There was a widespread conversation on this topic in the United States during the stimulus debate of the early Obama administration. Subsequently, there have been various proposals for further federal spending on infrastructure, which could take the form of state-level programs, the much- discussed and much-mocked Infrastructure Week initiatives during the Trump administration, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s call for a Green New Deal, and calls for massive federal spending on infrastructure in the 2020 election campaign including a $1.5-2 trillion figure put out by the Biden campaign. This is not purely an American debate, either. The Trudeau cabinet spent considerable money subsidizing infrastructure construction in Canada, including for example helping fund a subway under Broadway in Vancouver, which is the busiest bus corridor in North America today. Within Europe, there is considerable spending on infrastructure as part of the coronavirus recovery program even in countries that practiced fiscal austerity before the crisis, such as Germany. China likewise accelerated the pace of high-speed rail investment 2 during the global financial crisis of 2009 and its aftermath, and is currently looking for major investment of comparable scale due to the economic impact of corona. With such large amounts of money at stake—the $2 trillion figure is about 10% of the United States’ annual economic output—it is critical to ensure the money is spent productively. -

Under Section 6 of the Flood Control Act of 1944 (Public Law 78-534), the Secretary of the Army is authorized to make agreements with states, municipalities, private concerns, or individuals for surplus water that may be available at any reservoir under the control of the Department. Terms of the agreements are normally for five (5) years, with an option for a five (5) year extension, subject to recalculation of reimbursement after the initial five (5) year period. This proposed action will allow the Omaha District to enter into surplus water agreements with interested water purveyors and to issue easements for up to the total amount of surplus water to meet regional water needs. -

Roger Louis Based on archival work in England, Scotland, the United States, Canada and Australia, my dissertation expands the traditional purview of diplomatic history into the international dimensions of the social and cultural realms. My study treats doomed attempts to reconstruct previously-held notions of hierarchy and deference as encapsulated in the Empire Settlement Act (ESA) in the wake of the dramatic changes to the world order resulting from World War I. To counter the emergence of Japan as a world power, under the auspices of the ESA, British Columbia and Western Australia, the two most distant outposts of the “white” British Empire in the Pacific, imported poor Celtic farmers and militiamen from northern Scotland in an attempt to retain their iv “British” identity, which they felt was threatened by Japan on the one hand, the Japanese in their midst on another, and local “nationalisms” on a third. -

I am a Senior at St. John’s Prep, and I will serve as your chair for the Massachusetts House of Representatives on Railway Service. I have been involved in Model UN at the Prep for 5 years. Outside of Model UN, I am on the SJP Tennis Team, an Eagles’ Wings Leader, a member of Spire Society, a member of the National Honor Society, and a member of the Chinese National Honor Society. The topic of Railway Service has really fascinated me, since my father is an executive in the FTA (Federal Transit Administration), which is part of the DOT (Department of Transportation), and he has been my inspiration for my research into this topic. Also, I am a frequent passenger on the “T” and Commuter Rail (as well as commuter rail and subway services in many different cities such as Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and Montreal). Thus, I recommend that you read through this paper as well as to do your own research on the frequency, extension, and public trust in the Greater Boston Railway Service. AUSTRALIAN JOINT COPYING PROJECT SIR THOMAS COCHRANE Papers, 1840-49 Reels M948-70 National Library of Scotland George IV Bridge Edinburgh EH1 1EW National Library of Australia State Library of New South Wales Filmed: 1976 BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Sir Thomas John Cochrane (1789-1872), who was born in Edinburgh, was the son of Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane (1758-1832) and his wife Maria. He entered the Royal Navy in 1796 as a volunteer on HMS Thetis, commanded by his father. He was made a lieutenant in 1805 and became a captain within a year. He served in the West Indies in 1807-9, taking part in the capture of the Virgin Islands and Martinique, and in North America in 1811-14. From 1820 to 1824 he commanded HMS Forte on the North America Station. In 1825 Cochrane was appointed the first governor of Newfoundland. After representative government was introduced in 1832, his relations with the colonists worsened and he was eventually recalled by the Colonial Office in 1834. He was a member of the House of Commons from 1839 to 1841. Cochrane was made a rear-admiral in 1841 and in 1842 he was appointed second in command of the East Indies Station. Based in Hong Kong, which had become a British colony following the 1839-40 Opium War, the East Indies Station extended from the Red Sea in the west to the Philippines and New Zealand in the east. When Admiral Sir William Parker returned to England in 1844, Cochrane succeeded him as commander-in-chief. At the same time, the Station was divided into two divisions, with the western (Indian Ocean) division headed by Commodore Sir Henry Blackwood and the China division headed by Cochrane.
