Emanuel Jphann Schikaneder, the author of the libretto of "The Magic Flute," was a wandering theatre director, poet, composer, and play-actor. Restless, a bore, vain, improvident, and yet shrewd, he was not without good qualities that had won him the friendship of Mozart. In 1791 Schikaneder found himself sorely embarrassed. He was at that time the director of the Auf der Wieden, a little theatre, no better than a booth, where comic operas were played and sung; and he no doubt would have made a success of his venture, had he curbed his ambition. Upon the verge of failure, he had one thing to console him, — a fairy drama which he had made out of " Lulu, or the Enchanted Flute," a story by Wieland. He asked Mozart to write the music for it ; and Mozart, pleased with the scenario, ac- cepted, and said, "If I do not bring you out of your trouble, and if the work is not successful, you must not blame me; for I have never written magic music." Schikaneder had followed closely Wieland's text; but he learned that Marinelli,.a rival manager, the director of I the Leopoldstadt Theatre, thought of putting upon the stage a piece > with the same subject. (274) an actor named Gieseke, modified the plot, and substituted for the evil genius of the play the high priest Sarastro, who appears to be the custodian of the secrets and the executor of the wishes of the Masonic order. The story of the opera in its present form is known to all, and it would not call for comment at this late day if certain modern writers had not found a deep and symbolical meaning in the most trivial dialogue and even in the music of the overture. Some have gone so far as to regard the opera as a symbolical representa- tion of the French Revolution. The Queen of Night is to them the incarnation of Royalty. Pamina is Liberty, the daughter of Despot- ism, for whom Tamino, the People, burns with passionate love. Monostatos is Emigration, and Sarastro is the Wisdom of the Legis- lature, while the priests represent the National Assembly. Now, Mozart himself saw nothing in the text but the libretto of a magic opera. Goethe and Hegel were equally blind. The former once wrote of the text that "the author understood perfectly the art of producing great theatrical effects by contrasts," and Hegel praised the libretto highly for its mixture of the supernatural and the com- mon, for its episodes of the initiations and the tests. President’s Report Dear Members Neidhardt Ring This is our final Newsletter for 2004, and in less than 4 weeks the first cycle of the Neidhardt Ring in Adelaide will begin. This is an historic and monumental undertaking for the State Opera of South Australia, and we in the Eastern States, who cannot hope to dine on such exalted operatic fare in our own cities, will once again pilgrimage to Adelaide and its Festival Hall. In his review of Ring productions at our July meeting, Dr Antony Ernst mentioned that many opera companies are destroyed by the demands of staging the Ring, as moths to a flame, and we must all hope that this is emphatically not the case for the State Opera of South Australia. Some stagings of the Ring disappear forever after their first performances, and again we must all hope that this can be revived in Adelaide, or perhaps staged in other cities here and overseas. This Ring is being characterised by some commentators as the first truly Australian Ring, but I prefer to follow the Bayreuth tradition by naming this Ring after its producer, Elke Neidhardt. “Nach Adelaide!” Society Events PLEASE NOTE: In response to many requests over the last few years, the Management Committee has decided that all functions for 2005 will begin at 2:00PM. On Sunday 19 September, Dr Jim Leigh spoke about different recordings of the Ring and introduced the film made in November 1964 of the recording of the Solti Gotterdammerung in the Sofiensaal, Vienna.

    ONOMÀSTICA BIBLIOTECA TÈCNICA DE POLÍTICA LINGÜÍSTICA European Train Names: a Historic Outline* Christian Weyers DOI: 10.2436/15.8040.01.201 Abstract This paper gives a first overview of the onomastic category of train names, searches to classify the corpus and reviews different stages of their productivity. Apart from geographical names (toponyms, choronyms, compass directions) generally indicating points of origin and destination of the trains in question, a considerable number of personal names have entered this category, of classical literary authors, musicians and scientists, but also of many fictional or non-fictional characters taken from literature or legendary traditions. In some cases also certain symbolic attributes of these persons and finally even heraldic figures have given their names to trains. In terms of their functionality, train names originally were an indicator of exclusiveness and high grade of travel quality, but they developed gradually, as they dispersed over the European continent, into a rather unspecific, generalized appellation, also for regional and local trains. After two periods of prosperity after 1950, the privatisation of railway companies starting in the 1990s had again a very positive effect on the category, as the number of named trains initially reached a new record in this decade. ***** The first train names appeared in England in the 1860s in addition to names for steam locomotives, and on two different levels. The Special Scotch Express between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh (inaugurated in 1862) was called by the public The Flying Scotsman from the 1870s, but it succeeded as the official name not before 1924. Also the names of the German diesel trainsets Der Fliegende Hamburger and Der Fliegende Kölner were colloquial name creations, as were the Train Bleu and the Settebello operated from 1922 and 1953 but officially named in 1947 and 1958, respectively.
