He recorded two versions of Bach’s great composition—once in 1955 and again in 1981. It is a testament to Gould’s genius that he could record the same piece of music twice—so differently, yet each version brilliant in its own way. Glenn Gould— A State Of Wonder brings together both of Gould’s legendary performances of The Goldberg Variations for the first time in a deluxe, digitally remastered, 3-CD set. Sony Classical celebrates the 70th anniversary of Glenn Gould's birth with a collection of limited edition CDs. This beautifully packaged collection contains the cornerstones of Gould’s career that marked him as a genius of our time. A supreme intrepreter of Bach, these recordings are an essential addition to every music collection.

BARCELONA – Rigoletto, Gran Teatre del Liceu, 12/13/04 > Opera News > The Met Opera Guild 28/04/16 14:30 In Review (http://www.operanews.org/operanews/templates/review.aspx?date=3/1/2005) > International March 2005 — Vol. 69, No. 9 (http://www.operanews.org/Opera_News_Magazine/2005/3/Plácido_Domingo.html) Rigoletto BARCELONA Gran Teatre del Liceu 12/13/04 Carlos Álvarez and Inva Mula Carlos Álvarez and Marcelo Álvarez are sought-after specialists in the roles of Rigoletto and the Duke of Mantua but had not sung them together until Graham Vick's production of Rigoletto in Barcelona (seen December 13). So these performances marked "an Álvarez family get-together," said Argentine tenor Marcelo Álvarez at the press conference before the premiere. At his side, Andalusian baritone Carlos Álvarez smiled. Of http://www.operanews.com/Opera_News_Magazine/2005/3/Review/BARCELONA_–%C2%A0Rigoletto,_Gran_Teatre_del_Liceu,_12/13/04.html Page 1 of 3 BARCELONA – Rigoletto, Gran Teatre del Liceu, 12/13/04 > Opera News > The Met Opera Guild 28/04/16 14:30 course they are not relatives; Álvarez is as common a last name in Spanish- speaking countries as Smith is in Anglo-Saxon ones. But there was nonetheless a "familiar" atmosphere in the performances, perhaps due to the fact that both singers have matured into roles they now master backwards and forward, and that here they were accompanied by an excellent cast of Verdians. In the end, it was an overall success in one of the trickiest of operas, to which most patrons come with their ears full of their favorite voice.

Blake Library’s catalog, and click on citations to see full articles.) BELLINI’S NORMA featuring CECILIA BARTOLI This tragic opera is set in Roman-occupied, first-century Gaul, features a title character, who although a Druid priestess, is in many ways a modern woman. Norma has secretly taken the Roman proconsul Pollione as her lover and had two children with him. Political and personal crises arise when the locals turn against the occupiers and Pollione turns to a new paramour. Norma “is a role with emotions ranging from haughty and demanding, to desperately passionate, to vengeful and defiant. And the singer must convey all of this while confronting some of the most vocally challenging music ever composed. And if that weren't intimidating enough for any singer, Norma and its composer have become almost synonymous with the specific and notoriously torturous style of opera known as bel canto — literally, ‘beautiful singing’” (“Love Among the Druids: Bellini's Norma,” NPR World of Opera, May 16, 2008). And Bartoli, one of the greatest living opera divas, is up to the challenges the role brings. (New York Public Radio’s WQXR’s “OperaVore” declared that “Bartoli is Fierce and Mercurial in Bellini's Norma,” Marion Lignana Rosenberg, June 09, 2013.) If you’re already a fan of this opera, you’ve no doubt heard a recording spotlighting the great soprano Maria Callas (and we have such a recording, too), but as the notes with the Bartoli recording point out, “The role of Norma was written for Giuditta Pasta, who sang what today’s listeners would consider to be mezzo-soprano roles,” making Bartoli more appropriate than Callas as Norma.

  • The Verdi Requiem - a Partial Survey of the Discography by Ralph Moore
The Verdi Requiem - A Partial Survey of the Discography by Ralph Moore The circumspect title of my survey arises from the fact that although over eighty recordings are listed in the Wikipedia discography (see also MWI Masterwork Index) it is not complete and there are probably many more circulating in the form of private recordings on what used to be called “pirate” labels. For instance, in my own comparatively modest collection of thirty-five recordings are a live Karajan performance from 1970 on the “Gala” label, the Naxos release conducted by Morandi and the LSO Live recording conducted by Colin Davis, none of which is included in that Wiki list. The Karajan recording is superb but, unfortunately, in muddy mono sound and while the Naxos double CD makes a good super-bargain “starter suggestion”, it is not as good as many of the recordings discussed below. Furthermore, I have discarded some dozen or so which I came to regard as “shelf-cloggers”, insofar as I had no desire to play them again, so I am able to venture an opinion and express some preferences but am by no means in any position to make definitive statements about “best” recordings, even if I desired to do so. Besides, individual taste in performers and personal convictions regarding how this work should be approached and sound will govern others’ choices; all I propose to do is provide some assessment of those recordings with which I am familiar. I have often encountered fellow music-lovers who have no taste for Verdi’s operas but still enjoy the Requiem, which is amusing as the work surely merits what some construe as the derogatory label of “Verdi’s greatest opera”.
