It is the 250th anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Wolfgang Mozart was born in 1756 in Salzburg, Austria. His musical talents revealed themselves at a tender age. Well before his teens father Leopold took him and his likewise gifted older sister Nannerl on several tours through Europe. Soon he became a widely known and admired child prodigy of an unsurpassed class of his own. Already at eight years old his first music was being published. It was the beginning of an astonishing career. The sheer amount of music he wrote is, with hindsight, incredible and of high quality. Amadeus must have written very fast to manage composing the over 600 works he left to posterity. His manuscripts hardly contain any deletions. Mozart’s versatility is impressive too. He wrote anything from simple canons for keyboard to large-scale symphonies and operas on a great variety of librettos.

  • EASTER with NAXOS MUSIC of the PASSION of CHRIST Easter with Naxos
EASTER WITH NAXOS MUSIC OF THE PASSION OF CHRIST Easter with Naxos The events of Christ’s Passion have been marked in artistic triumphs over the centuries, not least in music which has a treasure trove of works devoted to the sequence of the action. Just as the Easter story moves from darkness to light, so the works describing it represent the full spectrum of genres and resources. In this catalogue – which also includes titles from Naxos’ affiliated labels – you’ll find masterpieces representative of all musical styles: from Bach’s Passion settings to the Requiems of Mozart, Dvořák and Verdi, plus the more contemporary utterances of works. You’ll also see recordings of instrumental music, such as Messiaen’s L’Ascension, Gubaidulina’s Sieben Worte, and Haydn’s Seven Last Words in its piano version. This was the goal of the entire life of Saint Paul, to whom we looked throughout the Pauline Year now ending; this was the goal of the entire ministry of the Curé of Ars, whom we shall invoke in particular during this Year for Priests; may it also be the primary goal for each and every one of us. Certainly, to be ministers at the service of the Gospel, study and careful, ongoing pastoral and theological formation are useful and necessary, but even more necessary is that “knowledge of love” which can only be learned in a “heart to heart” encounter with Christ. For it is he who calls us to break the bread of his love, to forgive sins and to guide the flock in his name.
