originated in February 1997 with the news of Dolly’s birth. El País constructed the controversy as a fundamental problem of scientific policy. This study sug- gests that El País wants to persuade policy makers to establish limited regula- tions on experimentation with embryo stem cells for therapeutic purposes. To achieve this goal, this newspaper used scientific sources selected ad hoc and a series of well-defined rhetorical strategies.
