  • French Stewardship of Jazz: the Case of France Musique and France Culture
ABSTRACT Title: FRENCH STEWARDSHIP OF JAZZ: THE CASE OF FRANCE MUSIQUE AND FRANCE CULTURE Roscoe Seldon Suddarth, Master of Arts, 2008 Directed By: Richard G. King, Associate Professor, Musicology, School of Music The French treat jazz as “high art,” as their state radio stations France Musique and France Culture demonstrate. Jazz came to France in World War I with the US army, and became fashionable in the 1920s—treated as exotic African- American folklore. However, when France developed its own jazz players, notably Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, jazz became accepted as a universal art. Two well-born Frenchmen, Hugues Panassié and Charles Delaunay, embraced jazz and propagated it through the Hot Club de France. After World War II, several highly educated commentators insured that jazz was taken seriously. French radio jazz gradually acquired the support of the French government. This thesis describes the major jazz programs of France Musique and France Culture, particularly the daily programs of Alain Gerber and Arnaud Merlin, and demonstrates how these programs display connoisseurship, erudition, thoroughness, critical insight, and dedication. France takes its “stewardship” of jazz seriously. Ware • Kadima Collective • Event Calendar NEW YORK Despite the burgeoning reputations of other cities, New York still remains the jazz capital of the world, if only for sheer volume. A night in NYC is a month, if not more, anywhere else - an astonishing amount of music packed in its 305 square miles (Manhattan only 34 of those!). This is normal for the city but this month, there’s even more, seams bursting with amazing concerts. New York@Night Summer is traditionally festival season but never in recent memory have 4 there been so many happening all at once. We welcome back impresario George Interview: Mark Feldman Wein (Megaphone) and his annual celebration after a year’s absence, now (and by Sean Fitzell hopefully for a long time to come) sponsored by CareFusion and featuring the 6 70th Birthday Celebration of Herbie Hancock (On The Cover). • Sound Directions Inc
SOUND DIRECTIONS, INC. Senior Leadership Resumes JAMES EMERY Guitarist/composer James Emery, virtuoso guitarist and composer, has been active on the international jazz and contemporary music scene since 1975. He has recorded 26 CDs as a leader or co-leader and has performed his works in over 25 countries worldwide. He has received international critical acclaim for his work leading various ensemble formations, and he is also celebrated for his work with the String Trio of New York, a veritable institution of jazz and creative music which he co- founded in 1977. Emery has become known for his distinctive and highly original approach to both improvisation and composition. His sound and ideas are immediately recognizable, leading the distinguished music critic Francis Davis to observe “Absolutely nobody sounds like Emery”. This singular artistic expression has resulted in many awards, grants and commissions, most notably a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1995. His sensibility as a musician draws in nearly equal measures on formal notions of structure and technique and a robust willingness to improvise, experiment and follow his musical intuition. Emery has been acclaimed as “one of the world’s finest guitarists...[he] possesses an encyclopedic jazz vocabulary as a technician and composer ...staggering technical virtuosity, remarkable creative spirit...” (allaboutjazz.com). The New York Times wrote, “Emery is a fleet guitarist with a personal touch and sound...mercurial, poised and thoroughly satisfying.” The German magazine Stereo lauded Emery’s compositional skills, observing “the guitarist succeeds in something astonishing: shaping modernistic sound dimensions in an extraordinarily delightful way and making them accessible to a wider audience...”.

  • THE UNRECOGNISED JAZZ ARTIST by Ian Muldoon* ______
THE UNRECOGNISED JAZZ ARTIST by Ian Muldoon* ________________________________________________________ 974 was a strange time and I was in a strange place, stationed at the remote RAAF Base Learmonth airfield adjacent to Exmouth Gulf, in North 1 West, Western Australia. To the east was one of one of the great desert landmasses on the planet. To the west, the magnificent heritage listed 260 km Ningaloo Reef fringing a tiny part of the 70 million square km Indian Ocean. It was a reminder of the littleness of the individual human. I was ensconced as part of an RAAF contingent of over 200 men busily extending the airstrip at RAAF Base Learmonth to accommodate larger aircraft. At Exmouth Gulf 250 mm of rain falls per annum, usually in a 24-hour window accompanied, thank you very much, by a cyclone. It was at this weird location, in the state of Western Australia where racism flourished and the good burghers of the State were agitating for secession from the “Communist" eastern states because WA was enjoying a mining boom and could pay their own way; a location befuddled by wealth and sunshine and hedonism, which didn’t need anything that the Eastern States had to offer; where I fell in love with the voice of Sydney vocalist Julie Amiet. Sydney vocalist Julie Amiet: she did an improvised vocalisation based on some Charlie Parker tune… _________________________________________________________ *Ian Muldoon has been a jazz enthusiast since, as a child, he heard his aunt play Fats Waller and Duke Ellington on the household piano. At around ten years of age he was given a windup record player and a modest supply of steel needles, on which he played his record collection, consisting of two 78s, one featuring Dizzy Gillespie and the other Fats Waller.

Martin Schaberl WOLFGANG MUTHSPIEL – einer der vielseitigsten Musiker Österreichs und Preisträger des European Jazz Prize 2003 Schriftliche Arbeit zur Erlangung des akademischen Grades Magister artium an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Graz Thema: WOLFGANG MUTHSPIEL – einer der vielseitigsten Musiker Österreichs und Preisträger des European Jazz Prize 2003 Vorgelegt von Martin Schaberl Diese Arbeit wurde im Rahmen der Studienrichtung Jazz am Institut für Jazzforschung unter der Betreuung von Univ. Prof. Dr. Franz Krieger verfasst.

  • Franz Koglmann Mit C. Baier
