A práve doc. PhDr. V nasledujúcich piatich rokoch zúročoval svoj redaktorský talent a za- nechal výraznú stopu v Slovenskom pedagogickom nakladateľstve a v redakcii časopisu His- torická revue. Súčasne, v rokoch 1995 – 2000, pôsobil ako zástupca šéfredaktora a šéfredaktor časopisu Historická revue, a v rokoch 2001 – 2007 zastával pozíciu šéfredaktora a editora časopisu História – revue o dejinách spoločnosti. S nástupom do VHÚ sa zapojil do riešenia jedného z najdôležitejších projektov – syn- tetického spracovania a vydávania viaczväzkovej edície Vojenské dejiny Slovenska. Už rok po nástupe sa prezentoval ako spoluautor tretieho zväzku edície, ktorý približuje a mapuje vojenské udalosti Slovenska a Slovákov od roku 1711 až po rok 1914. Vo všeobecnosti Vladimír Segeš prezentuje prístup k vojenstvu a vojenským dejinám tiež svojím kladným vzťahom k armáde a predovšetkým k jej príslušníkom. Vzťah k ozbrojeným silám deklaruje otvorene, bez predsudkov a priamo, zdôrazňujúc pritom aj potrebu spra- covania vojenskej každodennosti, v rámci ktorej by nemali chýbať ani príbehy tzv. „obyčaj- 10 ných pešiakov“. Príležitostne pripomenie, s úsmevom v očiach, aj svoju dosiahnutú hodnosť „nadporučík v zálohe“. Nadobudnuté vedomosti a znalosti z oblasti vojenskej histórie, ako i dlhoročné odborné skúsenosti, získané vo svojej predchádzajúcej redaktorskej praxi, zúročuje aj ako dlhoročný predseda redakčnej rady ústavného vedeckého časopisu Vojenská história, odborného časo- pisu pre vojenskú históriu, vojenské múzejníctvo a archívnictvo. Svoje skúsenosti z oblasti vedeckej a výskumnej činnosti uplatňuje zasa vo funkcii podpredsedu Vedeckej rady VHÚ, v rámci ktorej nastoľuje riešenie hlavných dlhodobých vedeckých smerov a problémov ve- decko-výskumnej činnosti VHÚ. Publikačná tvorba Vladimíra Segeša je mimoriadne bohatá. Okrem monografií Od ry- tierstva po žoldnierstvo, Stredoveké vojenstvo v Uhorsku so zreteľom na Slovensko (2004), Prešporský pitaval, Zločin a trest v stredovekej Bratislave (2005), Remeslá a cechy v starom Prešporku (2010) je spoluautorom viacerých významných prác, ako napríklad Vojenské deji- ny Slovenska III. zv. 1711 – 1914 (1996), Lexikón slovenských dejín (1997, 1999, 2006), Kniha kráľov. • Content and Linguistic Comparison of Ideological Structures of Slavic Reciprocity in the Works of Slovak and Croatian Thinkers at the End of the 18Th Century
Graeco-Latina Brunensia 25 / 2020 / 2 https://doi.org/10.5817/GLB2020-2-9 Content and Linguistic Comparison of Ideological Structures of Slavic Reciprocity in the Works of Slovak and Croatian Thinkers at the End of the 18th Century Katarína Karabová (Trnava University) / ARTICLES ČLÁNKY Abstract The last two decades of the 18th century present an interesting opportunity to explore the origins of the idea of Slavic reciprocity as witnessed in the analysis of literary works written in Latin. The paper addresses the question of where and if there is an imaginary boundary of nationally tuned texts. The research should be primarily based on the works written at the end of the 18th century in the Slovak and Croatian milieu. Based on the analysis of content as well as linguistic analysis of the ideological intent in the literary texts of the contemporary authors (P. M. Katančić, J. Severini, J. Papánek and others), the author of the presented study aims to determine potential backgrounds. The research is based primarily on historically tuned works that at that time brought comprehensive insights into the history of individual nations and the related sensitive questions that are raised to a greater or lesser extent even today. The focus of the analysis on the content and language of ideological imaginations may be significant in the search for a milestone. It is clear that historical compendia had been written even before 1780, therefore the comparison of these works is more than beneficial, as it could bring new insights and give us the answer with regard to the development of the idea of Slavic reciprocity.

Although the territory of today´s Moravia (eastern part of the Czech Republic) and Slovakia came into contact with Christianity already at the end of antiquity, the more intensive Christianization of these lands took place only from the 8th century, when this territory was settled by Slavs. Mis- sionaries from the Frankish Empire, from the territory of Istria, Dalmatia and northern Italy came here. Domestic Slavic elites started to convert to Christian- ity as from the 9th century. For them, Christianity became a means of recogniz- ing their social status externally and allowed them to integrate with the more culturally advanced Christian world. Archaeological findings (e.g. crosses and captorgs, plaques and bells from Bojná, objects of secular character), written sources, sacral architecture and burying methods testify to the existence of Christianity in the territory of today´s Moravia and Slovakia, especially in cen- ters of the power. Key words: christianization, Christianity, missionaries, Slovakia, Moravia Povzetek: Pokristjanjevanje, povezano z utrjevanjem oblasti in vzpostavljanjem zgodnjih krščanskih državnih tvorb, je odločilno prispevalo k oblikovanju sre- dnjeveške Evrope.

Americas, and from further aield: basically, if it’s good music and it hasn’t yet been recorded, JOHN KINSELLA, IRISH SYMPHONIST by Séamas da Barra John Kinsella was born in Dublin on 8 April 1932. His early studies at the Dublin College of Music were devoted to the viola as well as to harmony and counterpoint, but he is essentially self-taught as a composer. He started writing music as a teenager and although he initially adopted a straightforward, even conventional, tonal idiom, he began to take a serious interest in the compositional techniques of the European avant-garde from the early 1960s. He embraced serialism in particular as a liberating influence on his creative imagination, and he produced a substantial body of work during this period that quickly established him in Ireland as one of the most interesting younger figures of the day. In 1968 Kinsella was appointed Senior Assistant in the music department of Raidió Teilefís Éireann (RTÉ), the Irish national broadcasting authority, a position that allowed him to become widely acquainted with the latest developments in contemporary music, particularly through the International Rostrum of Composers organised under the auspices of UNESCO. But much of what he heard at these events began to strike him as dispiritingly similar in content, and he was increasingly persuaded that for many of his contemporaries conformity with current trends had become more P important than a desire to create out of inner conviction. As he found himself growing disillusioned with the avant-garde, his attitude to his own work began to change and he came to question the artistic validity of much of what he had written.

  • Land Reform and the Hungarian Peasantry C. 1700-1848
Land Reform and the Hungarian Peasantry c. 1700-1848 Robert William Benjamin Gray UCL Thesis submitted for a PhD in History, 2009 1 I, Robert William Benjamin Gray, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 25th September 2009 2 Abstract This thesis examines the nature of lord-peasant relations in the final stages of Hungarian seigneurialism, dating roughly from 1700 to the emancipation of the peasantry in 1848. It investigates how the terms of the peasants’ relations with their lords, especially their obligations and the rights to the land they farmed, were established, both through written law and by customary practice. It also examines how the reforms of this period sought to redefine lord-peasant relations and rights to landed property. Under Maria Theresa land reform had been a means to protect the rural status quo and the livelihood of the peasantry: by the end of the 1840s it had become an integral part of a liberal reform movement aiming at the complete overhaul of Hungary’s ‘feudal’ social and economic system. In this period the status of the peasantry underpinned all attempts at reform. All reforms were claimed to be in the best interests of the peasantry, yet none stemmed from the peasants themselves. Conversely, the peasantry had means to voice their grievances through petitions and recourse to the courts, and took the opportunity provided by the reforms to reassert their rights and renegotiate the terms of their relations to their landlords.

The fact that he did not can undoubtedly be explained by the circumstances of Irish musical life at the period: in bleak contrast to Britain, not only were good choirs few and far between, but there was little evidence of interest in choral music throughout the country at large.

  • Between Emancipation and Antisemitism: Jewish Presence in Parliamentary Politics in Hungary 1867–1884
BETWEEN EMANCIPATION AND ANTISEMITISM: JEWISH PRESENCE IN PARLIAMENTARY POLITICS IN HUNGARY 1867–1884 Árpád Welker THE PERIOD UNDER STUDY The early 1880s were both difficult and extraordinary from the point of view of Hungarian Jewry. Political antisemitism had been present for half a decade, but it became violent and influential during these years, though only for these years. In other words, this was a time of crisis within the ‘Golden Era’ of the Hungarian Jewry, as some researchers of Hungarian Jews call the period of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy 1867–1918. [1] Besides antisemitism ‘normal’ political debate took place in parliament simultaneously, namely that related to the bill on Jewish–Christian marriages, which was also decisive from a Jewish point of view. The ‘antisemitic wave’ started with the attempts to establish a nation-wide movement, the Central Association of Non-Jewish Hungarians, following the example of Wilhelm Marr’s Antisemitenliga in Germany. [2] This period of virulent antisemitic activity culminated in the events related to the infamous Tiszaeszlár blood libel case, including a series of riots threatening the safety of Jews in numerous counties, and the foundation of the National Antisemitic Party in 1883. After the clear defeat of the antisemites in the elections of 1884, antisemitism practically became insignificant. [3] It took ten years until a political party incorporated antisemitism in its programme again, but the antisemitism of the Catholic People’s Party was ‘less virulent’, [4] and neither their only nor even their main goal. THE ‘DOUBLE PROGRAMME OF EMANCIPATION AND ASSIMILATION’ András Kovács in an article about the relationship between politics and Hungarian Jews argues that ‘independent Jewish politics has no tradition in the history of Hungarian Jewry’.

  • The History and Archaeology of Great Moravia
The history and archaeology of Great Moravia: an introductionemed_275 238..247 Florin Curta Historical geography is not in fashion any more. With an increased awareness of, and consequently caution about, the constructed character of maps and borders – both old and modern – historians of the early Middle Ages have become immune to the kind of debates that were still very popular in their discipline fifty years or so ago. The precise location of this or that battle or the boundaries of this or that polity are of course always subjects of some interest, but there seems to be a general, albeit tacit, agreement about the secondary importance of such topics to the general understanding of the broad historical process. This is not the case, however, for one of the most controversial issues of the ninth-century history of east central Europe, the location of a polity known as Great Moravia. In a region of the continent with a quite recent history of shifting political frontiers, the issue of where exactly did Rostislav rule when receiving the mission of Sts Constantine (Cyril) and Methodius may be understandably viewed as a matter of nationalist concern. However, as recent studies have shown, the political geography of east central Europe in the ninth century is also a matter of considerable concern for the understanding of Carolingian politics, in terms of both military campaigns and core–periphery relations. Few are the scholars whose work made that association more obvious than Imre Boba. Boba’s Moravia’s History Reconsidered, published in 1971, was well conceived and thoroughly researched.
