The Beach Boys' idea of wedding the rhythm of rock'n'roll and the melodies of pop music was taken to its logical conclusion in Britain by the bands of the so- called "Mersey Sound". The most famous of them, the Beatles, became the object of the second great swindle of rock'n'roll. In 1963 "Beatlemania" hit Britain, and in 1964 it spread through the USA. They became even more famous than Presley, and sold records in quantities that had never been dreamed of before them. Presley had proven that there was a market for rock'n'roll in the USA. Countless imitators proved that a similar market also existed in Europe, but they had to twist and reshape the sound and the lyrics. Britain had a tradition of importing forgotten bluesmen from the USA, and became the center of the European recording industry. European rock'n'roll was less interested in innuendos, more interested in dancing, and obliged to merge with the strong pop tradition.

1 2 PLAYLIST SEPT. 22nd 2013 9AM The Beatles - Come Together - Abbey Road (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John 3 The Beatles’ twenty-first single release for EMI, and fourth on the Apple Records label. When John and Yoko were in Montreal staging their second and last Bed-In For Peace they were visited by Timothy Leary, an outspoken proponent of LSD. During their visit, Leary and his wife participated in John and Yoko’s hotel room recording of “Give Peace A Chance,” singing on the chorus. Timothy is even name-checked in the lyrics. He asked John to write a song titled “Come Together – Join The Party” for his bid to become governor of California. Lennon obliged and responded with lyrics such as: “Come together right now/Don’t come tomorrow, don’t come alone/Come together right now over me.” Lennon recorded a demo for Leary, who started using it as his campaign song. After being imprisoned for possession of marijuana in late 1969, Leary dropped out of the gubernatorial race, which was won by Ronald Reagan. Lennon reworked and expanded the song for the Beatles. The Beatles - The Ballad Of John And Yoko - Non-LP track (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John The Beatles’ twentieth single release for EMI, and third on the Apple Records label. The first Beatles single issued in stereo in the UK, it is also the very first stereo single issued by EMI. The “Get Back” single had been released in stereo in America by Capitol. Recorded on April 14, 1969, by just John and Paul, the song was completed that day.

He gained some critical attention for playing guitar with Captain Beefheart on Safe As Milk. In the late Pure Pleasure / 60’s and 70’s he became a vital session musician for prominent artists. This included Randy Speakers Corner Newman (12 Songs), The Rolling Stones (Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers) and Little Feat (“Willin’). The list is voluminous and includes John Lee Hooker, Maria Muldaur, Neil Young, Arlo Guthrie, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Warren Zevon and The Doobie Brothers among many others. He was part of the historic Jamming With Edward, joining Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts and Nicky Hopkins. Beginning with the 1970 film, Performance, Cooder worked on 18 film scores and notably collaborated on Buena Vista Social Club. His solo career has spanned five decades and consists of a wide variety of roots- based music in various formats. • CHARLIE WATTS 1941 to 2021 the Rhythmic Force Behind the Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World
CHARLIE WATTS 1941 to 2021 The rhythmic force behind the greatest rock and roll band in the world. The Rolling Stones were a force of nature when they were in the studio during their artistic peak in the 60s and 70s. Their albums through the 60s produced masterpieces with Out Of Our Heads (1965 being their first self-penned), Aftermath (1966 which indicated song writing prowess) and culminating in Beggars Banquet and Let It Bleed (1968 and 1969 respectively – pure magnificence). Sure, we had several huge selling singles in between. A run of releases from 1965 to 1969 produced Satisfaction, Get Off Of My Cloud, 19th Nervous Breakdown, Paint It, Black, Mother’s Little Helper, Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadow?, Let’s Spend The Night Together, We Love You, In Another Land, She’s A Rainbow, Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Street Fighting Man and Honky Tonk Women. Their incredible 70s album run continued with Sticky Fingers, Exile On Main St., Goats Head Soup, It’s Only Rock n’ Roll, Black and Blue and Some Girls. The glue that provided their success was the rhythm unit of Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman. They dictated the back beat and gave the roll to the band’s rock. According to Charlie, the Rolling Stones meant nothing to him – that was Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. They were the artistic front while the sparkles were the founders of the band Brian Jones and Ian Stewart not to mention Nicky Hopkins, Mick Taylor and Ron Wood. There are of course significant other contributors – Andrew Oldham, Jack Nitzsche, Glyn Johns, Dave Hassinger, Jimmy Miller, Bobby Keys, Billy Preston and Andy Johns – and yes, I am sure I have missed important others.
