Mike Mantler and Carla Bley, being the only two non-leader members of the Guild, had decided to organize an orchestra made up of musicians both inside and outside the Guild. This group, then known as the Jazz Composer's Guild Orchestra and consisting of eleven musicians, began rehearsals in the downtown loft of painter Mike Snow for its premiere performance at the Guild's Judson Hall series of concerts in December 1964. The orchestra, set up in a large circle in the center of the hall, played "Communications no.3" by Mike Mantler and "Roast" by Carla Bley. The concert was so successful musically that the leaders decided to continue to write for the group and to give performances at the Guild's new headquarters, a triangular studio on top of the Village Vanguard, called the Contemporary Center. In early March 1965 at the first of these concerts, which were presented in a workshop style, the group had been enlarged to fifteen musicians and the pieces played were "Radio" by Carla Bley and "Communications no.4" (subtitled "Day") by Mike Mantler.

    ABSTRACT Title: FRENCH STEWARDSHIP OF JAZZ: THE CASE OF FRANCE MUSIQUE AND FRANCE CULTURE Roscoe Seldon Suddarth, Master of Arts, 2008 Directed By: Richard G. King, Associate Professor, Musicology, School of Music The French treat jazz as “high art,” as their state radio stations France Musique and France Culture demonstrate. Jazz came to France in World War I with the US army, and became fashionable in the 1920s—treated as exotic African- American folklore. However, when France developed its own jazz players, notably Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, jazz became accepted as a universal art. Two well-born Frenchmen, Hugues Panassié and Charles Delaunay, embraced jazz and propagated it through the Hot Club de France. After World War II, several highly educated commentators insured that jazz was taken seriously. French radio jazz gradually acquired the support of the French government. This thesis describes the major jazz programs of France Musique and France Culture, particularly the daily programs of Alain Gerber and Arnaud Merlin, and demonstrates how these programs display connoisseurship, erudition, thoroughness, critical insight, and dedication. France takes its “stewardship” of jazz seriously. He is also involved in arabic music with artists like oud-master Marcel Khalife or Simon Shaheen, Youssef el Idrissi a.o. Herbert is also a prolific and versatile composer, mostly commissioned by European orchestras and ensembles. He has written for orchestras, choirs and chamber groups, designed experimental movie soundtracks and incidental music for European avant-garde theatre groups (Cd:Aktionstheater Ensemble 2000 music for theater, AZM 102). As a Jazz musician, he has worked with many artists and groups such as the John Abercrombie/Marc Copland Quartet, Bobby Previte's "The Horse", Vienna Art Orchestra, John Clark Octet, Art Farmer and Woody Shaw. His work has been well documented on over 80 recordings (please see discography). Herbert was recently awarded the Hans Koller-prize as 'musician of the year' This prize is given to a jury chosen person, who had 'significant impact on the Austrian music scene for a long time'.

    Dino Rubino Quartet “time of silence” Dino Rubino, flicorno e pianoforte; Emanuele Cisi, sax; Paolino Dalla Porta, contrabbasso; Enzo Zirilli, batteria After the lucky experience of the long tour of the theatre show 'Tempo di Chet' with Paolo Fresu and Marco Bardoscia, Dino Rubino releases the fifth album for Tǔk Music, titled 'time of silence' and he is ready to bring the new experience live in concert. In the new project, which contains 10 new songs entirely composed by him, Dino brings back to work his quartet, that is one of the most interesting groups of the last years of Italian jazz; with him (both on piano and flugelhorn) there are Emanuele Cisi on tenor saxophone, Paolino Dalla Porta on double bass and Enzo Zirilli on drums. The four instruments dialogue with each other like a single voice and move following a univocal feeling of deep serenity and harmony. Evident is the natural evolution, from the previous work 'Where is the happiness?' several times at the center of numerous positive feedbacks from both critics and audience. In the music of the quartet, the Sicilian multi-instrumentalist synthesizes his musical listening made of classical, jazz, pop, folk and blues music through a deep emotionality. The love for melody remains the main instance that guides him through the many musical worlds and the pieces take on a kinematic character, soundtracks of images and moments that emerge from the experience. The time of silence is a common good, the moment of waiting, the hope of a promise, respect, the intention of listening, the intimacy of prayer, the moment of concentration, but it is also awareness and courage to discover oneself.

O que não deixa de ser curioso quando se ousa pensar, por vezes, ser missão de um baterista… bater forte e feio! Homem dos sete instrumentos, entre os quais a guitarra e a bateria (agora pianista e até cantor), Aldo Romano não disfarça, no carácter «melódico» do jazz que hoje nos propõe, a sua origem italiana. Mas desde que, em inícios da década de 1960, iniciou uma prolífera carreira em Paris – cidade que anos antes acolhera seus pais no difícil trânsito da emigração –, Romano foi-se tornando o mais francês dos músicos italianos.
