Physical Activity Report Card 2014

"Is Canada in the Running?" Well, according to the 2014 Active Healthy Kids Canada Report Card for Children and Youth, Canada had a low grade in comparison to 14 other countries when it came to physical activity. Ten different grades were assigned and this is what the conclusion was:  "D" for Active Transportation -62% of Canadian parents drive their children to/from school.  "F" for Sedentary Behaviour -as children and youth get older, their hours of sedentary behaviour increase. -regardless of how active children are, if they obtain large amounts of sedentary behaviour their health risks increase.  "C" for Family Physical Activity -children and youth who have active parents are found to be more active in both sport and unstructured play in comparison to children and youth who have less active parents.  An overall grade of "D-" for Physical Activity Levels What these results indicate is useful knowledge for individuals, communities, and municipalities. It is apparent that as a country, our children and youth are spending much more time in front of screens - whether it is a television, computer, or cell phone - than ever before. As well, since we live in a very busy society, families feel they do not have the time to walk and/or wheel places rather than using automotive transportation. But, do not worry - there is a way to overcome these barriers! By using time management techniques and organizational practices, individuals and families can be well on their way to improving their own physical activity levels. Here are a few simple ways to help you and your family to increase their physical activity levels:  Make physical activity time a priority. Schedule walks, bike rides, park time, etc. with yourself and/or your family on a noticeable calendar in your house.  Designate "no screen" time in your home and go enjoy the outdoors every evening.  Plan to go to bed a little bit earlier so you can wake up earlier. This way, you have the time to walk and/or wheel to school and/or work.

Parkland Valley Sport, Culture, and Recreation District highly encourages everyone to get involved and be a part of the solution to help make our kids more physically active in our communities. What can you do? Also - do not forget - you can find us on Facebook and Twitter for updates in the world of sport, culture, and recreation! SUMMER 2014 Issue #13

FLASH Kids Update

FLASH Kids is a partnership group that focuses on literacy, nutrition, education, and physical activity for children age 0 to 5 years. In March, we completed a survey to see how those who took our LEAP training workshops benefited from the program. The results of the survey will help us in making alterations to the delivery and implementation.

FLASH Kids would like to thank Gabrielle Lepage-Lavoie for coming to meet with our committee and providing us with information about the 'Healthy Start' program. We look forward to working with Gabrielle in the months to come in collaboration with our LEAP training workshops and their Healthy Start workshops.

FLASH Kids is turning our efforts towards further development of our LEAP with ME initiative. This fall, we will be looking for a pilot site for this new program. Watch for information to be coming out! SUMMER 2014 Issue #13
