Introduction The Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty establishes generic obligations to prior Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). A three-level EIA regime is established under Protocol Article 8, hinging on the level of impact – less than minor or transitory; minor or transitory; more than minor or transitory. Annex I Environmental Impact Assessment, establishes standards and processes for the corresponding EIA levels: – Preliminary Stage - sometimes termed by Parties: Preliminary Assessment (PA) or Preliminary Environmental Assessment (PEE); – Initial Environmental Assessment (IEE); and – Comprehensive Environmental Evaluation (CEE). Preliminary stage evaluations are left to appropriate national procedures2 and only limited guidance on scope and process is provided for IEEs, which are again left to national procedures3, excepting only that there is a duty to advise on procedures and that an IEE has been done, and any IEE shall be made available on request4. Only with CEEs are substantial obligations in relation to content and process specified; and critically, only with a draft CEE are there obligations to allow international scrutiny of EIA. The draft CEE must be circulated to Parties (who must make it publicly available) and to the Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP) within a timeframe established by the Protocol.5 A substantial case-history for IEE and CEE practice now exists. Through 2006, a total of 517 IEEs have been registered on the cumulative EIA list6 maintained by the Antarctic Treaty Secretariat. -

BAS Science Summaries 2018-2019 Antarctic field season BAS Science Summaries 2018-2019 Antarctic field season Introduction This booklet contains the project summaries of field, station and ship-based science that the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is supporting during the forthcoming 2018/19 Antarctic field season. I think it demonstrates once again the breadth and scale of the science that BAS undertakes and supports. For more detailed information about individual projects please contact the Principal Investigators. There is no doubt that 2018/19 is another challenging field season, and it’s one in which the key focus is on the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) and how this has changed in the past, and may change in the future. Three projects, all logistically big in their scale, are BEAMISH, Thwaites and WACSWAIN. They will advance our understanding of the fragility and complexity of the WAIS and how the ice sheets are responding to environmental change, and contributing to global sea-level rise. Please note that only the PIs and field personnel have been listed in this document. PIs appear in capitals and in brackets if they are not present on site, and Field Guides are indicated with an asterisk. Non-BAS personnel are shown in blue. A full list of non-BAS personnel and their affiliated organisations is shown in the Appendix. My thanks to the authors for their contributions, to MAGIC for the field sites map, and to Elaine Fitzcharles and Ali Massey for collating all the material together. STATUTORY INSTRUMENTS 2020 No. 1571 OVERSEAS TERRITORIES SANCTIONS The Russia (Sanctions) (Overseas Territories) Order 2020 Made - - - - 16th December 2020 Coming into force in accordance with article 1(1) At the Court at Windsor Castle, the 16th day of December 2020 Present, The Queen’s Most Excellent Majesty in Council Her Majesty, in exercise of the powers conferred on Her by section 63(3)(c) and (4) of the Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Act 2018( a), is pleased, by and with the advice of Her Privy Council, to make the following Order: Citation, commencement and extent 1. —(1) This Order may be cited as the Russia (Sanctions) (Overseas Territories) Order 2020 and comes into force immediately after both the Sanctions (EU Exit) (Miscellaneous Amendments) (No. 2) Regulations 2020( b) and the Sanctions (EU Exit) (Miscellaneous Amendments) (No. 4) Regulations 2020( c) have come into force in the United Kingdom. (2) This Order extends to each British overseas territory listed in Schedule 1. Extension of the Russia (Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019 2. The Russia (Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019(d) as amended from time to time extend to each British overseas territory listed in Schedule 1 with the modifications specified in Schedule 2. Extension of the Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Act 2018 3. Subject to the modification set out in paragraph (c), the following provisions of the Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Act 2018 extend to each British overseas territory listed in Schedule 1 for the purposes of the Russia (Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019 as modified and extended to the territories by this Order— (a) 2018 c.13. -

This is a descriptive research which is analyzed by theory Geopolitic, using descriptive research type. The data presented in this research is a secondary data. The results of this study indicate that there are at least two British interests in making their claims on the territory of the Antarctic Peninsula. These are interest is control of the territory as evidenced by the naming of some of the territories included in the claim and the determination of the territory claimed as a British overseas, as well as some efforts which one of them promotes that the region is British sovereignty in Antarctica. The second interest is the mastery of the existence of resources as evidenced by the presence of fisheries potential, tourism potential, and the prediction of natural resources in the region. Pendahuluan Di abad ke-21, penggunaan sumber daya alam yang tidak dapat diperbaharui seperti minyak bumi semakin meningkat jumlahnya, dilihat dari bertambahnya jumlah kendaraan bermotor yang menggunakan bahan bakar minyak di dunia semakin bertambah dengan pesat setiap tahunnya. Hal tersebut menjadikan beberapa negara meneliti wilayah yang memiliki potensi sumber daya alam. Wilayah yang memiliki potensi sumber daya alam yaitu salah satunya berada di Kutub Selatan atau pada Benua Antartika. -

United States Antarctic Activities 2003-2004 This site fulfills the annual obligation of the United States of America as an Antarctic Treaty signatory to report its activities taking place in Antarctica. This portion details planned activities for July 2003 through June 2004. Modifications to these plans will be published elsewhere on this site upon conclusion of the 2003-2004 season. National Science Foundation Arlington, Virginia 22230 November 30, 2003 Information Exchange Under United States Antarctic Activities Articles III and VII(5) of the ANTARCTIC TREATY Introduction Organization and content of this site respond to articles III(1) and VII(5) of the Antarctic Treaty. Format is as prescribed in the Annex to Antarctic Treaty Recommendation VIII-6, as amended by Recommendation XIII-3. The National Science Foundation, an agency of the U.S. Government, manages and funds the United States Antarctic Program. This program comprises almost the totality of publicly supported U.S. antarctic activities—performed mainly by scientists (often in collaboration with scientists from other Antarctic Treaty nations) based at U.S. universities and other Federal agencies; operations performed by firms under contract to the Foundation; and military logistics by units of the Department of Defense. Activities such as tourism sponsored by private U.S. groups or individuals are included. In the past, some private U.S. groups have arranged their activities with groups in another Treaty nation; to the extent that these activities are known to NSF, they are included. Visits to U.S. Antarctic stations by non-governmental groups are described in Section XVI. This document is intended primarily for use as a Web-based file, but can be printed using the PDF option. -
