The Program's highest priority is protecting the 176 species of vertebrate and invertebrate animals and 259 species of native plants that are officially listed as Endangered, Threatened or of Special Concern in Massachusetts. Endangered species conservation in Massachusetts depends on you! A major source of funding for the protection of rare and endangered species comes from voluntary donations on state income tax forms. Contributions go to the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Fund, which provides a portion of the operating budget for the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program. Tyler, N. 5 Porch 6 7 8 SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIALS AND METHODS 9 10 Pollen analysis. We attempted to extract fossil pollen from 81 speleothems collected from 11 16 caves from the Western Australian portion of the Nullarbor Plain. Nullarbor speleothems 12 and caves are essentially “fossil” features that appear to have been preserved by very slow 13 rates of landscape change in a semi-arid landscape. Sample collection targeted fallen, well 14 preserved speleothems in multiple caves. U-Pb dates of these speleothems (Table S3) 15 ranged from late Miocene (8.19 Ma) to Middle Pleistocene (0.41 Ma), with an average age 16 of 4.11 Ma. 17 Fossil pollen typically is present in speleothems in very low concentrations, so pollen 18 processing techniques were developed to minimize contamination by modern pollen (1), but 19 also to maximize recovery, to accommodate the highly variable organic matter content of the 20 speleothems, and to remove a clay- to fine silt-sized mineral fraction present in many 21 samples, which was resistant to cold HF and which can become electrostatically attracted to 22 pollen grains, inhibiting their identification. Stalagmite and flowstone samples of 30-200 g 23 mass were first cut on a diamond rock saw in order to remove any obviously porous material. 24 All subsequent physical and chemical processes were carried out within a HEPA-filtered 25 exhausting clean air cabinet in an ISO Class 7 clean room. -

Family Liliaceae Plant description Calochortus indecorus (Sexton Mountain mariposa lily) is a bulbous perennial with a stout stem and a single basal leaf 2-2.5 dm long. The 2-2.5 cm bulb is ovoid, with a thick, dark coat. Flowers are bright lavender, with hairs in only a small area at the base of the petals above the gland. The two to four flowers are arranged in one or two loose umbels. Sepals are broadly lance-shaped, slightly shorter than the petals, and lack distinctive coloring. The 1.5-2 cm seed capsule is nodding at maturity. Distinguishing characteristics Calochortus uniflorus (meadow mariposa lily) is similar to C. indecorus, but this more common pink-flowered species produces bulblets at the base of the leaves, and has a shorter stem (2-5 cm high below the inflorescence) than the "rather stout" 8-12 cm stem (below the inflorescence) of the rare species. Several other mariposa lilies found in southwest Oregon are also similar in appearance to C. indecorus, but each has distinct differences. The flowers of Calochortus howellii (Howell’s mariposa lily) are white; those of C. tolmiei (cat’s ear mariposa lily) are also whitish, though often with a purple tinge, and have distinctly hairy petals. Calochortus nudus (naked mariposa lily), a mainly Californian species of wet meadows, is superficially similar to C. -

Species List F.1 Lists The following list and three tables denote the bird, mammal, fish, and plant species known to occur in Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (Arctic Refuge, Refuge). F.1.1 Birds of Arctic Refuge A total of 201 bird species have been recorded on Arctic Refuge. This list describes their status and abundance. Many birds migrate outside of the Refuge in the winter, so unless otherwise noted, the information is for spring, summer, or fall. Bird names and taxonomic classification follow American Ornithologists' Union (1998). F.1.1.1 Definitions of classifications used Regions of the Refuge . Coastal Plain – The area between the coast and the Brooks Range. This area is sometimes split into coastal areas (lagoons, barrier islands, and Beaufort Sea) and inland areas (uplands near the foothills of the Brooks Range). Brooks Range – The mountains, valleys, and foothills north and south of the Continental Divide. South Side – The foothills, taiga, and boreal forest south of the Brooks Range. Status . Permanent Resident – Present throughout the year and breeds in the area. Summer Resident – Only present from May to September. Migrant – Travels through on the way to wintering or breeding areas. Breeder – Documented as a breeding species. Visitor – Present as a non-breeding species. * – Not documented. Abundance . Abundant – Very numerous in suitable habitats. Common – Very likely to be seen or heard in suitable habitats. Fairly Common – Numerous but not always present in suitable habitats. Uncommon – Occurs regularly but not always observed because of lower abundance or secretive behaviors.
