Throw together a night of performances by international dancers, sprinkle in some teenage competition winners’ solos, and call it something cute: That would seem to be the recipe for Youth America Grand Prix’s “Stars of Today Meet the Stars of Tomorrow” gala, happening this Thursday and Friday at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Except, the name of this annual program is eerily prescient. When you look back at the lists of YAGP medalists from the past 15 years, that “Stars of Tomorrow” moniker is spot-on. They read like something of a Who’s Who of ballet—including several top names who’ve been highlighted in Dance Magazine. Back in 2002, Sarah Lane nabbed the senior bronze medal with an unforgettable performance: After her music stopped 20 seconds into her Paquita variation, she finished the rest in silence. In the audience (which erupted into a spontaneous standing ovation) was American Ballet Theatre artistic director Kevin McKenzie. We ended up putting Lane onDance Magazine‘s cover in June 2007 just before he promoted her to soloist. Jim Nowakowski won the Youth Grand Prix in 2002 before joining Houston Ballet, then took a star turn on “So You Think You Can Dance.” We named him one of Dance Magazine‘s “25 to Watch” this year. That same year, Brooklyn Mack placed third in the classical dance category for senior men. Today, he’s a standout dancer at The Washington Ballet, and partnered Misty Copeland in her first U.S. performance of Swan Lake. Hee Seo took the Grand Prix in 2003.

Tamara Rojo Artistic Director of the English National Ballet Tamara began dancing in Madrid at the Víctor Ullate School, where she took part in an extensive repertoire of classical roles. She won a Gold Medal at the Paris International Dance Competition and the Special Jury Prize unanimously. Galina Samsova asked her to join the Scottish Ballet and she later received a personal invitation from Derek Deane to join the English National Ballet, where she became director after six months. She danced the whole range of leading roles with the company, including Juliet (Romeo and Juliet) and Clara (The Nutcracker), which Derek Deane created expressly for her. Tamara joined The Royal Ballet as Principal Dancer at the invitation of Sir Anthony Dowell. She is also a regular guest of the Mariinsky Ballet, La Scala Ballet, Tokyo Ballet, New National Theatre, Tokyo, the Cuban National Ballet, the National Ballet of China, the Lithuanian National Ballet, the Mikhailovsky Ballet, the Royal Swedish Ballet and the Finnish National Ballet. She has also performed at the prestigious World Ballet Festival in Tokyo and at galas all over the world. In 2010 she was recognised for her artistic excellence with the Laurence Olivier Award for the Best New Dance Production with Goldberg: the Brandstrup - Rojo Project. She has been awarded the Prince of Asturias Prize, the Gold Medal for Fine Arts and the Encomienda de Numero de Isabel la Catolica. Other recognitions include the Prix Benois de la Danse, The Times Dancer Revelation of the Year, the National Dance Critics Award, the Barclay’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance, the Positano Dance Award, Léonide Massine Premi al Valore, the Italian Critics Award, the International Arts Medal and the Madrid Performance Award.

El público cubano satisfizo aquí sus expectativas tras el debut del Royal Ballet con un programa marcado por la diversidad coreográfica y la muy esperada actuación de la española Tamara Rojo y el cubano Carlos Acosta. Estos últimos, abanderados de la famosa compañía británica, centraron la víspera en la sala García Lorca, del Gran Teatro de La Habana, un memorable espectáculo con el pas de deux de El corsario, pleno de virtuosismo, entre fouettes y pirouettes. Como primer botón de muestra, la contemporánea pieza Chroma, del célebre coreógrafo Wayne McGregor, puso al descubierto las exigencias fisicas que demanda a cada bailarín un juego que deshace la teoría del conocimiento sobre el cuerpo humano. La luz y el movimiento se conjugaron en un espacio mínimo para dar paso al cuerpo arquitectónico, en esa máxima del anatomista y fisiólogo checo Jan Evangelista cuando apuntó: los engaños de los sentidos son las verdades de la percepción. A los divertimentos les fue reservada también otra estela de aplausos y exclamaciones de bravo. Alina Cojocaru y José Martin demostraron talento histriónico en el pas de deux Las voces de la primavera, mientras que Roberta Márquez y Edward Watson encarnaron la escena del balcón de Romeo y Julieta, coreografiada por Kenneth MacMillan. El duetto de Mara Galeazzi y Thiago Soares protagonizó otro pas de deux, Farewell, en que los intensos arabescos de la primera y los saltos en giros de su contraparte devinieron no solo expresión amorosa sino diatriba contra el destino.
